My college life in 1973: Living in an eight by twenty-four camper in the Hillside Trailer Park outside State College, and driving a large, over-powered Dodge Coronet. No one gets nostalgic about steering rear-wheel-drive cars in the snow. #olddays #oldendays #twentiethcentury #blizzard #snow #snowstorm #snowstorms #statecollege #pennstate #dodge #plymouth #hillsidetrailerpark #trailerpark #trailerparks #affordablehousing #nomoreaffordablehousing #affordablehousinginstatecollege

#Russia’s Extreme Winter #Storms Are a #Climate Wake-Up Call the #Kremlin Is Ignoring
The chaos caused by recent extreme #snowstorms across Russia has laid bare the #hypocrisy of President Vladimir #Putin’s regime when it comes to protecting its own people. The invasion of #Ukraine was justified as a defense against imaginary threats posed by Ukraine and the West. In contrast, the real dangers posed by #climatechange to the Russian people are largely ignored.

Woke up to about 2 inches of #snow this morning. Not bad considering the forecasters were predicting 4-5 inches overnight. #SnowStorms

Massive #snowstorm to bury areas from #OklahomaCity to #NewYorkCity, #Boston
In what is likely to be the biggest winter storms in years for such a broad area of the U.S., heavy snow is forecast from the eastern slopes of the Rockies to the coastal Northeast. Travel shutdowns are anticipated.
By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Jan 22, 2026
"Enough snow to shovel and plow is forecast to spread from New Mexico and Colorado on Friday to Massachusetts and Maine by Sunday, impacting over 200 million people. It could be the biggest snowstorm in years with a large area having the potential to receive 6 to 12 inches of snow, with accumulations reaching 24-30 inches in the hardest-hit areas.
" 'It is rare that storms combine this much snow, ice and bitter cold over such a large area — a widespread travel-halting winter storm will stall daily life for days in large portions of the central and eastern U.S.,' AccuWeather Senior Vice President Evan Myers said."

Here's a map summary page for those of you who are in the potential path of #Winter #Storm #Fern
Winter #IceStorms aren't new to us in the north, and our infrastructure here is geared to tolerate them, but they can be far worse than massive #SnowStorms to all of us, regardless of our geographical location.
Folks die from the 'fallout' of the storm, not just the storm itself.

#Scientists discover changes to the #polarvortex that are plunging parts of #US into deep freeze
When the polar vortex stretches, #NorthAmerica feels the chill. New research reveals some of the stratospheric patterns controlling these cold snaps
"Overwhelmingly, extreme cold and severe #winter #weather, heavy #snowstorms and deep #snow, are associated with these stretched events," co-author Judah Cohen, director of seasonal #forecasting at Atmospheric and Envir. Research

🎉Welcome to the #DEWLine "Museum," where the only thing colder than the -50°F weather is the lack of actual artifacts. 😂 Come for the memories, stay for the thrilling videos of #snowstorms and Larry Wilson links. Because who needs tangible history when you can have a "virtual" experience? 🤦♂️📸

The ongoing travesty of lack of political leadership in Texas. The pattern of inaction is clear - Texas fails to take preventative actions to prepare for disasters. Recent low-lights:
1) 2008, Hurricane Ike hammered the Texas coastline > 100 deaths, ~ 25B in damages. No action on creating a surge barrier in Galveston Bay.
2) 2021, massive winter storm crashed the state’s eccentric power grid leaving ~5M people without heat and more than 200 dead. 4 years later, the state’s electric grid operator, Ercot, is warning another similar storm has an 80% likelihood of rolling blackouts.
3) 2025, Texas hill county floods, > 120 deaths and $Billions in damages. Texas Senate lawmakers killed a statewide initiative to improve emergency alerts with a network of outdoor sirens, a few months prior to the floods in 2025, via bill HB13.

Looks like NH is forecasted to get a few rounds of snow in the next week or so. At least we have something to go with all the cold weather!
Seasons like this also make me grateful that I work from home.

Hoping that’s the last time I have to change plans, quickly pack up a car and outrun a winter storm. Cut short vacation and came home last night through dense fog to beat the snow. While storm timing has been pushed back, still the right choice.
Last time it was with a moving truck, overnight, to beat highway closures for a storm that never materialized. I was five years younger then.
Picture of some beautiful winter.

⚡️ Snow storms and floods hit Ukraine and Russia, causing power outages affecting around two million people. Hurricane winds led to coastal damage in Sochi. Moldova, Georgia, and Bulgaria also experienced the impacts of the storm. #Ukraine #Russia #SnowStorms #Floods #PowerOutages #CoastalDamage https://www.riskmap.com/incidents/1962344/articles/199507350/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

Winter storms put the US power grid to the test. It failed.
America’s aging energy infrastructure and reliance on fossil fuels pushed local power grids to the brink.
