So I'm bored turning a part on my lathe & looking at a box on my wall that holds various cutting tools. Many hundreds of times I've seen the writing that starts out "Bendix" & I'm like yawn, brake parts. For the first time I read the whole thing: "Bendix Telemetering Equip. To W.S.P.G." OMG! In the late 1940s this box contained the world's first telemetry equipment used in captured German V2 rockets that were being tested at White Sands Proving Grounds, NM!

It's Schrödinger "Ding" the super-symmetric, super-positioned, quantum string theory kitty! He occasionally liked to take breaks from crunching numbers to go camping with his human.

My Dad on his ground up rebuilt, modified, and hopped up 1939 Triumph T100 Tiger. The T100 featured a 498cc 360° parallel twin OHV four-stroke engine. Dad likely bored it out and certainly CC'd, ported, and polished the head. I'm guessing the photo is from around 1947.

Here's the view from across the canyon. The main part of the structure, the wall on the left, is actually an exterior wall with an internal open porch space between it and several rooms.

Looking the opposite direction down the canyon from the previous photo.
Can you imagine raising kids in this environment? Kids would love it, but as a parent, I'd be a wreck. But then I guess it's no worse than kids climbing trees or riding bikes on busy urban streets.

Remembering the Ohio Kent State University massacre, May 4, 1970.
"Twenty-eight National Guard soldiers fired about 67 rounds over 13 seconds, killing four students & wounding nine others, one of whom sustained permanent paralysis. Students Allison Krause, 19, Jeffrey Miller, 20, & Sandra Lee Scheuer, 20, died on the scene, while William Schroeder, 19, was pronounced dead at Robinson Memorial Hospital...shortly afterward." Here's a contrarian take on a popular structure to photograph in canyon country. At the right time of day the sun reflects off of the canyon floor & lights up the cliff overhang turning it a bright orange & making it look like flames. Of course, most images you see are grossly oversaturated to enhance the effect. But here it is in B&W so you can enjoy the textures & contrast rather than oversaturated color.

A Sierra Wave Cloud at sunset over the Truckee Meadows in Northwest Nevada. From Wikipedia: "Known as lee waves, Sierra Waves form as winds hit the Sierra Nevada and are forced to rise, causing water vapor to condense as it cools and forming lenticular clouds on the leeward side of the mountain range."

Dangberg Home Ranch was founded in the Carson Valley in 1857. The nearby town of Minden, Nevada, was part of the H. F. Dangberg Land and Live Stock Company.

I found this early aluminum pull-tab beer can in the desert the other day. It probably dates to the late '60s or early '70s. It's in remarkably good shape. The backside is shiny bare aluminium from sun and wind blown sand. I never drank much beer, but of all of the crappy American beers, I liked Busch the best.

Ooo, Earthquake! I hope it was nearby, because if it wasn't it was a big one!
Ooo, M5.7 in Silver Springs, ~40 miles from me. I hope everyone is okay and there wasn't a lot of damage.
Ah, yes, the earthquake was in the good old Walker Lane fault complex. It may one day replace the San Andreas fault...once California tumbles into the ocean, lol.

Here's a shot of the 4014 before it passed under me to enter the Williams Loop in the Feather River Canyon of Northern California. It was really boiling steam and smoke chugging up hill in the Sierra.

I was hoping for some steam action because it was cool and humid, as compared to two years ago when the 4014 last traveled this route, but I didn't expect this!

Union Pacific No.4014 "Big Boy," a 4-8-8-4 steam engine, rolling along the southern edge of the Black Rock playa in Nevada yesterday morning. I'm off to try and catch the 4014 crossing the Clio trestle tomorrow morning. There's a forecast for rain and the humidity will be high. High humidity makes for nice steamy steam engines!

The centimeter wide rock layer that records the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary that ended the rein of the dinosaurs. (It's the brown layer between the coal & light claystone layers.) It was created by the fallout of a 12km impactor that created the 250km wide Chicxulub crater offshore of the Yucatán Peninsula. The layer contains shocked quartz & an anomalous concentration of the element iridium marking an extraterrestrial impact.

While driving through Monitor Valley in central Nevada yesterday, far off in the distance, I noticed a large shape. Using my binoculars I couldn't figure out what it was. There was a road that went toward it but stopped about a half mile from what I could now see was a semi-tractor. Yup, a big rig tractor in the middle of the desert, no road, and a horse skull in a bird's nest in the driver seat.

I don't know how I missed this awesome geology map tool, saw it recently here on Mastodon (and now I've forgotten who to credit for it) but here you go, just zoom in on any region to find out about the rock formations, fossils, and faults. You can also draw elevation profiles. And the entries contain linked citations to the reports the information was drawn from!
