Though undoubtedly wooded for centuries, many trees there today are not ancient. From early C19th to 1880s, area was heavily mined for tin and copper, with wood for various purposes in great demand. End of mining meant regrowth of trees amongst lumps and bumps and derelict buildings. Yet it's the kind of moist sheltered habitat that creates temperate rainforest, full of almost luminous moss at this time of year.

More than 2,500 native trees have been planted in Devon this winter - the first steps towards restoring a temperate rainforest that once covered large swathes of the west coast of Britain.
I'm currently reading Guy Shrubsole's wonderful book, 'The Lost Rainforests of Britain', so I'm thrilled to learn that progress is being made restoring this ancient and very special habitat.

This past weekend we took our first trip to the Olympic Peninsula in almost 8 years of living in Seattle. Over a year ago my sister spotted an opening for the 10-person suite at the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort, and she and her family, my parents, and we all joined in the reservation (even though it seemed far in the future).
The official signWe took the northern route, taking the Edmonds-Kingston ferry, crossing the Hood Canal (over the third longest floating bridge in the world, after two on Lake Washington), and stopping for groceries in Port Angeles for the meals we’d be cooking together.
We wound along US 101, one of the few odd numbered routes that in this section is signed E-W. We stopped for quick views of Lake Crescent.
Contemplating Lake CrescentAs we turned into the park proper, and used our kid’s 4th grade entrance pass, we lost cell signal.
After getting settled, we enjoyed the hot spring pools at the resort. Definitely sulfurous!
Sol Duc Falls
The next day our first hike took us to Sol Duc Falls. Everything was so amazingly green! I took some Spatial Video for fun but of course I have no device to view it on!
It was about a mile out and back to the falls, and more up and down than described. A bit muddy but really beautiful temperate rainforest!
Much of the rest of the day and the next was occupied with reading, games, cooking, and family conversation.
Ancient Groves
On our third day we drove back up the entrance road a bit to see the Ancient Groves, a short loop trail through old growth forest that was so good we did it twice!
Salmon Cascades
Finally a bit further down the road we did another waterfall overlook along the Sol Duc River, the Salmon Cascades. It was not salmon season but still a pretty spot.

After four days away we were ready to get home to our much more comfortable beds, our little dog who had been staying at Oma’s… and internet.
The hikes were amazingly beautiful and fairly low key. The weather was occasionally damp but mostly quite pleasant. The resort itself was a little disappointing, especially in terms of cleanliness. We didn’t expect fancy or anything but we did expect them to vacuum and clean kitchen surfaces between guests!
Overall a trip outside our usual comfort zone to a beautiful place. I’d definitely recommend Olympic National Park but we probably won’t go to that exact location again. Maybe next time we’ll try Hoh Rainforest on the western side?

Looks like it will be $800 Canadian or so ($CDN400 for the 100W solar panel, another $400 for the battery that the solar panel will charge which is not a MUST but is better given Vancouver's lack of sun :-) #TemperateRainForest). I figure the price will go down and the wattage will go up over time!
