  3. @elaterite @BobHorowitz Here it is, by special request: the woman who dashed out to sweep the pavement in front of her house, especially for my photo.

The village is Miranda del Castañar, an amazing time-warp place. There is a great campsite nearby, El Burrro Blanco; I absolutely love the place.

  8. @elaterite Amazing: I took a very similar photo last year on the other side of the Atlantic – in #Greece. It's one of maybe three #Aermotor windmills I've encountered over here in Europe.

Gosh, just got an alert for 7+ KP. Can probably see it in Zurich if I stepped outside. That satellite data is epic!

  10. @elaterite I cut & pasted part of your question ("AI Free" third-party certification organization) into DuckDuckGo and found this site which seems to be what you were asking for. aifreecert.com/

Rather than duplicate the effort, it would probably be better to work with them to build up the systems for verification. Also, invite them onto Mastodon. #FPNF

  11. @elaterite hi thanks for your comment, yes indeed this is what creates the #fascination of #paleontology, first to discover something that only accidentally got in circumstances to be fossilized, and thern to hold these prehistoric remains not only in hands, but even be able to scientifically analyse them with a diversity of modern #methods and finally to contribute to an understanding about how and why life could #evolve on #Earth. Not too much is more interesting and even more important.

And that’s the point, isn’t it. As long as an appliance workd without connecting, why would you? On the other hand, my PV set up is connected to the internet because it’s the only means I have to monitor/manage the system… until I find another tool which does the job without connecting to ‘god knows where’…

The installers argued that it helps them ensure my system is in good health and also that if I report a problem, the can go online to have a look at it… it bothers me though I can’t put my finger on why it does just yet.

Oh, that very photograph was a living part of my inner world as a young boy: visions of daring discoveries and inventions, and the ideal of persisting against the odds and not listening to all those conventional voices around you that say it can't be done. Seeing it here brings back powerful memories.

And yes, you are right, Daniels's image is not just a coincidental record, visually & artistically it stands on its own as a true photograph.

  16. CW: Ungulate horns

    @elaterite
We call them #antlers. Cattle have horns. Antlers shed each year. Weathering bleaches them.
Found these in Five Rivers back when that #Alsea river feeder was open to #salmon #fishing. Perhaps this #elk was a victim of hunting season after escaping wounded.

  18. I forgot I was going to tag @elaterite and @davepolaschek because they helped me figure out how to do it. And I think a few others helped as well ( @claralistensprechen3rd ?) Last year I still had my old Fedi account so of course I lost all the tips I got. Anyway, this year going much easier!

  24. Huzzah! @shom and @elaterite - I think you might find this particularly interesting…

I managed to add a handful of custom metadata fields to #darktable (I only have a few folders of images there as a test) to store film/camera/development info. After a bit of troubleshooting and reading output from #exiftool, I added a formula in the export metadata settings to concatenate a handful of them into “description” exif fields. Now adding the image in my mastodon app (mona) pulls in the description as alt-text just like my #Lightroom / #NLP images do. I uploaded the same image in a #Piwigo album and it pulls in the same.

One MAJOR hurdle overcome - I have 9-ish months left of free Lightroom thanks to my new Nikon, so I have that long to try to figure out the rest.

(By the way this image was reversed with negadoctor, and it’s a test image from the Moskva I bought in NY.)

  25. #PhotoOfTheDay is of "that hill" as seen from Zubriskie Point in Death Valley National Park. This was taken back in 2011 I think, but I was reminded of it by yesterday's fantastic photo of the same hill by @elaterite.

  26. I've been using to process my RAW drone photography for almost a year now.

It takes a while to get used to it, a lifetime to learn it all, but I've been enjoying the experience and I think I'm getting the hang of it. There are some great resources out there to help learn how to use it.

Thanks @elaterite for pointing me in this direction.

  27. So I'm bored turning a part on my lathe & looking at a box on my wall that holds various cutting tools. Many hundreds of times I've seen the writing that starts out "Bendix" & I'm like yawn, brake parts. For the first time I read the whole thing: "Bendix Telemetering Equip. To W.S.P.G." OMG! In the late 1940s this box contained the world's first telemetry equipment used in captured German V2 rockets that were being tested at White Sands Proving Grounds, NM!
