It’s crazy how mad this ‘left click to pan’ is making me. It’s profoundly stupid, with ‘right click to box select’ being the diarrhea icing on the shit cake.
Like, it’s making me so mad I just don’t want to learn this fucking software. My index finger hurts from left clicking and dragging because it’s _all you do_ in this cursed UI.

My Musical Crystal Cave interactive music & light art installed at Future Lab(s) Gallery in North Adams, MA as a part of their annual Glow Show collaborative tapestry.

Participants interact with the two levers on the wall which lets them "DJ" the artwork, independently controlling the generative rhythm and melody. Music is generated in real time with VCV Rack and animated as lights with TouchDesigner.

A first glimpse of the project I am currently working on, with a dear friend of mine.

It's a really really early stage, we are constantly having and testing new ideas. But some key elements are already present.

The music and the visual are deeply bound together.
It's evident in the form of the electronic percussion that controls the lightnings on the horizon.
But at a deeper level, working together has resulted in something I was actually looking for: visual and musical ideas are mutually influenced by the mood of each other.

Another thing I love about this project: the two of us have a decent experience in the respective fields. I played music all of my life, and he has been making digital art since.
But this project is a way of learning new tools, for both of us.

And these tools, TouchDesigner and Ableton, also end up having a part in setting the actual mood of what will be the final result.

Enough said, the clip it's just a random moment from yesterday afternoon session. Not particularly emblematic, but I think it can give an idea.
Maybe I would not have tooted it if @mosgaard didn't ask about it some days ago 😅

I made a new controller for the Musical Crystal Cave! This one has very Myst-y vibes and I'm very pleased with how it came out. This is a 100% custom controller that's largely 3D printed (except for all the wood).

The levers use magnetic rotary encoders and connect wirelessly via espnow to a dongle that outputs MIDI CC. I drive the animation of the artwork via TouchDesigner.

CAD was split between Openscad and OnShape.

Week 3 with @Ableton and @TouchDesigner: Effects. I wanted something really drone-y and rumbly, that I could visualize as vibrations. For the visuals I experimented with instancing and shading. I also just can't stop playing with noise—so satisfying.
