Tha a' bhliadhna a' tionndadh — the year is turning.
Five days to solstice. The magnolias are browning at the edges and dropping their saucer petals on the red clay; the fireflies have started their slow Morse in the wet dark. The old wheel doing what no congress can repeal.

Winter reawakens as the #PolarVortex unlocks a blast of cold air into #NewEngland
The #ArcticAir is coming back with a vengeance, surging south through the second half of January.
By Dave Epstein
Updated January 17, 2026, 7:00 a.m.Excerpt: "For those of you who might think the winter cold is over, think again. We are about to enter very cold territory for an extended time, starting around Tuesday, thanks to the polar vortex again.
The polar jet stream, which is affected by the polar vortex above it, has become quite wavy, allowing Arctic air to infiltrate the United States over the next two weeks."An initial surge of cold air has already been blasting parts of the Central and Southern United States. Florida saw 30-degree weather on Friday, triggering freeze warnings in the area."

What a great time to dismantle #FEMA, eh?

It's impossible to mention sweet tea without talking about the Southern United States. But how did one sugared drink become synonymous with an entire regional identity? For one, it’s hot down there. “Do not underestimate the importance of a cooling beverage in the South,” says Robert F. Moss, restaurant critic and a contributing editor to Southern Living. @foodandwine has more on the origins of sweet tea and its presence in Southern culture. https://flip.it/q2YufH

CW: Kudzu isn't "the vine that ate the South" for the reasons you think! (expand for more info)
People think kudzu is an invasive plant that takes over the second it touches the ground, but like most invasive plants, the story is actually very different.
Kudzu took over because it was planted at scale by farmers and encouraged by the US federal gov't. It was recommended and used as cattle fodder and erosion control for decades. If you're driving in the South and see a wooded area with kudzu vines smothering it, you are likely looking at either an abandoned agricultural field or abandoned pasture.
Kudzu actually spreads kinda slowly. The seeds have almost non-existent germination rates, and the runners don't root that well. Kudzu is spreading, yes, but it's nothing compared to other invasive plants, and it covers only a fraction of the land area that invasives like privet and roses cover.
