  1. Boop Beep: the bot says it's #selfPromo time!

HEY! I do STUFF! So much stuff I can’t fit it all in a single post!

  2. Unpopular opinion: most modern sweet "flavors" are inventions of rich and bored hipsters. Back in the 80-90s in Italy, we didn't have stuff like "salted butter caramel" or "sea salt and Turkish chili chocolate", they just... didn't exist. The most exotic stuff was chocolate-coated peanuts. So, when I hear about your "oregano-infused matcha latte" or "avocado-watermelon-spinach smoothie", this sounds to me like "caramelized bacon octopus" or "salty coconut agave". And the thing that terrifies me the most is that right now you are thinking "hey, all this sounds delicious!"

  3. our final play session was really something, we ended up solving a fairly sophisticated puzzle while split into three groups, with pretty good radio discipline and remote signaling and all the rest.

still some PTT issues and a few "over"s that didn't end the message, but a far cry from our early play sessions where we had comms conflicts and did a lot of disorganized wandering around!

a lot of funny moments where stuff that seems obvious to me (because of exposure in scouting) was not something my friends were thinking about until the problem dawned on them or somesuch. and real orienteering and collaboration skills were developed in the process!

  4. Hilarious that Dan Tehan, shadow energy minister and the first semi-autonomous robot with a broad Aussie accent, is demanding the resignation of energy minister Chris Bowen. Why? Because of the massive cost blowout of Snowy Hydro 2, a scheme which Dan's government started and then controlled for five years until they lost government. It's gone from an estimate of $2bn to around 25bn. Labor's 2023 review found most of the design had not even been done ("Design immaturity"), not to mention too few geological core samples had been taken along the tunnel paths, resulting in the tunnel borer Florence the Machine being stuck in a sinkhole for 11 months. It's equally hilarious that Angus Taylor, energy minister in 2017 and responsible for the stuffups, is also calling for Chris Bowen's resignation. #auspol #snowyhydro

  5. I was going to quote another toot as an example; but it decided against doing that…

For the folks that are on instances that have large (>1000) character limits: Please know that you don’t have to max out your limit. If you must, post a large toot, please break it up into multiple toots, if those multiple toots go into double digits, please consider getting a blog, and post you stuff their and in a single toot post a link with a summary.

  6. It's not like any of the individual measures I've been applying (network segmentation, rootless containers, readonly filesystems, compartmentalizing secrets/keys...) acts as a silver bullet, but seeing the clusterfuck that we are living these days on the Internet... I'm happy of having been a bit paranoid with the security of my systems (to the extend of my abilities).

I still have to update a lot of stuff all the time, but at least I have some extra margin to react (in comparison to the common case).

  7. Damn, that third movement of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 4! I just love how he finishes it with this unconventional, somber fade-away in four, with just the timpani, glockenspiel, and a figure from part of the reed section, after what you *thought* would be the full-orchestra climax. Did he hear this stuff in his dreams?

He got in trouble with Stalin for this one. Written in 1934-36, it wasn't performed until the '50s.

  9. Android/Kotlin official resources are in this weird state that there are a LOT of them, they look good and they contain some pretty specific examples, but they all kind of suck? Like they lack any real structure, repeat the same stuff in various articles, but leave out a lot of necessary information

  10. And now I can't find the spreadsheet in which I catalogued them. So I'm doing that again, and this time I'm entering them in along with all my books. I need to find an online index of what stories are in which issue, as for now the data are limited to stuff like "F&SF, Nov 1972". Anyone got any pointers? 2/2

  11. Late lunch, brats on the grill, football on TV, oak in the glass….

    Oak-aged Imperial Sweet Stout 2023

Massive oakiness with a smooth mouthfeel. Notes of smoke and molasses. Sweet with a lasting oaky boozy tingle.

p.s. that’s white oak from my backyard, not the stuff for good beer…

  12. After my heroic feats of as previously documented on this channel I have moved on to . Some time ago I was in a second hand bookshop which had two boxes of uncatalogued sci-fi magazines. They were trying to sell them for 20p a volume. I offered considerably less to take the lot. When I got home I catalogued and shelved them all. At some point I moved them to boxes because I wanted the shelf space for other stuff. 1/n

  13. Here's a conceptual programming question for you:

If I have a static site generator, can I make it federated..? :anime_huh:

I mean, I think you can set up an RSS feed so that the feed is updated when the site is updated.

Could that be federated? Tied to a federated platform to handle the dynamic aspects, maybe..?

I ask, because when people were asking about better "web comic" platforms, some of the stuff they asked for were my reason for making "LunaGen" for my landing site for serial episode content.

Could it be federated? Does that even make sense? Would I lose the benefits of a static website? 🤔 :raccoon_cool:

  14. 87-year-old customer says she's not eaten all day because she's so stressed trying to .

In a 90-minute phone call – and with English not her first language – she followed diligently step-by-step as I guided her to restart the iPad, try the iPhone instead, restart the , restart the router, rejoin the printer to Wi-Fi, factory reset the printer, check for printer firmware updates, and factory reset the router. All to no avail.

Now I'm off to find her a new printer, and she's promised she'll have dinner.

Dear tech bros: we don't want AI, we don't want smart everything, we don't want a new version every year. We want stuff that works.

  15. Further on the f... up yesterday.
Assessing Microsoft's current app strategy "pest or cholera" may be a tad brutal, but I maintain that it IS accurate!
Microsoft have caught us right in the middle of two distinct design failures:

    1. Electron overhead. The so-called desktop apps may work and show documents "correctly", but they have sooo much overhead they swallow gigs of RAM, leak memory, and return "Not Responding" for long periods of time.
    2. Cloud-first (read lock-in). "Traditional" real apps held local state and sync'ed in the background. Now it seems that all the telemetry, licensing, and co-authoring stuff is just blocking everything. On top of that, the web-apps are not rendering documents to look like the way the do in the desktop apps - So while they're less "Not Responding", they look like shite.

Anyways... Let's support each others - and the companies around us - in getting off that shit. Will it be perfect? Certainly not, but at least it'll be a fresh start :)

  16. #Google changed its privacy policy on 16 October

old line: no personalised ads from your Drive, Gmail or Photos. new wording is fuzzier.

if Personal Intelligence is connected to AI search, your data can shape the ads you see. it may be on without you noticing.

check: Data & privacy > Personalization settings > Connected Content Apps.

encrypt your private stuff before it goes into a cloud. encrypted = unreadable to Google 🔐

  17. Good morning everyone 🌻 Windy old night and the storm is still blowing, but the power has stayed on so far 🤞 An extra hour in bed this morning due to the clocks going back was helpful as I was awake off an on all night and wanted to be able to get up early to help Grant with the parrots in case there was no power. Luckily that wasn't required so I managed to slip back to sleep for a while.

I'm sitting with them now and they are clearly unsettled, but all cosy at least. Toby is covered over the front of his cage since he has been screaming at me constantly since I came in and I find that just blocking him off from seeing me while leaving the rest open calms him right down 🤷🏻‍♀️ I can hear him happily munching away. I'll uncover him again when I leave the room, but I would like some coffee in my own warm living room first 😂

We didn't end up playing BG3 yesterday as Grant said he just wanted to watch stuff instead. I played some Fields of Mistria on my Steam Deck for a few hours instead. I'm really enjoying it. It's like Stardew Valley meets Zelda or something 😊

Plans for today are more crochet work and watching things if the power stays on.

Have a very lovely day, whatever you get up to 🤗

  18. Watching a YouTube video of funny Google Street View scenes with (10), and I mentioned the LARPers in Pittsburgh
    Lincoln: what's LARPing?
Me: Live Action Role Playing. It's people playing D&D in the real world, but with costumes and weapons and stuff
    Lincoln: is that like furries?
Me: well, furries do gather in Pittsburgh...

  20. Where does installs the efi file when in the 14.2 installer? 'Cos my T480's EFI FAT32-formatted partition at the start of the nvme disk remains empty.

BIOS is set to boot EFI only with legacy tolerance (secureboot is off).

Some stuff appears in /boot/efi but that's an ext4 partition...

    15.0 did work fine yesterday.

  21. In absentia.

Mrs Miasma and myself drove down to the county clerk's office and handed our signed and dated absentee ballots to the guy behind the desk.

It would have been more convenient to just deposit them into a ballot drop-box but we don't have those anymore.

In a state where a medium sized database could track the names and addresses of every eligible voter (590,784 people in total), we're afraid of ballot-box stuffing.

    We're a deeply stupid people.

  22. My current project at work is on hiatus as the client is looking for more funding. I've spent the last week looking at possible job prospects. Things don't look good.

None of my contacts have any projects that I could help with. LinkedIn is even more awful than before, if that's even possible. The market is being completely swallowed by AI mania. Posts about how to use AI effectively are interspersed with posts about how people can't find a job. Every job offer is in some way related to AI. An AI startup in stealth mode, experience with Claude Code required, or (my favorite) a project that comes down to "take this AI output and make it look good".

I guess it's time to install opencode on my machine and learn some new stuff. I'm still skeptical, but being ignorant about this is no longer an option for me it seems.

  23. Strangeland is real bad, but in a way that is very enjoyable. Dee Snider's scenery chewing pseudointellectual monologues are so much fun and Robert Englund shows that nobody can chew more scenery than he can. Also, the 90s tech culture stuff is cringe in the best way like explaining what "IM" means.

  24. Today, I've done a little work on my shell script that uses RegExs on my chapter files to find possible editing issues.

I'm pretty happy with the results from today's change. Though I'm not completely sure the new RegEx works across multiple paragraphs. Even without that definitely working, it finds a bunch of new stuff to check on The Novel.

  26. This has been a rough week for cyber defenders. Colleagues, friends, sleepless zombies, I am writing to assure you - the week is dead and over. Good riddance.

Things will be tough for a while, but as usual, good people get together and fix problems. The Sun rises, and we get stuff fixed.
Vulnpocalypse or not, we got this. And, technology will catch up.

    Until then, risk leaders:
    1. We must make the case for an extreme landscape shift, and ask for significantly more budget. If we don't get it - I'd consider leaving for an org that does realize the change. You're in high demand.

    2. Stay relevant. Get yourself and your people on agents. Secure your agents.

    3. Prioritize, and reprioritize. We can't do everything.

    4. And while we will keep at it, self-care is not an effin' joke and should be a priority for our teams. Marathon != sprint.

    --
And as always, when you want to secure your agents - do keep Knostic in mind.

  27. Part of being an author is putting yourself out there. MileHiCon is my event for that.

If you’re around #denver this weekend. Grab a day ticket and pop in. Say hi to authors, artists and other creatives and so many fans of genre stuff in general!

  28. Crypto loves to hype new features. But a longer feature list doesn't automatically mean a better app. Sometimes the most useful product is just the one that lets you get the job done without a headache.

    Beyond the basic swap

A good swap platform puts the important stuff where you can see it: what you're swapping, roughly what you'll get back, what fees you might pay, and which network you're on.

Clear explanations and sensible warnings go a long way too. They help people dodge mistakes that never needed to happen.

AviorSwap is one project you might look at if you're learning how crypto swaps work. Same as with any platform, check the supported assets, network compatibility, transaction details, and docs before you jump in.

Working features are just the start

Good product design is about features that work and are easy to understand. It accepts that users come in with very different levels of experience, and it gives them enough info to make their own call.

In Web3 you're usually the one fully responsible for your assets, so getting that balance right matters even more.

So what's your top priority when picking a swap platform: simplicity, the range of assets, fees, or transparency?#web3 #product #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community
What actually makes a crypto swap platform useful?

  29. I was asked to compare my mtt.sh tool to Dissect's target-mount utility. I had honestly never heard of Dissect before I received this request, but I figured I'd give it a go.

Looking at the documentation, it's apparent that target-mount only supports single-disk images. That's strike one.

Dissect is a Python based framework and we need to "pip install" with the usual dependency dance. Strike two. mtt.sh is a self-contained shell script (plus three optional OS package dependencies).

So I set up a venv and did the "pip install dissect".Before too long the Dissect stuff was installed. And it failed-- strike three.

I see no point in researching this further.

  30. wow, this has been a busy month. work, art, family, life, all kind of peaks here right now.

I'm stressed out but also happy. scared and also fulfilled.

looking ahead now at and December. this is a shot I took last November in my beloved . I always miss Prague.

I'm quite grateful to be where I am right now, even while it feels chaotic af too. it's a much better place than a few years ago. I have a lot of stuff I'm eager to process
