I, too, spoke to McConnell for about 20 minutes this morning, and he urged me in the very strongest terms that I should on no account pay any heed to what opinions that son of a bitch in the Governor's mansion may or may not hold, because in recognition of my tireless efforts on Mastodon to promote our glorious National Parks, not least his beloved #MammothCave, that I should consider myself irrevocably awarded the title of Colonel of the Commonwealth, and he wanted to stress that in that measure I was second to no one, not even to Mister Harland Sanders

Scientists found a 33-foot shark skeleton in Mexico. This is much bigger than many sharks today and shows they were huge even during the time of dinosaurs.

Coming out of Mammoth Cave at the end of the Historic Tour at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. It was a hot day, and we were a little reluctant to leave the cool air of the cave behind. Dripstone formations are seen during the Historic Tour at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. All of the people at the bottom of the frame help to give some sense of scale. Read all about it and see more photos at the Burnsland website:

Walking through Mammoth Cave along the path of the Historic Tour at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Although it might not look like it, this was a group tour of around 100 people. And no, I did not hold up the whole group to take this photo, because there was no one for some distance behind us, either. Our group was apparently not that good at staying together! See more photos from the tour at the Burnsland website: https://adventures.burnsland.com/posts/cave-tour-at-mammoth-cave-national-park/

Happy #blackhistorymonth2023! I'm focusing on Black figures from #kentucky this month that may be less well-known outside the state. First video's about the earliest guides at #mammothcave, including Stephen Bishop!

CW: slavery cave mapping
"Map of Mammoth Cave [#Kentucky, US] drawn from memory by an early African American guide, Stephen Bishop. It shows the labyrinth of passages that made up the #MammothCave system, now considered the world's longest, as it was known in the early 19th century. It assigns colorful names to various passages, chambers and famous spots along the route. The "Rotundo" is shown, where saltpeter from the cave was processed by #enslaved individuals into #gunpowder for use by American troops during the War of 1812. Underground rivers are shaded and named.
#StephenBishop was born enslaved around 1821. His owner, #FranklinGorin, purchased Mammoth Cave in 1838 and used Bishop as a guide in order to monetize his purchase. In 1839, Gorin sold the estate, Bishop included, to #DrJohnCroghan. Bishop was the first known person to cross the "Bottomless Pit" and thus explore the #cave beyond that point. In 1842, Croghan had Bishop draw a #map of Mammoth Cave, which was eventually published in 1844. Bishop was freed in 1856, one year before his death from tuberculosis."
