First day of the residency is over.
Great place, great people and interesting sounds inside and outside of this old grain storage from 1954.
It was a first model of the GDR for this type of buildings.
Totally happy but also exhausted. Looking forward to the next days. -

Clearing roadblocks in the way of firing up a color furnace.
I am consulting with Mike, who melts color at a big public glass studio in Brooklyn in Gowanus, and for another factory in West Virginia. I know I want a dark, ambery brown. We are going to get 100 pounds of Spruce Pine "color base" - all the raw ingredients for the HotShop glass- minus the decolorants.
We plan on using some of sulfur, black charcoal, and sugar along with a touch of black nickel to darken it up along with a few other things to tint it.
I CNDd a thick scrap of MDF to make a lid for the cement mixer- which Mike mentioned is one of the best ways to mix it up- essential for proper glass. I also cleaned it from refractory cement with hammer, chisel and power washer.
The furnace burner still needs to get its gas/air ratio set with a test firing, and I gotta find a time to rent 2 workstations (it's in the corner between them)

Nächste Woche darf ich mit meinem lieben Freund Jacob an einer Residency in der Uckermark teilnehmen.
Unsere Arbeiten werden am 08. August auch live zu erleben sein. Der alte Speicher ist echt spannend und ich freu mich schon riesig.

Halfway bent.... Well, maybe a little less than half. The colors are the intense colors I am after though. I think I could use a little less powder in my phosphor coating, but they are nice.
I added mercury, tipped off the trap, and dipped it in blockout paint masking off the "N". It took me a little longer, one of these days I will learn that when the patterns are chunky and look like graffiti, they are tricky and will take longer. I did have fun making it.
Next time, I am gonna tell my tube pulling glassblower buddies to pull them thinner. I kept having to stretch certain colors so they would be thin enough to air cool (like the brown arrow up top).
Tomorrow I will come in when the paint is dry and turn on the 60ma aging transformer so it becomes uniformly bright.
