It's 21ºC in here, which seems like it should be warm enough, but it's also 78% humidity, which means I'm basically in a cold bath. I feel sweaty AND too cold. Gross.

Grenofen Wood, Lower Walkham Valley, West #Devon
Though undoubtedly wooded for centuries, many trees there today are not ancient. From early C19th to 1880s, area was heavily mined for tin and copper, with wood for various purposes in great demand. End of mining meant regrowth of trees amongst lumps and bumps and derelict buildings. Yet it's the kind of moist sheltered habitat that creates temperate rainforest, full of almost luminous moss at this time of year.

More than 2,500 native trees have been planted in Devon this winter - the first steps towards restoring a temperate rainforest that once covered large swathes of the west coast of Britain.
I'm currently reading Guy Shrubsole's wonderful book, 'The Lost Rainforests of Britain', so I'm thrilled to learn that progress is being made restoring this ancient and very special habitat.

there have been a lot of #storms this #autumn & #winter, there were some trees down in Lustleigh cleve and Bovey woods, but not so many, considering.
there were loads of twigs & branches down, with oodles of colonies to #lichenSubscribe , although i doubt the many fallen will survive as well as the ones that survived and have stayed aloft in the #temperateRainforest that we're so blessed with around #Dartmoor

there are wild pine martens in the temperate woodlands of Dartmoor (southern Britain).
it has been ~150 years since this has been the case

Looks like it will be $800 Canadian or so ($CDN400 for the 100W solar panel, another $400 for the battery that the solar panel will charge which is not a MUST but is better given Vancouver's lack of sun :-) #TemperateRainForest). I figure the price will go down and the wattage will go up over time!

Super humid the last few days. For almost all of the summer our house has stayed within the 40-60% relative humidity ‘safe zone’. In these conditions (moderately warm and very wet) however, no matter how well you ventilate, it becomes difficult to stay below 60% RH. 22° and 55% relative humidity feels very comfortable to me, 65% starts to feel uncomfortable, and starts to stray out of the safe zone.
