"A Sierra Memory" from August 2012 for #MountainMonday and #MonochromeMonday
Barney Lake with a view north into the Mammoth Lakes Basin (Mammoth Mountain can be seen in the distance). The other two small bodies of water, more to the right, are Red Lake and Skelton Lake. I made this photo near Duck Pass, on a nice hike up towards Duck Lake. Clouds and Thunderstorms, a feature of the north-American monsoon weather pattern in summer, occurred regularly in the afternoon during our one-week stay.

Yosemite might be overrun sometimes, but it's always worth a visit.

Some snaps from this week's "Arista del Campanitas" scramble.
Feeling inspired, I'm drafting a blog titled "Treading the Fine Line Between Scrambling and Rock Climbing" — exploring that gloriously confusing grey zone where our discipline labels overlap.
First image traces the approximate route; the rest capture the kind of scenery that makes you forget your legs are burning.

What a day yesterday. Lasting memories of that one for sure. Las Campanitas ridge to Veleta. A complex, dramatic route done without fuss or drama. Here's one with Linda at the summit of Salón 3325m with other members of our group scrambling up the right hand ridge

This year seems to be a rare "population surge" year for the California tortoiseshell butterfly. We saw *hundreds* of them on our hike in Carson Valley.
They would come flying through the woods in a straight line, like they were all on the way to somewhere in a hurry. I thought maybe they were migratory, but no- it turns out this is just something that particular butterfly does once every 5-10 years or so for reasons unknown. 🤯🦋

“[The author has] already discussed ancient water management systems, such as the qanats in Persia and other Eastern countries. In Europe, there are the acequias of the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia, Spain.
The hand-dug channels date back over 1,000 years to the Moorish era. Networks of canals, aqueducts and cisterns were engineered to capture and transport snowmelt, turning this natural resource into a sustainable water supply for agriculture. The high-altitude ditches had openings, allowing water to infiltrate into fractures and faults, replenishing the aquifer, and to irrigate the lower levels of the slopes.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗮𝘀?
✅ Gravity-fed irrigation that supported terraced farms and local biodiversity.
✅ Designed to distribute water slowly and equitably, even during dry summers.
✅ Stretching over thousands of kilometres, these systems fell into disuse in the 1980s but are now part of restoration efforts led by the MEMOLA Project (Universidad de Granada).
With climate change and more intense droughts, the Acequias could provide an ancient solution to the modern-day water crisis…”

Another epic road trip comes to an end. This one was to the Sierra Nevada, “the other side”. I usually go to the Alpujarra on the south side; this time I went to Güéjar Sierra on the north side. Different, but just as beautiful. The photo is a view from the camp site.
Now I have a lot of film to develop and process. I will be busy!

High level hike to the lakes at Lagunillas de la Virgen and Misterioso yesterday. The latter is well named as it cannot be seen from 30m away. Still some substantial snow banks that will probably remain throughout the summer. Good to be back at 3000m

Longest Day #RoadTrip...
Even though I was nominally done with my long day it wasn't over yet. The temps went down to freezing and my hammock gear was not warm enough for sleeping exposed on a cot. I got up about 2am and left the pit. I drove to the first scenic pullout on the road north and slept another few hours snug in my car. This was my view when I awoke…

At 3300 metres above sea level, the Pico de Veleta in southern Spain is home to Europe’s highest road.
Running from the city of Granada to the Sierra Nevada Ski Station, the road is very popular among amateur cyclists and professional cyclists who use it to train.
