#Prosena #siberita (#Tachinidae, #Diptera) is a species of #fly native to #Europe, #Asia, and Australia; it has been present in the #USA as an introduced species (#neozoon) since around 1925, as its #larvae are #parasitoids of beetles of #Scarabaeidae and were used for the #biologicalcontrol of the Japanese beetle. The #adults feed on nectar.

#Beetles of the genus #Callistethus (#Rutelinae, #Scarabaeidae) are mainly distributed across the #tropics and #subtropics of #Asia, as well as Central and South #America. Ming-Zhi Zhao (2026) described four #newspecies within the #Callistethus #auronitens species complex, assigned two species to the genus Callistethus, and elevated two subspecies to full species status. #Biodiversity

Please also like my newest #YouTube #video, showing some #behaviors of the #beetle #Mimela #junii (#Scarabaeidae), which is a #neozoon in #CentralEurope and Germany. It originally is #native to the #Mediterranean region. My video shows #selfcleaning behavior, #locomotion, #flying ssprcts and response to threat (#thanatosis).

The #rosechafer #Cetonia #aurata (#Scarabaeidae) is distributed from Europe to Asia. The #saprophagous #larvae develop over about two years in Central Europe in #soil substrates often under #deadwood. According to R. Beaven et al. (2025), #rectalcomplexes as in C. autata (larvae only) are recycling systems of the #gutcontents and #evolved #independently within Scarabaeideae.

Last evening I stumbled across this big splendid pair of grapevine beetles (_Pelidnota punctata_) on a grapevine- and bittersweet nightshade-covered stretch of fence by the tracks. I saw one that was flying around come to rest on the vines, and that was when I saw the second one hidden in the leaves!
They seemed to nose at each other's butts, made more laborious because they were on a vine really too flimsy to hold both of them. When one of them mounted the other and everted clasper-like organs I was certain they were going to mate, but after more awkward manoeuvring they went their separate ways. Still, what a serendipitous encounter.

The burrowing bees are so cute. They'll sit right at the entrance of their holes and, when you pass by, immediately retreat. However if you wait patiently they'll come back up again.
I thought I also saw immense bees buzzing around, but they turned out to be furry scarab beetles of some kind!

This female Rhinoceros Beetle was trapped by human infrastructure and artificial lights. When it was freed it made a loud hissing squeak by rubbing its wings against the abdomen. This (6 cm ) female has a shining black armour and golden fur on the belly. The males have huge horns and are said to be the strongest animal on the planet. They are able to lift up to 850 times their own body weight. The strong 'claws' did not want to let go of that hand. It is back in the bush now.

I'm not sure what these scarabaeid beetles are exactly (chafers of some sort?), but they're very clumsy fliers and, like weevils, their defense mechanism is to simply let go of whatever they're holding onto and drop like a rock. I was taking photos of this beetle the other night when it did just that and fell onto my messenger bag.

Bonsoir Mastodon!
#faebruary jour 5 : les scarabées. J’ai choisi le cétoine doré mais j’ai galéré pour réussir à avoir un rendu qui rappelle sa carapace irisée.

It was clearly #Beetle Night here in #Canberra last night. Here's the view from my Automated #Moth Trap just after midnight. There were enormous numbers of the small scarab Phyllotocus macleayi. This shot also includes two, maybe three, different #mantisfly species.

Since I've been hearing cicadas, last night I went out to look for emerging ones on the big willows by the lake. I didn't find any, but it was a pretty good night for beetles. A big chonky scarab, a velvety-looking click beetle, and a bunch of the glossy red-brown pole borers that always make me think of candied pecans. I haven't given into the temptation to put one in my mouth…yet.
