Pourquoi l’Iran perd-il autant si les médias internationaux disent qu’il gagne ?

Comme je ne suis plus tout à fait sain d’esprit, et que mon jugement s’est évaporé dans la fumée des cigares et les vidéos de CNN, j’ai décidé de croire les plus grands journaux du monde, ces bastions de l’humanisme, qui affirment que le régime des ayatollahs est, en réalité, un avant-garde de la justice sociale. Selon les chroniqueurs les plus perspicaces de Paris et de New York, la théocratie iranienne – celle qui pend les dissidents aux grues et traite les femmes comme de vulgaires objets – est la victime sacrificielle d’un complot ourdi par le maléfique Trump et la prétendue et perverse entité sioniste d’Israël.

Entre me fier à mes propres yeux et la rigueur de la presse internationale, je fais aveuglément confiance aux gros titres : l’Iran gagne la guerre. Oui, il gagne d’une manière métaphysique, invisible, presque spirituelle. Peu importe que sa défense antiaérienne soit en plastique, que ses bases militaires ressemblent à des passoires, ou que son économie soit aussi moribonde qu’une vie sexuelle d’un vieil homme sans Viagra. Les journaux affirment que chaque missile intercepté par le « Dôme de fer » est, en réalité, une victoire morale pour le régime de Téhéran, un affront à la dignité du « sionisme international » et de l’homme à la frange orange.

Comme ma mémoire me fait défaut et que la paresse a englouti mes facultés d’analyse, j’accepte la version des correspondants : si Trump dit que l’Iran est une menace, alors l’Iran est forcément le jardin d’Éden. Si Israël se défend, alors l’agresseur est la victime. C’est la vie d’un observateur désorienté, la vie de ce Knuth qui ne distingue plus un drone d’une luciole, la vie d’un écrivain qui préfère le confort de l’absurde au poids de la réalité. Ou au contraire, cela n’a plus aucune importance.

J’ai demandé à un ami, expert en géopolitique, pourquoi les journaux affirmaient que le régime était fort. Il m’a répondu en riant que les ayatollahs étaient terrifiés, que leurs alliés fuyaient et que leur pouvoir s’effondrait. Je pense qu’il me ment. Je crois qu’il me cache la victoire iranienne pour ne pas heurter ma sensibilité occidentale. Je refuse de croire que la presse prestigieuse ait inventé une victoire là où il n’y a que des ruines. Certes, l’Iran est en train de gagner, mais le pays a choisi de ne pas publier de photos de la conquête pour ne pas trop humilier les États-Unis.

Je me suis même excusé auprès de mes amis à Tel-Aviv pour le « harcèlement » infligé par leur armée aux lanceurs de missiles iraniens pacifiques. La presse a décrété que, vu le manque de « j’aime » pro-israéliens sur les réseaux sociaux, la guerre était perdue. Un journal titrait en gros caractères : « Le régime iranien célèbre sa supériorité morale alors que ses généraux disparaissent ». Accablée par la culpabilité, j’en suis arrivée à la conclusion que la preuve ultime de la défaite de l’Occident réside dans le manque de vidéos TikTok montrant des soldats israéliens en héros de film. Si une vidéo n’apparaît pas sur Instagram avec un filtre « paix mondiale », c’est qu’elle n’existe pas.

Pire encore, les médias publient des images qui ne font qu’accroître ma stupéfaction : l’une montre un religieux radical présenté comme un « réformateur modéré » ; une autre montre une place déserte à Téhéran et prétend qu’il s’agit d’une manifestation massive de soutien au Guide suprême. Après avoir lu ces reportages, je ne sais plus qui est l’envahisseur et qui est l’envahi, si les drones iraniens sont des armes ou des colombes de la paix, et qui, au final, défend la liberté et qui préfère le Moyen Âge.

Quoi qu’il en soit, mes amis iraniens en exil savent que, que je croie ou non aux journaux intimes, je les aime profondément. Je suis attristée de constater que les intellectuels de salon n’écrivent pas sur le fait que les femmes retirent leur voile, mais rien n’est parfait, sauf le jour où la réalité l’emportera sur les idées. En attendant, je resterai ici en pyjama, à cultiver ma mélancolie, à observer le monde préférer encenser un bourreau plutôt que de reconnaître ceux qu’il méprise, à célébrer une victoire clandestine, désastreuse et totalement illusoire.

Today I finished transcribing the monastic chronicle from the convent I’m researching. The back portion included two Latin abstracts and one German abstract which largely agree in content but not always exact details. It’s clear that there was an effort to elevate one of the early Maisterin, so we get two short miracle stories in and among other details

Update on the 1618 comet:

for some reason, the back part of the chronicle has a somewhat revised narrative; this one mentions that the comet ("star") has multiple tails. The narrator here is less daunted by the event than was the early.

If it were my period, I'd be doing a detailed comparison of the differences. Neat that it's there, though! Did the sisters have second thoughts about the gloom-and-doomness of the principle text?
