🌿 49 million years ago, a tiny floating fern called Azolla carpeted the entire Arctic Ocean in an 800,000 year bloom that reshaped the planet's climate.
The Arctic was warm then, with 13°C surface temperatures, home to alligators and giant tortoises. Freshwater from rivers floated on dense saltwater, creating a perfect nursery for Azolla. This super-plant doubled its biomass every 2-3 days, and when it died, it sank into anoxic depths where it could not rot, locking carbon into sediment forever.
Atmospheric CO2 crashed from 3,500 ppm to 650 ppm, an 80 percent drop driven largely by a single fern species. This pulled Earth out of its hothouse state and into the icehouse climate we still live in today. The Arctic cooled from 13°C to -9°C, and for the first time in over 500 million years, both poles had permanent ice.

It raises the global temperature bar to 35°C, and averages around 28 or so.
Their CO2 is almost always about 1000ppm and notably doesn't really follow the temperature evolution in its ups and downs.The chart from the movie in the toot above on its own.
The paper's main chart doesn't contain CO2, but in the supplement is one. So I copied that to the main chart.But I feel it is important to digest it together with the information how Earth actually looked when global temperature spiked or dropped. So the movie above is going to be my go-to reference now.

SISAL v3 database and web app
Speleothem Isotopes - Synthesis and Analysis is a global working group of scientists interested in caves, stalagmites and past climate and environmental change. Thanks to the support of PAGES, this has grown into a global network of collaborators who have worked to bring together a database of all speleothem (= cave deposit) records of their oxygen and carbon isotopic composition. Oxygen isotope commonly provided a record of the rainfall that reaches the cave as drip waters.

SISALv3: a global speleothem stable isotope and trace element database
The SISAL team of international cave scientists have just published the latest version of their database of speleothem oxygen and carbon isotope composition, now with trace element composition included. Led by Nikita Kaushal and Franziska Lechleitner, the paper and database is available at Earth System Science Data at: https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/16/1933/2024/
What is new? The SISALv3 database contains speleothem data from 365 sites from across the globe, including up to 95 trace element records, 892 oxygen isotope records and 620 carbon isotope records, all with standardized chronologies.

The global speleothem isotope database SISAL has been updated to version 3. The oxygen and carbon isotope data included in previous versions of the database have been substantially expanded.
SISALv3, contains speleothem data from 364 sites from across the globe, including 94 Mg/Ca, 83 Sr/Ca, 51 Ba/Ca, 25 U/Ca, 29 P/Ca and 14 Sr-isotope records. The database also has increased spatiotemporal coverage for stable oxygen (831) and carbon (588) isotope records compared to SISALv2.

Two consecutive days with #highlatitudedust activity in Patagonia result in a significant large #dust cloud certainly reaching the south central S. Atlantic. Note it is large in extension, but concentrations are just high for the area but low compared to lower latitudes.
