On Tuesday morning's ride we got stuck in early rush hour commercial traffic.
The shepherd and owner of the flock followed us in a brand new car. As the sheep didn't let us pass and just ran further up the road, he plowed ahead with the car, they let him through, we could pass in his wake.

This morning's road cycling involved a good amount of climbing and large quantities of wind - but since I had company and we took it easy, I enjoyed every bit. What am I saying here? ...I nearly always enjoy the climbing!

Tomorrow (Fri 2026-05-15) there will be a kind of charity-ride here on Naxos. At 10:00 from the harbour in town cycling up to Apeiranthos.
My legs are a bit tired, I was planning a rest day, but I'll go. I'm really curious who will show up and take part. If I understand the announcement correctly, it will be a very leisurely pace. Some friends will be there too.

The smell of sea, sunscreen, and sweat … I'm out cycling, currently stopped at the beach in Apollona. This is the most northern village on Naxos. I like it, because the cafés on the beach have this old 80s summer vacation feeling to them. Life could be worse.

Back in 2017 I had started to make a site / blog about #cycling on #Naxos. I wrote some great articles, but soon lost motivation and stopped.
Today I cycled with someone who had found that site (and found it useful) before meeting me (first online, then IRL).
It kinda makes me consider re-starting that little side-project. No idea if I could actually hold the motivation longer on a second try.

This is not the sunset: on April 1st 2026 we had a huge storm with massive quantities of dust from North Africa. This happens from time to time in #Greece, but I've never seen it so intense, so brutal. At 16:30 it was basically night. I took this pic at 17:45. Later it started to pour down rain, covering everything in red sludge.

Ich war grad in Moutsouna (einem Dorf/Hafen auf der abgelegenen Ostseite der Insel). Wie am Zickzack der Strasse zu sehen ist, geht die Steigung* auf dem Rückweg kräftig in die Beine. Aber dafür sind die Berge ja da.
* ca. 11km, 580 Höhenmeter. Am Anfang fühlte ich mich gut, aber dann hatte der Berg auch ein Wort dazu zu sagen.

Blutroter Himmel über Kreta sorgt für spektakuläre Szenen.
Ein ungewöhnliches Naturschauspiel sorgt derzeit auf Kreta für Aufsehen: Der Himmel erscheint in einem intensiven Rotton, als läge ein Filter über der gesamten Insel. Verantwortlich dafür ist feiner Saharastaub, der durch starke Winde aus Nordafrika bis ins Mittelmeer getragen wurde.

Hier ist das Loch im Detail. Gut zu sehen auch wieviel Sand auf die Strasse geworfen wird (bei hohen Wellen durch Südwind) … soweit ich gehört habe, diskutiert die Gemeinde noch, was da zu tun ist. Bevor die Touristensaison anfängt, sollte besser was passieren, da muss der Bus durch.

The "north coast road" (as I personally call it) offers great views over the sea. When planning to cycle on it, keep in mind to look out for wind direction. And don't forget that there is a lot of climbing despite it being nominally on the coast.

Aperathou (Apeiranthos) in the distance. This village was according to the myth (and some historians theories) founded up high in the mountains so pirates couldn't see or reach it. (Not cute movie pirates.)

Today I went to the café Bossa in #Naxos town, at lunchtime when it got a bit quieter. Right when I left to cycle to the shop, it started to rain. But rain has a different meaning on the island: it's a positive thing, we need it very much. Even the ever-complaining naxians unite in rain-positivity. Seeing me on the bike, the waitor didn't say: "Too bad it will be raining", he said: "Oh yes, it will rain!"

One of the downsides of living in a small village is that I need to cycle to some bigger village to sit in a nice café. I especially like the café Μπέρδεμα (Berdema, literally confusion or mess) in the mountain village of Aperathou aka Apeiranthos. It has good music, a decent hot chocolate, and a great view both over the mountains and part of the village. And it's open through the off-season and winter.

#GutenMorgen #GoodMorning aus dem regnerischen #Naxos. Der (diesen Winter etwas regelmässigere) Regen tut der Insel gut, die ganze #Insel ist grün -- ganz anders als es unsere Sommerbesucher kennen. Unsere Wasserspeicher sind allerdings noch bei weitem nicht voll.
Ich werde ein paar Stunden investieren, um die #SQLAlchemy -Dokumentation zu lesen, wenigstens kann ich dabei zwischendurch durchs Fenster auf die grün-graue Landschaft schauen. Nachmittags will ich dann wieder etwas zeichnen.

In Moutsouna wurde früher Schmirgel verladen. Verrostete Kräne und eine Transport-Seilbahn sind noch da. Heute gibt es ein paar Fischer und im Sommer Tavernen. Sonst ist es hier sehr ruhig.
Wer den Anstieg (11km) auf dem Rückweg schafft (und vielleicht sogar liebt) für die ist Moutsouna ein schönes Ziel für eine #Radtour.

On our little airport there are no skygates or busses to the planes. Passengers walk to the plane and go up the little stair built into the door. The plane has 35 seats, about as much as a bus. Travelling still feels a little bit fascinating.
