Deadly #Colorado, #Kansas pileups, fast-moving Plains #wildfires fueled by #DangerousWinds
#BlowingDust created near-zero visibility on I-25 near Pueblo, killing 4 people, while the same powerful #windstorm fueled fast-moving wildfires and triggered additional crashes across the Plains.
By Emilee Speck, AccuWeather staff writer & Brian Lada, AccuWeather meteorologist
Published Feb 17, 2026"Powerful winds kicking up dust across the Plains contributed to multiple fatal crashes and sparked rapidly spreading wildfires on Tuesday as dry grasses fueled fast-moving flames.
"Heavy winds created dangerous 'brown out' conditions along Interstate 25 near Pueblo, Colorado, on the morning of Feb. 17, with a massive multi-vehicle crash happening amid low to near-zero visibility. The Colorado State Patrol responded around 10:02 a.m. MST to the crash on southbound I-25 at milepost 92, just south of Pueblo Boulevard. Preliminary findings indicate more than 30 vehicles were involved, including six semis.
"Authorities have confirmed four fatalities, and 29 people were transported to hospitals, though the extent of their injuries remains unknown."
[...]
"[W]est of Oakley, #Kansas, another multi-vehicle pileup occurred on I-70 during low visibility caused by blowing dust, underscoring the widespread travel hazards created by the powerful windstorm. Winds in the area were gusting around 60 mph at the time the crash was reported.
"In #Oklahoma, a fast-growing wildfire in the Oklahoma panhandle, east of Beaver, quickly spread into Kansas."

Winter reawakens as the #PolarVortex unlocks a blast of cold air into #NewEngland
The #ArcticAir is coming back with a vengeance, surging south through the second half of January.
By Dave Epstein
Updated January 17, 2026, 7:00 a.m.Excerpt: "For those of you who might think the winter cold is over, think again. We are about to enter very cold territory for an extended time, starting around Tuesday, thanks to the polar vortex again.
The polar jet stream, which is affected by the polar vortex above it, has become quite wavy, allowing Arctic air to infiltrate the United States over the next two weeks."An initial surge of cold air has already been blasting parts of the Central and Southern United States. Florida saw 30-degree weather on Friday, triggering freeze warnings in the area."

Triple #PolarVortex to plunge #CentralUS and #EasternUS into Arctic cold through mid-December
The first cold snap is happening this week.
Kate Murphy, Reporter
Thu, December 4, 2025"Three rounds of cold Arctic air from a shifting polar vortex are expected to plunge much of the central and eastern U.S. into a cold snap in the coming weeks, meteorologists say. The first wave of the triple whammy of winter weather is happening this week.
" 'The week will end with some of the coldest air of the season so far, as a front advances from the Midwest into the Northeast and mid-Atlantic,' said Renee Duff, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.
"Meteorologists forecast two more blasts of frigid temperatures for millions of people over the next two weeks.
" 'A displacement of the polar vortex is allowing Arctic air to seep into the central and eastern U.S.,' Duff explained. 'A second cold outbreak is in the forecast next week, and a third round of frigid air is likely during the middle of the month.'
When will the cold air arrive?
"Brutally cold temperatures hit portions of the Midwest on Thursday morning, while the northern mid-Atlantic and New England will feel the freeze on Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
" 'The outbreak this week will be the first of probably three such rounds with it,' said AccuWeather’s lead long-range meteorologist, Paul Pastelok. 'Another cold blast is likely next week and a third the week after that.'
How cold will it get?
" 'Low temperatures in the negative single digits and teens for the #Midwest and single digits and teens for the northern #MidAtlantic/#NewEngland may challenge several daily record low temperatures,' the NWS said."

#ClimateChange boosted #HurricaneMelissa’s destructive winds and rain, analysis finds
By ISABELLA O’MALLEY
Updated 10:18 AM EST, November 6, 2025"Human-caused climate change boosted the destructive winds and rain unleashed by Hurricane Melissa and increased the temperatures and humidity that fueled the storm, according to an analysis released Thursday.
"Melissa was one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes to make landfall and brought destructive weather to #Jamaica, #Haiti, #DominicanRepublic and #Cuba, causing dozens of deaths across the #Caribbean. Roofs were torn off of homes, hospitals were damaged, roads were blocked by landslides and crop fields were ruined.
"The rapid analysis by World Weather Attribution found that climate change increased Melissa’s maximum wind speeds by 7% and made the rainfall near the center of the storm 16% more intense. The scientists also wrote that the temperature and humidity in which the storm intensified were made six times more likely due to climate change compared to a #PreIndustrial world."

Literally, when it does rain, it pours!
Warming atmosphere fueling heavier U.S. rainfall and rising flood risk, AccuWeather analysis shows
A new AccuWeather study of more than 60 years of rainfall records shows U.S. precipitation totals are flat, but heavy downpours and hourly extremes are increasing, raising the risk of flooding, damage, and economic losses.
By Monica Danielle, Sep 19, 2025
"It’s not raining more across the United States, but when it rains, it’s falling harder, faster and in more extreme bursts. That’s the finding of a new AccuWeather analysis of more than 60 years of weather records, which reveals a striking shift: National rainfall totals remain statistically flat, yet the number of heavy downpours and hours with extreme rainfall have increased sharply.
"These changes are fueling greater flood risk, straining infrastructure and threatening communities nationwide. "

#GrandCanyon, #Utah #wildfires creating "#FireClouds" that can form their own weather systems
August 1, 2025
"Two wildfires burning in the western United States — including one that has become a '#megafire' on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon — are so hot that they're spurring the formation of 'fire clouds' that can create their own #ErraticWeather systems.
"In #Arizona, the wind-whipped #DragonBravoFire that destroyed the #GrandCanyonLodge is 9% contained and has charred more than 164 square miles to become the largest fire now burning in the continental U.S. and one of the top 10 largest in recorded Arizona history. Getting around it would be roughly like driving from New York City to Washington, D.C.
"Another large fire in #MonroeUT, has burned 75 square miles since July 13 and is 11% contained, officials said Thursday. Evacuation orders were issued Wednesday for several towns in the fire's path, and scorched power poles prompted the shutoff of electricity in other nearby communities in south-central #Utah.
"Utah Gov. Spencer Cox declared an emergency Thursday as #wildfires grew around the state and planned to visit Monroe on Friday.
"Towering convection clouds known as #pyrocumulus clouds have been spotted over Arizona's blaze for seven consecutive days, fueling the fire with dry, powerful winds, fire information officer Lisa Jennings said. They form when air over the fire becomes #superheated and rises in a large smoke column. The giant billowing clouds can be seen for hundreds of miles and can resemble an anvil.
"Their more treacherous big brother, a fire-fueled thunderstorm known as the #pyrocumulonimbus cloud, sent rapid winds shooting in all directions this week as a smoke column formed from the Utah fire then collapsed on itself, fire team information officer Jess Clark said.
" 'If they get high enough, they can also create #downdrafts, and that's something we really watch out for because that can quickly spread the fire and can be very dangerous for firefighters who are doing their work on the ground,' Jennings said.
"Multiple fire crews in Utah were forced to retreat Wednesday as the unpredictable climate created by the clouds threatened their safety, officials said. Fire crews in both Utah and Arizona had better control of the blazes, but containment has been slipping as the fires grow rapidly.
"The same type of cloud, which the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has dubbed the 'fire-breathing dragon of clouds,' recently formed a fire tornado that tore through an eastern Utah neighborhood with wind speeds estimated at 122 miles per hour."

Heat indices could hit 120 as sweltering temperatures grip eastern half of US
More than 200 million people brace for sweltering conditions across the country.
By Kenton Gewecke, Kyle Reiman, and Bill HutchinsonJuly 28, 2025, 2:29 PM
"Extreme heat warnings and watches are in effect from the Midwest to the Southeast with heat index temperatures expected between 108 and 116.
"More than 200 million people across from #SouthDakota to #Florida and up the #EastCoast to #Boston are on alert for widespread, dangerous heat on Monday and into the new work week, and parts of the Southeast could experience the brunt of the sweltering conditions.
"On average, nearly 2,000 Americans die from extreme heat each year, according to CDC data going back to 2020.
"The highest temperatures on Monday will be focused in the southeast, from the Carolinas to Florida, where extreme heat indices -- that is, what the temperatures feel like when humidity is factored in -- are forecast to be between 105 and 115 degrees.
"Parts of Mississippi and Louisiana are on alert for heat indices up to 120 degrees.
"#ExtremeHeat is also expected to continue on Monday and Tuesday in the Midwest, where over the weekend temperatures felt between 97 to 111 degrees from Lincoln, Nebraska, up into Minneapolis.
"Extreme heat warnings have been issued for large cities from Iowa to Florida, including New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis, Omaha, Des Moines, Savannah, Raleigh, Charleston and Sioux Falls. These areas could see feels-like temperatures between 110 to 115 degrees.
"The Northeast coast from Philadelphia to Boston, including New York City, is in store for multiple days of dangerous heat. Heat indices in the Northeast are forecast to make it feel like the mid-90s to 104 on Monday.
"In addition to the sweltering conditions, smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to continue to create hazy conditions in New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut. Over the weekend, smoke from those wildfires prompted an air-quality alert. Another plume of smoke could reach the I-95 corridor on Tuesday afternoon.
"Looking ahead to the work week, potentially life-threatening heat and humidity are expected to continue across the eastern half of the country through Wednesday. Major cities including St. Louis, Memphis, Charlotte, Savannah, Tampa and Jackson, Mississippi, are all likely all see actual temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s.
"A prolonged heat wave is forecast for those regions as an abundance of tropical moisture settling in is expected to drive the feels-like temperatures up to between 105 to 115 degrees over multiple consecutive days.
Dangerous heat and humidity through Thursday."Nighttime and early mornings are not expected to provide relief from the sweltering conditions. Overnight and early morning lows are expected to fall only to the 70s or higher.
"Between Monday and Wednesday, large portions of the Southeast are expected to be under an extreme heat risk at a four-out-of-four level, including the cities of Atlanta, Charlotte, and Jacksonville and Tallahassee, Florida.
"On Sunday, #TampaFL, broke an all-time heat record -- reaching 100 degrees for the first time in 130 years of record-keeping.
"Besides the extreme heat, parts of the Midwest, including South Dakota and western Minnesota, are expecting potentially destructive winds of more than 75 mph on Monday evening. A few severe storms are also expected to roll through North Dakota on Monday evening and spread into Minnesota and Iowa on Monday night."

'Unheard-of' Storm Brings Months of Rain to 2 States
Story by Anna Skinner, May 5, 2025
"An 'unheard-of' storm has flooded parts of southern Oklahoma and northern Texas after dumping 14 inches of rain in some cities over seven days.
"Two cities in #Oklahoma and one in #Texas broke their April rainfall records after receiving months' worth of rain during the unusually wet spring storms.
"The record levels come after more than a week of rain brought a deluge to parts of Oklahoma and Texas. Although the heavy precipitation helped remedy drought across the region, it also sparked severe impacts, including rising river waters that have now been flooding for more than a week.
"Weather warnings of dangerous #floodwaters remain in place across the region, with some not expiring until 'further notice.' The floodwaters have endangered livestock, closed roads, and inundated #farmland."

#TropicalStormSara to unleash life-threatening #flooding in #CentralAmerica
Tropical Storm Sara will bring an extreme risk to lives and property in Central America where feet of rain may fall before tracking toward #Florida next week.
By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Nov 14, 2024
"Rain may pour down for days on the northern parts of #Nicaragua and #Honduras before shifting to eastern parts of #Guatemala, #Belize and southeastern #Mexico this weekend.
"A general 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) will fall in this zone, but a large pocket of 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) of rain is forecast from northern Honduras and Nicaragua, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 50 inches (127 cm).
"'This amount of rain will trigger major #FlashFlooding and #mudslides with the potential for catastrophic loss of life and tremendous damage,' AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter warned.
"Some communities could be cut off for days due to washed-out roads and bridges or blocked by debris flows. Demands for rescue and recovery efforts, as well as food and medical supplies, will be great in the wake of the storm in the region.
"Because of Sara's proximity to the #Caribbean for several days, it will likely not unwind fully. As a result, winds, waves and #StormSurge will blast the coast of #Honduras, eastern #Guatemala, #Belize and Mexico's #Yucatan Peninsula. Sporadic #PowerOutages are likely due to #StrongWinds."

During #Brazil’s worst #drought, #wildfires rage and the #AmazonRiver falls to a record low
By FABIANO MAISONNAVE
Updated 2:47 PM EDT, September 10, 2024BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — "Brazil is enduring its worst drought since nationwide measurements began over seven decades ago, with 59% of the country under stress — an area roughly half the size of the U.S.
"Major Amazon basin rivers are registering historic lows, and uncontrolled manmade wildfires have ravaged protected areas and spread smoke over a vast expanse, plummeting air quality.
"'This is the first time that a drought has covered all the way from the North to the country’s Southeast,' Ana Paula Cunha, a researcher at the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters, said in a statement Thursday. 'It is the most intense and widespread drought in history.'
"Smoke on Monday afternoon caused #SaoPaulo, a metropolitan area of 21 million people, to breathe the second most #PollutedAir in the world after #LahorePakistan, according to data gathered by #IQAir, a Swiss air technology company.
"About 1,100 kilometers (683 miles) to the north, a wildfire is sweeping through #ChapadaDosVeadeiros National Park, one of Brazil’s most famous tourism sites.
"'This year, the dry season started much earlier than in previous years, whereas the rain season was intense yet short,' Nayara Stacheski, head of the park, told The Associated Press. 'The wind is strong, the air humidity is very low and it’s extremely hot. All this worsens the wildfire.'"
