Almost 300 millimetres of rain on #VancouverIsland in three-day drenching

VANCOUVER - "A number of communities in British Columbia’s south coast have received more than 100 millimetres of rain in the atmospheric river event over the last three days, with one station reporting nearly 300 millimetres.
#EnvironmentCanada says the #KennedyLake Forestry Station on Vancouver Island received a whopping 286 millimetres from Saturday to Monday.
"On the mainland, #PortMellon reported 204 millimetres.
"The weather agency says at least 20 weather stations in the region reported rain of more than 100 millimetres, including 168 millimetres in #Ucluelet.
"Other parts of Metro #Vancouver and the Lower Mainland were also drenched, with #Squamish reporting 132 millimetres.
"The #HeavyRain triggered several evacuation orders and alerts in areas including Chemainus Bridge and the Nanaimo Regional District on Vancouver Island, with one evacuation order for a single property near #ParksvilleBC.
"Much of B.C.‘s south coast and Vancouver Island remain under a flood watch, with a flood warning sill in effect for the Englishman River near Parksville.

heading out to #ucluelet this evening and the L2 charger at work was out of order so a quick top up at the BCH L3 charger is in order. Ill bring it up to as close to 80% as I have time for just to be safe. I may not have needed to charge at all but Mostly I just didn't want to have to charge out there :)

A lot of people are going to say things like: “that's it, it was never really viable anyway. we should just have highways and walking paths”.
But not only is the statement completely false, that's the attitude that got us here. That's the attitude that has brought us climate change. And worst of all, that's the defeatist and nihilistic attitude that will lead to the burning of not just more forest, but whole communities, and eventually, the likely collapse of our civilization.
After the 2021 November floods there was never a question about whether the government would spend (never accounted for!) billions on repairing the highways immediately.
The CN and CP Railways also rebuilt theirs that were heavily damaged, and did it a lot faster, because railways are a lot easier to build, and rebuild, than 4 lane, or 2 lane highways.
During the 2023 wildfire on the other side of Cameron Lake, the railway sat unused while the highway was closed for weeks, leading to massive economic losses for #PortAlberni #tofino and #Ucluelet and all the Nuchanulth Territories and huge social disconnection.
So rebuild it? Absolutely!
Electrify it? Darn right!
Run Freight and Passenger on it again for the benefit of all Islanders!? OF COURSE! It should have never been allowed to stop its 100 years of service to us in the first place!
