I was intending this to be a blog post, but I guess it'll be a long Fedi post instead since I have a large char limit on my instance :-P Time to explain what I've been doing lately!
Basic, new music player: "Aika". I've named it after the character in Agent Aika because I like that anime and I'm just a lewd girl like that. If you know me well, you should not be surprised. Ask me who my Reika program is named after sometime...
Anyway, Aika is NOT a replacement for #Benben (that ain't going away, I love it too much). I gotta emphasize that. Benben will continue. Aika is simply another option for people. This one is special in that the UI is entirely based around #ZeroMQ sockets. So imagine having a local player, running like you see here, but then you can securely connect additional "Remote UIs" to it over a network. These can just connect/disconnect whenever you need, however many you want, and Aika will just keep doing its thing. Kinda like MPD, but easier to use, and you always have a local interface like you see here, never just an invisible process in the background. I call these "Remote UIs". Extremely useful for someone like me who goes around the house to multiple computers while wearing Bluetooth headphones... but it could technically also stream the audio over the network in the future, too. Anyway, I call this ZeroMQ UI stuff the "Remote UI Protocol", and it's Aika's main special thing.
Also, unlike Benben, this one will allow you to add and remove files while it's running through a built-in file browser. So whereas Benben was designed to be like a super sexy version of mpg123 from the start, Aika will be more like a terminal version of Audacious. Sorta. It'll still have its own feel.
Oh, and Aika uses plugins so that support for audio formats, playlist formats, backends, etc. can be changed without changing Aika itself (herself?). So that's another difference. They're just .so files.
The video here just shows a temporary UI that I'm using while I build out the Remote UI Protocol and get things working. It'll look different and more complete in time. This UI here is not yet a true Remote UI, it's entirely local and built into Aika (the "Local UI"), but it is using the Remote UI Protocol over ZeroMQ internally while I design it. Once I have that protocol finished and implemented, I'll convert this Local UI to not use ZeroMQ for some things (for latency reasons), then implement a true example Remote UI that mimics Benben's interface and can run on an entirely separate machine (even across the world if you want).
Lastly, Aika is written in Object #Pascal, not #CommonLisp. So whereas Benben has a 106mb binary (uncompressed, give or take), Aika currently has a 900kb binary. Whereas Benben uses 133 mb of RAM at runtime to play the Quake 2 soundtrack in FLAC format, Aika currently uses 5mb. Also, Aika has been using about half to one quarter less CPU than Benben so far.
It'll be quite a while until Aika is ready for a v0.1.0 release, but I've got the beginnings going on here. The code will be a bit messy at first until the protocol designs solidify, the UI is very incomplete, there's no resampling yet, and it crashes/deadlocks sometimes... but it's at least able to play albums in FLAC format right now :happyremi: https://fossil.cyberia9.org/aika/
As for Benben.. I blasted through the milestones for v1.0.0 a lot quicker than I expected, so expect it out sooner than later. Maybe mid summer.
EDIT: Oh, and Aika is specifically targeting any POSIX-compatible OS. I'm actually testing things fairly regularly on #Haiku to ensure it works there in particular. -

That was probably meant as a joke, but a good #SoundDesigner can make an entire track from nothing but one short #VocalSample, and you'd never know it.The human voice has lots of great #textures and #harmonics that easily lend themselves to #SoundDesign techniques like #GranularSynthesis and #resampling. Add in a healthy dose of the usual effects (like #reverb, #delay, #chorus, #distortion, #repitch, etc.), and the possibilities are nearly limitless.
Sorry for the info dump; Sound design is one of my lifelong passions, and I can't help chiming in when someone brings up audio #sampling. I hope you at least found it somewhat interesting. 😅

Piketon school closed for radioactive material being sold 'as-is' - Carlos MathisPIKETON, Ohio (WDTN) — A vacant school in southern Ohio has caught the attention of people across the U.S. as it heads for auction.
On Saturday, Aug. 17, Zahn's Corner Middle School in Piketon will be auctioned. The listing displays the 53,000-square-foot building, on around 9.83 acres, selling for a minimum of $270,000.
In May 2019, the Scioto Valley Local School District reported that enriched uranium was located inside, and that neptunium 237 was outside of the building, which prompted the closure of the school.
According to a statement from the Scioto Valley Local School District, the U.S. Department of Energy believed the "radioactive material" presence was due to "stratospheric fallout" from nuclear testing during the 1950s and 1960s. A contradictory opinion found it to have resulted from Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, nearly five miles away.
A spokesperson for the Pike County General Health District confirmed to Nexstar's WDTN that an independent resample study of the inside of the building occurred in late February and early March to identify "all contaminants of concern." At this time, test results are being finalized.

#roctoolkit got support for new "speexdec" resampler, that combines speex for fixed rate convertion and decimation/expansion for dynamic part needed to compensate clock drift.

It works surprisingly fine. The decimation affects only 5-20 samples/second. When base rates are equal, it's VERY cheap. And it follows scaling factor with better precision than speex.
This resampler can be used as a fallback for CPU-constrained environments.

My use case for this is taking #LogicProX projects that were originally recorded and/or mixed in 44.1kHz and #resampling the entire project to a higher sample rate, which gives #MIDI instruments and time-based effects such as #reverb and #delay the potential to have higher quality, even if lower quality #audio itself can't be upsampled.

If you're trying to #resample you likely need to pull up the Project browser panel and use "Copy/Convert File(s)... ^K" under the Audio File drop-down menu and check "Change file reference in Project Audio"
I always make a New Alternative... in the File > Project Alternatives menu before making major changes that the undo button won't fix. This will save your project when it gets messed up.

- ..except when they aren't. My first sessions resulted in a lengthy list of "how do I do X" questions I had to figure out later. Some I still haven't.
- You WILL hit that polyphony limit. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but feels like 8 sounds. Any polyphonic or overlapping melodies better be a sample, or you're SOL. As a seasoned 4-channel tracker user I can deal with it, but I suppose this will be a dealbreaker for many.
- No resampling, which would help a lot with the aforementioned issue.
- Scene arrangement features are extremely basic. While it's great for jamming, probably not so much for writing complete tracks.
- The onboard speaker is a joke, and not a very funny one at that.~ The preset samples are not great. Not really a huge issue IMHO, as this is intended to be a sampler and you should be bringing your own sounds.
I haven't messed around with MIDI yet as I have other stuff for that, but I do intend to give that part a go as well.
