  1. In The Black Cat (1981) Lucio Fulci takes Poe's story as a starting point and then builds a new story. Two young lovers have vanished. A crazy professor (played by Patrick Magee!) talks to the dead. He has a psychic link to his cat. Great movie.

  6. Monster of the Opera (1964) seems like a typical "young lady in semi-transparent nightie running in terror" gothic horror film but turns out to be much odder. It's a vampire in a haunted theatre film. Or maybe it isn't. Bizarre but fascinating.

  11. Riccardo Freda's The Horrible Dr Hichcock (1962) is overcooked overdone overblown outrageous. A mad scientist with a thing for dead girls. Madness and very unhealthy sexual obsessions. Barbara Steele is excellent. Shades of Hitchcock's Rebecca.

  16. Castle of the Creeping Flesh (1968) is an enjoyable German eurohorror film falling into the gothic horror in a contemporary setting sub-genre, with added decadence and lots of weirdness. It's also sleazy and includes a guy-in-a-bear-suit.

  17. Filippo Walter Ratti’s Crazy Desires of a Murderer (1977) teases you as to whether it's going to be gothic horror or giallo. It has family secrets, a gothic castle, some creepiness, a dash of gore and a nice atmosphere of decadence. Enjoyable.

  18. I'm very fond of Jean Rollin’s late films like Dracula's Fiancee (2002). They have a magical vibe, reminiscent of magic realism with no attempt to explain the magical elements. Once again Rollin creates a whole new mythology. Mesmerising stuff.

  19. Pupi Avati's The House with Laughing Windows (1976) concerns a series of murders linked somehow to a frightening fresco painted by a mad artist. I wasn’t totally sold on this film but I did like the slightly off-kilter stylistic approach.

  20. Aenigma (1987), a fine late Lucio Fulci film (I do like late Fulci). Seriously surreal and twisted. Unsettling and perplexing but in a way that is original and distinctive. It takes place in a nightmare world in which reality plays little part.

  21. Sergio Martino's The Island of the Fishmen (1979). Prison ship survivors are marooned on an island and they're up against monsters, voodoo and mad people. It's a glorious romp done with style and energy and a slight steampunk vibe. Great fun.

  22. Among his standout works: the hugely influential, disturbing Euro-horror landmark Les Yeux Sans Visage (#EyesWithoutAFace, 1960), Pleins feux sur l'assassin (Spotlight on a Murderer, 1961) and Nuits Rouges (Shadowman, 1974).

  24. The Blancheville Monster (Alberto De Martino, 1963) is slightly diminished by an overloaded, slightly convoluted, cliché laden story arc. However, solid art direction and striking, well chosen locations—around Monastery of Santa Maria La Real de Valdeiglesias in Spain—elevate proceedings somewhat in this Poe inspired Gothic. It does, eventually, find its rhythm for a solid enough final third. #FilmMastodon #Eurohorror #Film

  25. The Garden of Torment, a 1976 French film based on Octave Mirbeau’s 1899 novel.

Set in China in the 1920s, the warlord era.

Erotic, arty, provocative, disturbing and convincingly decadent. The main female character is both evil and weirdly sympathetic.

There’s definitely a strong de Sade influence here.

    Very highly recommended.

  26. The Nude Vampire (1970), second of Jean Rollin's vampire films.

You might expect a straightforward erotic horror movie. If so you’re going to become very disoriented very quickly. Rollin was a surrealist. I don’t mean he just used surrealist images and techniques to add atmosphere. This movie is surrealism all the way through.

    Great movie.

  27. Imagine my surprise when I started up Jess Franco’s NIGHT OF THE SKULL (1974) and discovered it was another adaptation of THE CAT AND THE CANARY. (The credits also nonsensically reference Poe, and attribute the script to a collaboration between Franco and “James P. Jhonson,” who is also Franco.)

  28. Lina Romay in Jess Franco's best movie, Doriana Gray (Die Marquise von Sade), 1976. Inspired by Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

  29. Naked Girl Murdered in the Park (1972) certainly has a title that will get your attention. It also suggests you’re about to see a giallo. It is, sort of. It's crazy enough to be a giallo.

In fact it's an Alfonso Brescia movie. He made some of the most gloriously insane movies of all time. This is one of his less crazy efforts but it's pretty enjoyable.

  30. DR. ORLOFF’S MONSTER (1964) isn’t the masterpiece of Jess Franco’s first, less personal, pre-NECRONOMICON (aka SUCCUBUS) phase of his career. Said masterpiece would come two years later, with THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z. Its plotting is indifferent, giving us a villain whose motives are rather obscure, and leaving little room for Franco to indulge his phantasmagorical explorations of human identity and sexuality.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth watching.

  31. Aldo Lado's Who Saw Her Die? is a 1972 giallo and watching this movie it’s impossible not to be reminded of Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now although Lado’s film predates Roeg’s by a year. There are striking similarities.

Who Saw Her Die? Is perhaps more of a conventional thriller, albeit a clever and complex one with plenty of psychological depth. A fine suspenseful giallo.

  32. Addendum to my thread yesterday on THE SAGA OF DRACULA. I was just re-reading a few things about the film, and I’d forgotten that it was the first film (not counting so-called “documentaries”) to run with the theory that Dracula was Vlad III. So that gives it an extra bit of historical interest.

  33. THE SAGA OF DRACULA (1973) is the work of Paul Naschy’s frequent director, León Klimovsky. It’s not his best non-Naschy horror film (I prefer THE VAMPIRES’ NIGHT ORGY from the same year), and feels like it could have used Naschy’s manic hand on the script, as there isn’t quite enough plot for its running time, leading to long stretches where nothing much happens. It does, though, have some rewards for the patient viewer.

  34. DEVIL’S KISS (1976), or, to use the title as it appears on-screen, DEVIL KISS, is an Italian Gothic that tosses in a bit of everything. We have a spiritualist intent on avenging the wrongs her family suffered and that led to her husband’s suicide. Her ally is a scientist expert in telepathy. They combine science and black magic to reanimate a corpse and infuse it with a demon, who will then be controlled telepathically. All good stuff.

  35. Last night we revisited Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In, a great movie - and I’m surprised it’s not totally considered a euro horror masterpiece among horror fans? Because it’s totally one! #theskinilivein #pedroalmodovar #AntonioBanderas #eurohorror

  36. Not so long ago, I commented that RITES, BLACK MAGIC AND SECRET ORGIES managed to be completely plotless. It certainly is, but it most certainly is not, as is the case with CASTLE OF THE CREEPING FLESH (1968), virtually eventless. Viewing the latter last night made the former look like a masterpiece.

  37. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), Dario Argento's debut feature. Not much gore but incredibly stylish.

The opening sequence may be the best in the history of cinema.

Based on Fredric Brown’s novel The Screaming Mimi, and the twists at the end are delightfully devious.

  38. Euro horror is, and I can confirm this, the gateway drug for art house movies and the reason why most fans of Fulci, Argento, Bava etc sooner or later have a more acquired, open-minded taste in films than any typical, generic film scholar.

  39. Lucio Fulci’s One on Top of the Other (AKA Perversion Story) is a 1969 psycho-sexual thriller that has some definite giallo stylistic touches. And it has no gore. It is however delightfully decadent and visually stylish. My favourite Fulci movie.
