  1. On my phone, while using Google Contacts app to enter someone's new telephone number, I chose this country code:
    🇨🇦 Canada

After saving the edit, the app has changed the flag beside the country code:
    🇺🇸 Uni.ted Sta.tes

That's a rather tone-deaf change of data that I intentionally entered, since Canada is pointedly not part of the Unit.ed S.tates.

Coding decisions can be political and offensive.

  6. One more detail: I've seen plenty of Cancel/Confirm dialog boxes for destructive actions in which the buttons' locations are reversed. That is extremely dangerous, because if the (destructive) Confirm button is now in the Cancel location, a user trusting their motor memory to instinctively hit the Cancel _location_ will actually trigger the Confirm _action_.

Yup, #IxD (i.e., #InteractionDesign) is pretty straight-forward once you understand the thinking behind it. But it is never trivial.

  11. @tezoatlipoca

    User experience made the iPod.

There were plenty of MP3 players on the market—memory sticks with a battery, a hole for a headphone jack, and some playback software, for a fraction of the cost.

  16. First Apple Glass didn't learn from Windows Vista. Now Apple's Tahoe icons didn't learn from … Apple.

The issue is bigger than a mere disregard for the principles in the 1992 guidelines. It's that training for User Interface designers is nonexistent. As the old guard retires, untrained designers reinvent square wheels.

  22. After 12 yrs I might be losing my enthusiasm for graphic design as a career. It’s undervalued and under appreciated as a skill and salaries stagnating for the few jobs that remain.

Thinking about pivoting to something like #UXdesign #uidesign #interactiondesign or #learningdesign and I’m also curious about #GISmapping but unsure where to start. I think ideally I need professional career guidance (if it exists for adults?)

Pls shout if you have any career change tips!

  23. @thomasfuchs

The Apple Liquid Glass debate is reminiscent of Windows Vista, which also had semi-transparent chrome on its windows and dialog boxes in 2008.

The new generation of Apple designers didn't learn from the old generation's Windows mistakes, I guess.

Or maybe we don't see Apple's vision, yet. Should we listen harder and look harder?

  24. Usability testing!

Setting up a usability testing kit. Observation and analysis form/spreadsheet for now. Will come with more explanation and how to set up and run a usability test. What do you need you need or would think is needed? Both when it comes to templates, but also explanations on how to go about setting up, running, analyze and communicate a usability test?

  25. I remember reading (or should I say experiencing?) "Snow Fall" when it was published ten years ago. As a working web/UX designer and freelance creative lead, I was excited by these affordances of visual journalism but also intimidated, because the effort required serious collaboration by a crack interdisciplinary team.

Snow Fall doesn't look new now, but back then it was a compelling model of what could be.
