¿Cuántas personas murieron dentro de la Unidad 731?
Aquí es donde hay que tener mucho cuidado.
No existe una cifra definitiva.
Las estimaciones para las personas asesinadas directamente en las instalaciones de Pingfang suelen situarse en miles.
Algunas investigaciones hablan de aproximadamente 3.000 prisioneros muertos allí.Pero las víctimas de la guerra biológica realizada por Japón fuera del complejo fueron muchas más.
Por eso aparecen cifras enormemente diferentes dependiendo de qué se esté contabilizando.
Una cosa es contar a los prisioneros asesinados dentro de Pingfang.
Otra es incluir las víctimas de las epidemias provocadas deliberadamente.
Y otra todavía más amplia es incluir las actividades de todas las unidades japonesas de guerra biológica.
La propia documentación histórica estadounidense advierte de que probablemente nunca podremos establecer un número exacto.
Lo que sí podemos afirmar sin necesidad de inflar ninguna cifra es suficiente.
Miles de personas fueron utilizadas deliberadamente como sujetos experimentales.
Muchas murieron.
Algunas fueron diseccionadas vivas. Se provocaron enfermedades.
Se estudiaron congelaciones y heridas.
Se desarrollaron armas biológicas.
Y parte de esas investigaciones se utilizó en operaciones militares contra población civil.No fue un experimento aislado.
Fue un programa militar organizado.
Y entre sus responsables había médicos y científicos formados en algunas de las instituciones educativas más prestigiosas de Japón.
Ese es precisamente uno de los aspectos que hacen que la historia de la Unidad 731 resulte tan difícil de comprender.
No eran aficionados improvisando atrocidades.
Había médicos.
Había bacteriólogos.
Había laboratorios.
Había financiación militar.
Había informes.
Había experimentación sistemática.Y había una estructura administrativa detrás.
La ciencia no fue un accidente dentro de aquel sistema.
Fue una de sus herramientas.
Después de la guerra, el mundo tuvo que enfrentarse a los crímenes médicos cometidos por los nazis y creó nuevos principios para proteger a las personas sometidas a investigación.
Pero la historia de la Unidad 731 siguió un camino diferente.
Durante décadas fue mucho menos conocida fuera de Asia.
Parte de sus documentos fueron destruidos.
Los principales responsables no fueron juzgados en los tribunales internacionales de Tokio.
Y algunos de los hombres que habían realizado los experimentos pudieron regresar a una vida profesional normal.
La Unidad 731 desapareció físicamente en 1945.
Sus víctimas no.
Sus nombres, en muchos casos, se perdieron.
Sus familias quedaron sin saber qué había sucedido.
Y una parte de la documentación fue destruida antes de que pudiera recuperarse.
Por eso, cuando se habla de la Unidad 731, no hace falta recurrir a historias inventadas ni a cifras imposibles de demostrar.
La realidad documentada ya es suficientemente terrible:
médicos militares utilizaron seres humanos vivos como material de laboratorio para desarrollar enfermedades como armas y después, en muchos casos, destruyeron las pruebas y escaparon de la justicia.

Certainly, Imperial Japan committed many civilian atrocities, especially in Manchuria, Korea and China where the Rape of Nanking stands out as only one of the worst kind.There is no denying that war, whether fought for justice and freedom or for the growth of an empire or out of fear will bring out the worst (and, ironically, the best) in humanity. The human condition is such, I regret to say, that war is a pestilence that will be visited on us as for as long as we survive as a specie. And if our planet has any say in it at all, we are not long from extinction.
So depressing…

My granduncle was one of the settlers. He had believed the propaganda of the Imperial Japanese government. In actuality, human rights, the esteem of racial diversity, and equality, as the government had said, were lies.

I see that the linked article was cited a book that implicated #NewZealand in #WestPapua.
Knew that #Australia had, again as it had following WWI where it let #Japan keep control of #Manchuria, taken the easy path in West Papua "plebiscite". -
