For me, #HolyAnarchy is recognizing that sometimes the priest and and the Levite (the "good" religious people) walk on past the stranger lying in the ditch, but the Samaritan (the outsider, unbeliever, or heretic) stops to be a neighbor to the one in need.

It's about choosing to be in #solidarity with people, not because they believe the right #Christian things or because the law says we have to, but because it's the right thing to do -- dare I say, the #Jesus thing to do?

My purportedly "Christian" nation won't make laws or elect leaders who will ensure #equity and #justice to "the least of these." It's not going to come from the top down. If the #church is going to be what the church is called to be, rather than an imperial institution, we need to join in on God's work -- and I suspect we'll learn more of God in the process.

I intended #HolyAnarchy to be a thought-provoking hashtag, rather than a prescriptive one.

Instead of a new religious-political "system," I think of it more as an ethos of mutuality arising from the Spirit.

When I put the two terms together, it's "holy" as in "of or in service to God" and "anarchy" as in "voluntary cooperation for the common good, without top-down authority." A bit loose with those definitions, because, again, it's an ethos, not a method or prescription. More precise definitions might work better in other contexts.

So what I would say is that #HolyAnarchy is mutuality, solidarity, and community care which is intimately connected to our spirituality and religious service. It's an evolving idea, and I'd love to see others bring their own thoughts, but that's the gist.

  7. Pieris japonica. Japanese pieris.

As spring comes into full bloom, I am seeing colours around my patio that I would not have chosen to put together. There are two red blooms and a pink one that are right beside each other, and I wonder if the landscape designers were deliberate in their choices or if I am enjoying an accidental combination.

One of the red blooms is in a pot that I can move, so I may do that. It is one of eight big pots that I have inherited from the previous owner of this condo, and I love watching as all the plants emerge from their winter hibernation.

Rhododendron simsii. Azalea. Rhododendon simsii. Azalea.

There is an additional rhododendron that is in bud and beside the others, but I don’t yet know what colour the flowers will be. Regardless, I will love it because it borders my patio and I can see it from my living room.

As I look at these plants all in close proximity to each other, it occurs to me that everything I know about complementary, contrasting, and clashing colours doesn’t apply to nature. No matter what red and pink hues adorn these plants, they go together beautifully.

  8. Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) in a field of lesser celandine (Ficaria verna). I'm in Pennsylvania where they were originally introduced in 1800s, both as ornamentals. The Japanese knotweed was also planted for erosion control. Now horribly invasive but at least the bees like them. #JapaneseKnotweed #LesserCelandine #InvasiveSpecies #weeds #plants #ecology #pennsylvania #pollinators #polygonaceae #ranunculaceae

  14. CW: 百物語 Hyaku Monogatari – 7 – (10/07/2023) - Bugs

“Are you Japonica or Americana or maybe Fuliginosa?” asked the Silverfish. “You’re big enough to be Surinamensis.”

“Pardon,” I said. “I’m Gregor Samsa.”

    “With that accent, definitely Germanica.”

    “Hello, Gegor Blattella.”

    “No, Samsa.”

    “Sorry, Samusu-san.”

This was a confusing conversation. “What are talking about?” I asked.

“If you climb the dresser, you can see in the mirror.” The silverfish said, waving its antenna at a tall brown pole.

    “I can’t climb that!”

    “Try.”

It was easier than it looked and once on top, I looked in the mirror.

    “I’m a cockroach!”

    “Germanica,” the silverfish added.

    “Haven’t you read ‘The Metamorphosis.’”
