The bait hive bees were put in a 10 frame deep. There were a lot of bees, 4-5 frames of bees, a lot of were festooning on the bottom of the frames so they were probably preparing to build comb down there. Swarm moved into the bait hive / swarm trap on Saturday.

Any beekeepers have previous experience with this size of swarm/colony structure, where you couldn't find the brood?
Queen was likely present: at the end, workers were fanning where the colony was bearding outside with the rest of the swarm on the window (which was 1 wall of the colony and their entry point, 3 stories up, inaccessible).
I guess this could have been an old waypoint for re-supply and not permanent colony, but that seems odd, too.

What is fairly concerning to me is that I never did find brood, larva, or even any pollen. I looked for another access point from the exterior of the building and at the structure of the building for where they might be, watching the bees for paths, but had no luck.
I have a follow-up visit scheduled to look in the attic above the space in a day, because it was just too gnarly to address in one night. 4 hours in the smoke, bees, and heat was almost too much.

Because of the expansiveness of the hive, I never truly found the queen and ended up driving them out... hopefully, to settle in to a swarm box I place nearby with some of their old comb.
What I did find was about 150-175 pounds of unsafe to eat (for humans and prob bees) honey from various years and another 75 pounds of empty comb. Oh, and mice nests, who were undoubtedly living their best lives up until yesterday.
So, a sticky gross mess. The hive, too.

After talking with some new friends, they mentioned they thought they had a new bee colony set up shop in their building. Turns out that that "new" wasn't exactly true, and that we had a scale problem.
Removing multiple cement boards from 30-40 years ago while trying to keep the colony calm in a suit dealing with 85% humidity, 80° F kinda sucked.
I swear, for me these things are either super easy or ridiculously difficult. There is no in between.
