  6. Through this arrangement the customary link between the natural resource and its user was interrupted - abruptly disowning the traditional ecological knowledge of this ancient people. The pastures, not managed and protected anymore by the tribes, started to be over-grazed by free-ranging pastoralists.

A major role in this unfolding disaster was played by affluent urban investors who threw thousands of livestock into the steppe turning the grazing into a large-scale, totally unsustainable, industrial practice.

  8. Spain worries over 'lifeless land' amid creeping desertification

"#Spain is not going to be a #desert with dunes like in the Sahara, that's morphologically impossible," explains del Barrio, a researcher at #EEZA, the experimental center for research into arid zones.
But #desertification, which is characterized by a severe "#degradation of the #soil" causing it to lose its productive capacity, "is worrying", he says.

  9. Estimated 2 billion tons of #sand and #dust are entering the atmosphere per year: ‘We are in a vicious circle’

Story by Jeremiah Budin, December 11, 2023

"#Pollution and human activity have ripple effects everywhere that plants grow, and one of those effects is that there is less land for plants to grow than ever before.

"According to the United Nations, the world is losing around 386,000 square miles (by some estimates, more than Texas and New Mexico combined) of productive land per year to sand and #DustStorms — the result of #HumanActivity, as Reuters reports.

    What is happening?

"The United Nations Convention to Combat #Desertification (#UNCCD) recently issued a report that called attention to the issue of land loss due to #SandStorms, which have hit large areas of #Africa and #Asia. According to the report, at least 25% of the storms could be attributed to human activity, such as #overmining and #overgrazing.

    Why is this concerning?

"According to the UNCCD report, 'with impacts far beyond the source regions, an estimated 2 billion tons of sand and dust now enters the atmosphere every year, an amount equal in weight to 350 Great Pyramids of Giza.' And while sand storms are common in many regions, this new frequency and intensity are not.

“'We are in a vicious circle, where #LandDegradation is fueling #ClimateChange and climate change is exacerbating land loss in the world,' Ibrahim Thiaw, UNCCD executive secretary, told Reuters.

"Thiaw went on to explain that as the sand storms continue to make an increasing amount of land unfarmable, it affects people’s ability to get food in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries.

“'It goes well beyond individuals,' he said. 'It is affecting the entire community.'

What can be done about it?

"The UNCCD had several recommendations for steps that could be taken to prevent further land loss. For one, it said that funding needs to be increased to tackle the problem, which has drawn less attention so far than other issues caused by human-driven pollution.

"Also, new incentives are needed for the private sector to take responsibility for the land that it destroys.

"As Thiaw told Reuters, #China has been successful at combating desertification and controlling dust, by employing a #LandManagement, #restoration, and #reforestation program."

Needless to say, as we have seen from disaster reports from #Greece and #Italy, for instance, in recent years, the rate of top-soil #Erosion in the areas hit by such extreme-weather events, is bound to increase exponentially initially. It would be, I think will be, wonderful when solar panels at height are used at desert borders shrinking deserts, adding vegetation with partial shade, all while producing vast amounts of energy.

  16. China's 3,046-Kilometer "Great Green Wall" Has Transformed Its Largest Desert Into A Carbon Sink

#China has a new #GreatWall but this one isn't built of stone and mortar to repel marauding invaders from the north. Instead, the “Great Green Wall” is a vast belt of #trees and #shrubs lining the bottom of its northern deserts, designed to halt the steady creep of #desertification. New research suggests this massive megaproject is already functioning as a vital #CarbonSink, helping to stabilize the local #environment.

Located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the #TaklamakanDesert is one of the driest places on Earth and the largest #desert in the country. It’s sometimes called the “Sea of Death” and “The Place of No Return” because of its desolate landscape, defined by towering dunes and a scarcity of #wildlife

  20. TGV Lyon–Bordeaux via Paris : « La nouvelle aberration »

  22. @wauz @econetwork "land used for producing coffee is not used for food" - this is only true in a monoculture, where you allow only one crop to grow in a given patch of land. The monoculture is the main part of what makes it colonial. European colonists had (and still have) an industrial mentality and were used to a forgiving, temperate climate where you can sometimes get away with a monoculture for decades, so they started monocultures everywhere they went. In most colonized areas, this displaced the more sustainable polyculture practices, often destroying fertility very quickly. This is still going on (for example in the huge oil palm plantations) and is the main cause of #desertification.

In polycultures, the cultivated patch of land can be designed to be self-sustaining in the same way as a natural ecosystem. That generally includes returning surplus to the land, for example by composting the cascara. In that sense, eating what you grow is not the only way to use the land sustainably.

Long story short, coffee is fine if you mix it with other crops. As you can read elsewhere in this thread, this is exactly what EYN is doing.

  24. #Trump is cutting the #environmental subsidies for #farmers to reduce the potential of #overgrazing. #Deforestation and overgrazing have been THE ultimate causes of #SoilErosion and #desertification around the world in the past 3000 to 7000 years, including the formation of giant #deserts in the #Sahara and the #MiddleEast. The #WestCoast is already turning into a giant #desert. Will it happen to Southern States? #Mississippi

  25. #SoilErosion causes soil degradation and #desertification. What causes soil erosion is thus a cause of desertification and hence climate change locally and and even globally.

Is soil erosion natural or man-made? A study in the Holocene soil erosion in Greece suggests that human deforestation and agriculture, not nature, led to soil erosion and hence #ClimateChange in Greece during the period. People claiming CO2 emission being THE cause of climate change are misled.
