  1. Saharan dust storms can drift north toward Europe, and colored rain sometimes follows when raindrops fall through dust plumes beneath the clouds. From brown and yellow to rare red “blood rain,” the colors come from iron oxide. 🌩️🌧️ #EarthScience #DustStorms #NASA science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-o

  2. Wow... massive dust storms from Sudan (photo from Egypt). Wonder if they are visible on satellite photos.

  3. #HeatDome to broil #WesternUS ahead of North American #monsoon

A new heat dome is building in the United States this week. This time it will focus on the West first, then shift toward the Midwest. Storms associated with the #NorthAmericanMonsoon will follow the heat in the West.

By Alex Sosnowski, Jul 7, 2026

Excerpt: "As the heat wave crests over the interior West, an annual phenomenon will take place. Moisture will begin to trickle in from Mexico at first, then pick up more steam later this week to next week. A surge in humidity levels, along with a flip of the breeze from the west to the south, is known as the North American monsoon.

" 'There should be a slow propagation of thunderstorm activity from south to north over the interior West that should start with spotty activity at first then become somewhat more widespread by next week,' Pastelok said.

" 'Helping that activity will be an eastward shift of the high-pressure heat dome,' AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said. 'The circulation around the high will help to pump moisture in more freely over much of the West beginning this weekend and more so next week.'

"Many of the early storms over the Southwest may bring little or no rain but gusty #winds and #lightning strikes. The gusty winds can kick up considerable amounts of #dust, creating large #DustStorms or #haboobs. Lightning strikes with no rain can set off scores of new #wildfires, while gusty winds around the storms can fan the new fires and existing large blazes.

"The nature of the heat dome will trap smoke in the region, which can reduce the visibility, create a hazy or milky-looking sky and create #AirQuality dangers for some individuals. "

  6. A U.S. flag measuring nearly two acres was trucked to Spaceport America and unfurled for cleaning. The effort required a crane and dozens of volunteers.

Then a sand storm welcomed them to New Mexico.

  8. Deadly #Colorado, #Kansas pileups, fast-moving Plains #wildfires fueled by #DangerousWinds

#BlowingDust created near-zero visibility on I-25 near Pueblo, killing 4 people, while the same powerful #windstorm fueled fast-moving wildfires and triggered additional crashes across the Plains.

By Emilee Speck, AccuWeather staff writer & Brian Lada, AccuWeather meteorologist
    Published Feb 17, 2026

"Powerful winds kicking up dust across the Plains contributed to multiple fatal crashes and sparked rapidly spreading wildfires on Tuesday as dry grasses fueled fast-moving flames.

"Heavy winds created dangerous 'brown out' conditions along Interstate 25 near Pueblo, Colorado, on the morning of Feb. 17, with a massive multi-vehicle crash happening amid low to near-zero visibility. The Colorado State Patrol responded around 10:02 a.m. MST to the crash on southbound I-25 at milepost 92, just south of Pueblo Boulevard. Preliminary findings indicate more than 30 vehicles were involved, including six semis.

"Authorities have confirmed four fatalities, and 29 people were transported to hospitals, though the extent of their injuries remains unknown."

    [...]

"[W]est of Oakley, #Kansas, another multi-vehicle pileup occurred on I-70 during low visibility caused by blowing dust, underscoring the widespread travel hazards created by the powerful windstorm. Winds in the area were gusting around 60 mph at the time the crash was reported.

"In #Oklahoma, a fast-growing wildfire in the Oklahoma panhandle, east of Beaver, quickly spread into Kansas."

  9. Haboob (Storm 🌪️)

A haboob is an intense dust storm generated by strong winds from weather fronts or the downdrafts of thunderstorms. These storms occur in arid and semi-arid regions worldwide, including the Middle East, North Africa, Australia, and North America, and have also been observed on Mars and Titan. A haboob typically forms when cold air from a thunderstorm rushes downward, cau...

  10. Surviving the Storm: How The Martian Could Foreshadow Interstellar’s Dust-Choked Earth

When we watch The Martian (2015), it’s easy to see Mark Watney’s story as a thrilling tale of survival on a distant planet. He battles isolation, resource scarcity, and, most pressingly, Mars’ massive dust storms. Meanwhile, Interstellar (2014) portrays a dying Earth, ravaged by relentless dust storms and agricultural collapse. On the surface, the films seem unrelated — different worlds, different crises, different stakes. But a fascinating fan theory suggests that the Mars mission in […]

on my trek into the kitchen for a cuppa this mornin’ heard a woman on abc brekky tele talking about drought in Peterborough SA and the difficulties of feeding stock… i am not without sympathy for the livestock, or even the lady wot was on the tele… but these dust storms are not unusual - the photo below from nbc america was 2020

at the risk of sounding like a cracked record… SA is the driest state in the driest inhabited continent… and in 1860s an SA government surveyor named goyder said something like <yeah, nah, not enough reliable rainfall> but did they listen? SA is now littered with ghost towns like the hubristically named <farina>

i mean, that great berk burke expired in SA in 1861 for want of water (and okay, also because instead of letting the Indigenous people help him he took a shot at one). if we don’t learn the lessons of history, and all that.

we’ve destroyed australia’s most significant river system, then dicked about for years pretending we want to fix it. the morrison fires of 2020 were NOT just ✌🏻more of the same✌🏻

there are more extreme instances of flout and drudding rains than in the past… when my mother sat on her father’s shoulders to watch victoria burn in 1939, people were fighting the fires with wet sacks, shovels and rakes, and many people had little water at home except what was in a rainwater tank. the state was in a deep economic depression and no one had trucks or motorised vehicles.
(i think at that stage my mother had never even had a ride in a motor car. One of my uncles bought pnematic tyres for his horse drawn buggy in the 1950s and people laughed at him.)

the more things change etc — technology will not save us from ourselves

is this where we use the hashtag #MakeAustraliaGreatAgain?
