NetCDF and Zarr are essential formats for modern geospatial, climate, and big data workflows, especially as cloud-native pipelines become the norm. Check out these three new R packages created by Patrick van Laake:
- ncdfCF (https://r-cf.github.io/ncdfCF/) - modern interface to NetCDF data.
- zarr (https://r-cf.github.io/zarr/) - native support for Zarr arrays.
- geozarr (https://github.com/R-CF/geozarr) - handling of geospatially referenced Zarr arrays. -

Does urban greenery yield microclimatic cooling? Spatial analysis of Calgary (Summer 2025) shows a non-linear NDVI vs LST response.
🛠 Stack: Google Earth Engine (Landsat 8/9, Sentinel-2) + R (terra, tidyverse).
📊 Key Findings:
🔹 Cooling Deficit (NDVI < 0.34): LST stays trapped at 35–36°C. Heat stress overrides evapotranspiration; saplings & isolated lawns fail to cool.
🔹 Tipping Point (NDVI > 0.34): Cooling begins above 0.34. Dense canopy (NDVI > 0.70) suppresses LST below 28–30°C (6–8°C delta).💡 Takeaway: Urban forestry can't just count saplings. Without threshold canopy density, isolated greenery is decoration, not climate infrastructure.

A few weeks ago, the rlas package was archived on CRAN (and therefore also lidR) due to an ASAN issue. The error is very difficult to reproduce, making it impossible to fix it and restore the package on CRAN. Could anyone help?

Last week, I calculated several zonal means in big files, 1M cells raster and a >200k polygons vector. I used terra::zonal or stars::aggregate and both took around 30 minutes. Then, I tried zonalstatistics from #QGIS using {qgisprocess} and took 30 seconds!
Anyone knows why this huge difference?

It automatically generates the corresponding R code to reproduce the map identically.
{mapsf.gui} is useful for familiarizing yourself with {mapsf} and learning about its main features.The app was designed and developped by @mthv, Hugues Pecout and I.
