Three million years of climate history, captured in Antarctic ice
Frozen air from Antarctica is giving scientists a longer look at a climate mystery that has lingered for…

Another excellent edition of Quaternary Australasia is out! I always enjoy the post-conference student reports, especially when the students seem to have really gotten into the 'AQUA vibe'!

@ai6yr
Awesome!
The blessings of #climatechange : first, the couple fled the summer heat and went hiking in the Lombardy mountains. To discover freshly unearthed, 280mio year old amphibian tracks.
Where was that area 280mio years ago? And what was the Northern latitude ice extent, global mean temperature and CO2 concentration?I stitched a chart from #Judd et al 2024 on top of tectonic animations by Meredith 2021 on the left, and a youtube video by Chris Scotese on the right.
Sondrio, Lombardy, Italy can't be seen ^^. But it's supposed to be near the centre of the earths where the Meredith animation shows Greenland and Scandinavia next to it. In the gap between them is England. And just below England to the south east is Lombardy. Or check it out here https://dinosaurpictures.org/ancient-earth/#280 , also by Scotese.
Huge differences in how the two earth models differ in land mass distribution.
Maybe, the new find can help put Lombardy at 280Ma on land in both models, which at the moment see it drowned under water. -
#Peerreviewed: "We interpret this #paleoclimate as summer dry and winter wet—a climate analogous to modern day warm #Mediterranean climates in the Köppen‐
Geiger climate classification system" https://doi.org/10.1029/2024PA004874That'd be Csa. Pic: fig. 4, modern analogs 🤨
Well, thanks to #ClimateChange, they all turn Csa eventually: #OldPosts
Wladimir Köppen – a climate-vegetation genius, and what this has to do with wine

A new paper by #Judd and #Tierney et al maps temperature and CO2 for the last 485 million years. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adk3705
#GavinSchmidt blogged about the new paper: https://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2024/09/phantastic-job/
It raises the global temperature bar to 35°C, and averages around 28 or so.
Their CO2 is almost always about 1000ppm and notably doesn't really follow the temperature evolution in its ups and downs. The chart from the movie in the toot above on its own.
The paper's main chart doesn't contain CO2, but in the supplement is one. So I copied that to the main chart. But I feel it is important to digest it together with the information how Earth actually looked when global temperature spiked or dropped. So the movie above is going to be my go-to reference now.

Not the first attempt, other teams came before, and others will come after.

#GavinSchmidt blogged about the new paper: https://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2024/09/phantastic-job/I needed to see their charts in context with the Earth's land-ocean-mountain configuration so I put it all together in a movie, with one of Chris Scotese's tectonics animations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzvOMee9D1o&t=22s
The two globes are western and eastern hemisphere. Also, because it was global #ClimateStrike today, the music I added is what #IgorLevit played a day after the big #climate protest in 2019, to honour the millions of people on the streets. "We the people will never be defeated".

The first paper for our paper club is this recent one from McKay et al., presenting a thorough investigation of the (supposed?) 4.2 ka event. I'd read it when it was published, but just went through again in more detail, and what a good paper. Robust stats (of course, from this group), and they do a really nice job of building the case. I hope the group enjoys it!

Cool new cave research out today in #Nature! Weij et al. find that in southern Australia glacial periods tend to be moist, contrary to the currently held view that glacial periods are cool and dry in the subtropics.
Neat work from Rieneke and a bunch of Aussie quaternarists!

Destructive analyses make me sooooo nervous, but I am looking forward to finding out how old these samples are! Hopefully the results will be worth the anxiety 😅

If you are suffering some #INQUAROMA2023 FOMO, the good news is the plenaries are being live-streamed. Very enjoyable presentation from Prof. Hai Cheng on speleothem chronologies and quaternary climate change.
