  1. The Polynesian “Long Pause” lasted 1,700 years. Then, around 900 CE, a mega-drought hit Samoa and Tonga just as rain increased eastward. New sediment data suggests thirsty islands, not myth, sent voyagers into the Pacific. #Archaeology #Polynesia #Paleoclimate anthropology.net/p/the-long-pa

  2. A hearth at 2,320m in the Pyrenees was burning charcoal 10,000 years ago. A new open-access radiocarbon database of 124 dates shows the high mountains were never empty, just persistently misread. #Archaeology #Paleoclimate #Pyrenees anthropology.net/p/a-10000-yea

  3. Fossils from Chinese Cave Fill Crucial Gap in History of Gigantopithecus blacki

Deep inside a limestone cave in southern China, paleontologists have uncovered an assemblage of thirteen fossilize…

  6. New climate modeling: the catastrophic droughts that stress-tested the Classic Maya may have needed no volcanic eruption, no solar minimum — just the climate system doing what it does. A thread on what this means. #Archaeology #Paleoclimate #Maya anthropology.net/p/the-maya-dr

  7. New 46000-year record of the southern margin of the Indo-Australian Summer Monsoon just dropped from deadset legend Teresa Dixon at UQ.

A reminder, American Geophysical Union honours nominations are open at the moment! The AGU Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology section have three Honours available, for all career stages. Do you know of any AGU paleoclimate section members who could be nominated? Please share... #geology #Earthscience #paleoclimate #Paleoceanography

  9. New paper out today by my #MPIC colleague (and officemate/friend) Sam Nicholson, who looked at the climatic constraints on speleothem deposition in SW Asia - to the surprise of no-one who spends any time thinking about speleothem deposition, it's not straightforward!

  10. A slow shift in Pacific rainfall around 1,000 years ago dried Western Polynesia and wetted the east. New climate records suggest Polynesian expansion followed freshwater gradients, not collapse. #PaleoClimate #Archaeology #Polynesia #HumanMigration anthropology.net/p/when-the-ra

  11. New climate modeling shows the Harappan world shifted not through sudden collapse but centuries of recurring drought. A story of resilience, adaptation, and the limits of river civilizations. #Archaeology #Paleoclimate #IndusValley #Anthropology anthropology.net/p/when-rivers

  12. What if, when we stroll into California and feel at home, we're reminded not of any paradise of today, but rather Africa in the last ice age? The science, shockingly, checks out...

  13. 🔎 130,000 years of climate history in 2,700 meters of core samples – that's the Eifel Laminated Sediment Archive (ELSA) at #MainzUniversity. The unique geoarchive has been built and expanded by geoscientist Professor Frank Sirocko over the last 25 years. Even though he will soon be taking his well-earned retirement, drilling projects in the Eifel will continue ... Read more in our #JGUMagazine at 👉 magazine.uni-mainz.de/a-life-p

  14. We have a new paper (in GEOLOGY!)
Using a new way to look at #sabkha sediments with clumped isotopes, we found that #warming in the Miocene was not that significant in the horse latitudes. Most of the warming was likely in the mid to high latitudes.
