Many people enjoy getting out into nature. Including me, of course: I love a hike as much as the next guy.
But my idea of getting stuck in is certainly different to most. The muddier, the wetter, the swampier I can get, the better. I can't go past a pond, ditch or swamp without wondering how deep it is.
Occasionally I get to find out. This one? In places, I couldn't feel the bottom 😍

Looks can be deceiving:
I was out in the country, exploring areas off the trails like I often do, when I encountered this innocent-looking drainage ditch. The water calmly trickled past the reeds. Nobody was around.
It turned out to be a thigh deep swamp and I plunged in well over my wellies. Oops!
I didn't hurry to get out.

The one good thing about the buddy system when out hiking is that if you fall and get yourself stuck in a spider web, they can come help you out. The bad thing is when your help starts sinking into quicksand right under you!!

On tonight's Countryfile there was a segment where Matt joined a couple of people surveying a mud flat.
They didn't sink very deep, but it's always a delight to see mud flats and muddy wellies on TV.
In all honesty I was a bit jealous. I don't have mud flats anywhere remotely nearby, and I'd love to go 'survey' one.

They might be fast... but quicksand is faster! These folks got dropped, tripped, or stuck in some of the goopy stuff... we can only hope they got out before it was too late!

I love exploring areas away from the trails. I love it when they're muddy. And I really love it when the mud's deeper than my wellies.
This was a boggy area I explored last month. It was great fun!
The secrecy of my adventure. The adrenaline; I might get stuck! The smell of the wet mud, the birds in the trees. It isn't many people's idea of a good day out in the countryside, granted - but for me there's little better.

Woodland bog: A delightfully cool, secluded mud pit I found recently. Obviously, in the spirit of swamp larking, I squelched my way across. And then went back and crossed it again. And again.

I reached the end of the weeds and looked out across the mud flats. Nobody was around. Here was my opportunity to wade out into the mud.
In years to come I'd coin the term 'swamp larking' to describe exploring a wet, muddy area with pretty much the sole purpose being to squelch around in the muck.

#Immich is such a great thing! The memories it brings together… I’ve been collecting lots and lots of photos since my youth, ever since I got my first digital camera. I do look through them from time to time. But they don’t usually make me feel this nostalgic.But ever since Immich started telling me every day how old a photo is… wow… this is where I really start to feel like I’m getting old! Yesterday’s photo was already eighteen(!) years old! It’s officially an adult!

A 24 km hike in 4.5 hours from Ampfing to Neuötting, Germany. In the first 10 km there was nothing noteworthy to track and barely got any better as continued.
The route is primarily in the #Isen valley, thus very flat and lots of fields plus the feeling of no end in sight.
