Reluctance
As I’ve written before, I did not want to write this series of posts about Israel, Gaza, Zionism, war, international law, and genocide.
I did not want my Skeptic’s Kaddish blog to become a place for these arguments. I wanted it to remain mostly what it had been: a poetry space, a place for self-exploration, ethical reflection, and personal writing.
But I wrote these posts anyway. And now that I have, I am glad I did.
What I wrote
In my “The Jews” series, I had turned inward, toward Jewish identity, belonging, peoplehood, and inheritance.
In “The shape of attention”, I turned outward, toward Israel, Gaza, attention, wartime judgment, evidentiary standards, and the language people use to describe war.
The four substantive posts in this series examined asymmetry, reality, standards, and language: why Israel receives such sustained attention, what outsiders often miss about the conditions of the war, whether similar claims are judged by similar standards, and how a word like genocide can shape public understanding before the evidence has been fully tested.
Why I began
I began partly in response to anti-Israel writing I had seen in our WordPress poetry community, but not only here.
The same patterns were visible in international media, social media, political rhetoric, and ordinary conversation: a discourse that often seemed one-sided, especially around Zionism and accusations of genocide. When one view was repeated often enough, and rarely challenged in the same spaces, silence did begin to feel like agreement to me.
But for nearly two years, I could not bring myself to write about the war. I was too overwhelmed by the captivity and torture of the hostages held in Gaza, and by credible reports of sexual violence (United Nations). Until the final living hostages were released in October 2025 (AP), I could not step back far enough to write about the war in the careful way I thought it required.
Once I did, the project became more than a response to others. I got a great deal out of it myself.
What it gave me
The degree of anti-Israel messaging and sentiment around the world has sometimes made me question my own sense of reality. Not because I had no convictions, but because repetition has power. When the same accusations appear everywhere, stated with certainty, you begin to wonder whether you are the one who has lost perspective.
The research reassured me because it confirmed that what I believe is not merely emotional loyalty to my people or my country. It is grounded in facts, history, law, comparison, and context.
Since October 7, I have learned more than I ever expected to know about the peoples, history, politics, wars, movements, and power struggles of the Middle East. Much of that learning has been painful. Some of it has been clarifying. All of it has made me less willing to accept simple stories.
The same has been true in the comment sections. When someone engages calmly, I usually find that there is a rational response available. That has been empowering. It has helped me see that my perspective can be argued, defended, and tested against reasonable questions.
What the research clarified
The research also clarified why so much of the discourse has felt wrong to me.
The focus on Israel is often strikingly disproportionate. I do not blame people for being affected by what they see; images from Gaza are painful and morally overwhelming. But media and social media do not show suffering in proportion to its scale. They show what captures attention, generates outrage, and keeps people watching. That imbalance should make us pause. A 2025 humanitarian-crisis coverage study (MJRC) found that Gaza and Ukraine dominated international media attention while several severe, protracted crises received far less coverage; an LSE working paper (LSE) similarly estimated roughly 32,000 major international news articles on Gaza compared with roughly 3,400 on Sudan.
It also became clearer to me how much anti-Zionism rests on caricature: Israel as a white European implant, Jews as foreigners to their homeland, and Zionism as a slur rather than the Jewish national movement. Israeli Jews are not predominantly white European Ashkenazim. Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews are the largest Jewish subgroup in Israel, and many Israeli Jews are of mixed ancestry or come from communities outside Europe (Lewin-Epstein & Cohen). Even Ashkenazi Jews are not simply Europeans who adopted Judaism. Their history includes deep European experience and admixture, but they are also part of a people with ancestral, religious, linguistic, and historical roots in the Levant; genetic studies of Jewish diaspora populations have found shared Middle Eastern ancestry and traced Jewish diaspora communities’ origins to the Levant (Behar et al.; Atzmon et al.). That is why I am not willing to let popular discourse define my identity as a Zionist.
The same is true of the war. Hamas, October 7, Iran, Hezbollah, tunnels, hostages, rockets, and military infrastructure embedded in civilian areas are not incidental details. Reuters has reported on Hamas’s extensive tunnel network and Israeli accusations that Hamas placed tunnels, rocket-firing sites, and other military infrastructure near civilian sites and in densely populated areas; CSIS has described Hezbollah’s rocket and missile threat and the escalation on Israel’s northern border after October 7. Nor is the wider history incidental: rejection of Jewish sovereignty, wars against Israel, terrorism against civilians, and rejected or failed proposals for partition, self-rule, or statehood, including Gaza. Reuters summarizes that Jewish leaders accepted the 1947 U.N. partition plan while the Arab League rejected it (Reuters); Reuters also reported that Olmert’s 2008 proposal included 92.7% of the West Bank, all of Gaza, and land swaps (Reuters). None of this makes Israel blameless or erases Palestinian suffering. But leaving it out turns history into something closer to propaganda.
Truth and ignorance
One thing this process taught me is that the truth is not hidden.
Legal documents, historical records, demographic data, military analysis, serious journalism, and competing perspectives are widely available. That does not make truth simple, and it does not mean every source is reliable. But it does mean that people who want to understand can look.
I find ignorance harder to swallow in today’s information age than it once was. Not ignorance by itself; none of us can know everything. I write about Judaism, Jewish peoplehood, Israel, and, to a lesser extent, the United States because those are subjects I know, live with, or have studied seriously. The specific problem is ignorance combined with certainty, especially when people promote strong opinions about subjects they have not seriously examined. Some ignorance is innocent at first. People know what they have seen, heard, and been repeatedly told. But when evidence is available and people refuse to look, ignorance becomes a choice.
Gratitude and return
I am grateful to my friends in this poetry community for staying with me as I explored these subjects.
I know these were not the posts many came here to read. They were long, heavy, and far from the poems that brought many of us together. But writing them mattered to me, and I am grateful to those who read, listened, questioned, disagreed thoughtfully, or simply gave me the space to think these things through in public.
I am ready to return, mostly, to poetry. But I return clearer and steadier. I am glad I pushed past my reluctance. I am glad I did the research. I am glad I put my perspective on record.
Writing these posts helped me recover confidence in my own judgment. That was worth the discomfort.

Another Postscript on Innovation- Where I’m Going With This "Orientation" Thing
In my last couple of posts I started to make a case for what I admitted might seem like a far-fetched idea: that research into the human condition and the social world could be as deserving of credit and support as scientific and technical research, especially if the goal of supporting “research” with the R & D tax credit is to deliver “public benefits.”
At the very least, non-scientific modes of inquiry – the study of people and society, languages and culture — deserve more credit than currently given (which is, when it comes to the definition of “research” in the R & D tax code, none), because, I suggested, they provide critical balance to innovation, the very thing R & D is supposed to spur. They provide orientation.
I want to talk a little more about the work I want that word to do. I used orientation just to rough out an idea at first, but I’ve come to like it, not in spite of but because of its association with geography, maps, directions, coordinates and a sense of place. Orientation, in the sense I’m using it, is like having an internal compass — a deep sense of where you are, where you ought to go, and the best way to get there.
To take this a little further, orientation requires and stems from a profound sense of place, of the here and now, in all its complexity and connectedness to other places and to what has come before and what is likely to come after. Knowing where you really are is not just local knowledge; it’s knowledge of how you are situated, connected and not connected, where there are continuities and where you can expect discontinuities. For decision-makers, that contextual knowledge is critical to planning and strategy as well as business judgment (and therefore good governance).
Why? Because orientation helps you appreciate and respect limits, providing a much-needed sense of human scale, without which you cannot make innovation meaningful or growth sustainable. Innovation is the spur, orientation, the reins. A good rider needs both. The events of the past few years should make that tolerably clear.
Or, to use the shorthand I’ve been using since my last post: innovation produces wares; orientation creates awareness. I’m not entirely sure of this formulation, because the play on words here disguises as much if not more than it reveals. Wares can take the form of software, hardware, housewares, or other goods and services; I heard someone the other day use the barbarism “thoughtware.” Our word ware comes from an Old English word meaning “goods” – waru. Awareness, on the other hand, would seem to have nothing to do with commodity exchange. We think of it almost as a synonym for consciousness. It derives from the same root as our word guard; to be aware is to keep watch.
But tellingly both words ultimately derive from the same Indo-European root: wer. This particular “wer cluster”
has to do with watching, seeing, and guarding, but the sense of direction is often there—as in guarding (warding) or looking in a certain direction. From this root we get aware and wary, ward (from weard, keeper) and warden, as well as award and reward and wares (things that are guarded or watched).
It’s a good question whether wares need watching because they are valuable or are made valuable by being watched. Likely both, in some measure. Wares – the products of innovation — are the goods awareness watches and keeps, holds and esteems, prizes and guards, the things entrusted to its direction.
