  5. #PaperClub is back for the start of 2025, and we're kicking off with Patterson et al (2024), who present a PCP-corrected stalagmite d18O record from Vietnam, spanning 45-4 ka. Interesting paper, and the whole 'PCP impacts on d18O' thing has been getting quite a lot of airtime in recent years. Hopefully without sounding like a hater, I remain a bit skeptical. In this instance, the model assumptions include a feeding stalactite drip rate of 1 drip/second, which seems too high for LGM (where PCP effect on the stal was greatest). For stalactite PCP to be recorded in a stalagmite, there must not be sufficient residence time for re-equilibration to occur. I would love to see a sensitivity test of the drip rate on the model.

Growth rates during the 'peak PCP' period were also extremely low (<5 um/yr), which suggests to me that growth was likely not continuous over the period. d18O vals were high, I assume there was greater opportunity for disequilibrium to drive the signal rather than PCP?

Anyway, I'm definitely no expert in d18O kinetics, and I'm looking forward to hearing the opinions of the group, and anyone else who has read the paper :) I am really happy to be wrong about this, as there are lots of clever people on the paper who know more than me about this stuff!

  8. Awesome twisty ceiling on this huge borehole cave passage. I have no idea how Bjorn always wears a white shirt caving and comes out clean each time but it amuses us all greatly.

    aka “Glowworm”
It is not actually a worm, but a fly larvae! I have an ongoing research project studying their use of caves.

  10. My first Ozark cave had zero formations but a lot of fun cave life and the floor was 100% breakdown. Very interesting geologically. This image is near the back of the cave, and Erin from NC State who is a part of a cave microclimate project stands atop this pile of rock. Thanks to Mike Slay for sorting access and leading the trips!

  11. Thanks to this Kempsey Speleological Society team who decided they wanted to spend Saturday bush bashing through lantana and two types of stinger tree in subtropical rainforest to help relocate the abandoned Carrai silver and copper mines (👍 success). There's also gold in these hills, never mined thanks to the impenetrable terrain.

  12. This gorgeous ice curtain-turned-column (yes, it connects floor to ceiling!) was made possible by many days of below freezing (and near / at 0-f temperatures). What a chilly but fun trip underground. And yes, the reflection is on ice as well, there isn't any liquid water here!

  13. CW: slavery cave mapping

"Map of Mammoth Cave [#Kentucky, US] drawn from memory by an early African American guide, Stephen Bishop. It shows the labyrinth of passages that made up the #MammothCave system, now considered the world's longest, as it was known in the early 19th century. It assigns colorful names to various passages, chambers and famous spots along the route. The "Rotundo" is shown, where saltpeter from the cave was processed by #enslaved individuals into #gunpowder for use by American troops during the War of 1812. Underground rivers are shaded and named.
#StephenBishop was born enslaved around 1821. His owner, #FranklinGorin, purchased Mammoth Cave in 1838 and used Bishop as a guide in order to monetize his purchase. In 1839, Gorin sold the estate, Bishop included, to #DrJohnCroghan. Bishop was the first known person to cross the "Bottomless Pit" and thus explore the #cave beyond that point. In 1842, Croghan had Bishop draw a #map of Mammoth Cave, which was eventually published in 1844. Bishop was freed in 1856, one year before his death from tuberculosis."
