  6. Why Florida’s Orange Industry Is In Free Fall

People like to complain about agricultural inspections at borders, but preventing something like this is why inspections are needed.

  7. "A Single Genomic Region Controls Primocane Fruiting in Tetraploid Blackberry"

To explain to folks who eat berries, but don't grow them, cane berries mostly flower (and therefore have flowers that turn into fruit) on 2nd year canes (floricanes). If breeders can extend the trait some cane berries have of being able to flower on first-year canes (or primocanes), growers get fruit the first year they plant the plants.

  8. The autumn foliage puts on a great display. The flowers are large and cream-colored. And reportedly the wood is good (I say reportedly because I have not yet had occasion to see it). It's certainly worth growing in the home garden and might have real possibilities for more if breeding attention were turned to it again. #FruitToot #Botany #PlantBreeding

  9. By the time I'd tried to peel them and rummage through the flesh to get the seeds out, there wasn't enough flesh left to be worth processing...too much work for too little pay off. Although pleasant enough to eat, where you can let your teeth and tongue do the work and no flesh is wasted sticking to the sides of the pot or any utensils used

It would be interesting to see what you could do with medlar if breeding were resumed in a major way. It's a lovely plant! #FruitToot #Botany #PlantBreeding

  10. No teacher like experience...

I've eaten medlars before this, but it's just been tasting one or two of known cultivars.

This time it was buying a bag of unknown provenance.

I just realized medlars are like the goatse of the pomological world.

  11. Free, but to ASHS members only, I guess.

ASHS is a good professional society if you're interested in fruit-growing and vegetable production. They do have a student level of membership too.

  12. "In this episode of Scigest, we speak to Jemma Whiten, Head of Global Marketing at T&G Global. We dive into the incredible story behind these two apple brands and learn how T&G Global have built enduring and growing consumer demand and supply, with these brands truly standing out on the global stage"

  14. Raki krumbull, or rakia made from grapes and plums. My first time trying it.

I was having this for breakfast, which would not be my norm, but reportedly it isn't out of the norm here for people to have rakia in the morning, even though the alcohol content will strip paint.

I only finished about half of this small glass. I had an appointment to go to and it would not do for me to be lurching around.

  15. The American Pomological Society is finally digitizing more of its journals.

"The new website for the Journal of the American Pomological Society (journal.americanpomological.or) is now live and ready to accept manuscript submissions for review."

  16. When I was volunteering at The Huntington, I got to be adjacent to this work. Sadly, I never got to work directly on the avocados (I'm always more interested in fruit/nuts than any other plants).
