  1. Very inspirative in many ways, it serves like a bridge for cultural understanding between the western world and the eastern world. Despite initial controversy and bans in some Arab countries upon its release, it has became a respectful and essential historical film

  2. If I may say, this film is one of the best films from 1970s and, a very influential and significant classic film. Just look at its unique production, it was remarkable yet so difficult to make, considering many its large-scale scenes and also filmed twice.

  3. In Ramadan 1447 Hijri in the year 2026, I watched this film in Arabic version. The Arabic version is longer and more complete with a duration of 3 hours and 27 minutes (207 minutes) compared to the English version with a duration of 2 hours and 58 minutes (178 minutes).

  4. It is a tradition for me to watch the film "The Message" by Moustapha Akkad every Ramadan every year. Released in 1976, this film is one of the best epic and adventure films and also one of the best films about Islam. I love its beautiful cinematography and epic storytelling.

  5. Yoshiaki Kawajiri's 1993 anime Ninja Scroll combines action, adventure, swordplay, fantasy, horror, outrageous imagery and perverse eroticism. Ninjas battling demons! A lady ninja whose body kills any man who sleeps with her! A must-see movie.

  6. Lake of Dracula (1971), 2nd film in the Bloodthirsty Trilogy, starts with a dream. Then the dream events seem to really happen. And opening coffins is always a bad idea. There are vampires, and Dracula is involved in directly. Not a bad movie.

  7. Antonio Margheriti’s Web of the Spider is a colour remake of his excellent 1964 Castle of Blood. With Klaus Kinski as Edgar Allan Poe! A good slightly offbeat gothic horror film featuring ghosts (sort of) and a nice aesthetic. Cool ending.

  8. This will upset Fulci fans but I really disliked his 1972 giallo Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972). And in general I'm a major Fulci fan. The right ingredients and a fine cast. Florinda Bolkan is excellent. It just didn't come together for me.

  9. The fine 1972 giallo So Sweet, So Dead begins with a very dead naked girl. Cop Farley Granger's problem is the victim was a general's wife so he has to tread carefully. More murders follow among the decadent rich. The ending packs a real punch.

  10. Just Jaeckin’s The Last Romantic Lover (1978) may be his best film. A circus performer enters a contest to find the country's most romantic man. A strange, magical, entrancing, insanely romantic film with hints of screwball comedy.

  11. Snapshot is a 1979 Australian thriller which is a lot more interesting than its reputation suggests. The surprises here are not the plot twists but the ways in which the characters just don’t behave quite like conventional thriller characters.

  12. Clint Eastwood’s superb directorial debut Play Misty For Me (1971). Classic suspenser/erotic thriller. Amazing performance by Jessica Walter. I love that Eastwood did not cast himself as a conventional hero. Just a regular guy out of his depth.

  13. The original Airport (1970) is quite different from the sequels. It isn't a disaster movie as such. It's an aviation thriller (and a good one) but mostly it's a typical Ross Hunter-produced melodrama. And it's thoroughly enjoyable melodrama.

  14. Savage Three (Fango bollente, 1975), a nasty little movie combining poliziottesco and psycho killer movie elements. Superbly chilling performance by Joe Dallesandro combining evil and innocence. Great movie.

  15. The 1976 King Kong remake is woefully inferior to the original. A trainwreck but an interesting one. Dull characters but great visuals and nicely perverse eroticism. Jessica Lange is no Fay Wray but she isn't that bad and she's cute and sexy.

  16. Borsalino (1970), a gorgeous-looking hugely entertaining French gangster film set in the 30s with Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo oozing charisma and sexiness and coolness. Don’t overthink this movie. Just wallow in the style.

  17. The Fifth Floor (1978) is a psychiatric terror film. A girl is locked in a mental hospital after a suicide attempt but it was really attempted murder. She's treated as if she's crazy but she isn't. No-one believes her. Effectively chilling.

  18. Jean-Pierre Melville’s Un Flic (1972), perhaps neonoir but more existentialist crime film. Alain Delon is a cop, there are two heists, but it's an art film, a coldly intellectual exercise in absurdism, existentialism, alienation and isolation.

  19. Syndicate Sadists (1975) is a 1975 Umberto Lenzi poliziottesco that's really a lone wolf hero vigilante movie. Tomas Milian stars and he has a personal score to settle. There's a kidnapping. Not Lenzi's best but Milian's charisma caries it.

  20. The Devil’s Possessed (1974) is a Paul Naschy movie based very loosely on the crimes of the infamous Gilles de Rais. Set in 15th century France it combines swashbuckling adventure with plenty of horror. Naschy is deliciously cruel and evil.

  21. Looking for Mr Goodbar (1977), a failure but an interesting one which misses the point of the source novel rather badly. It's at least an attempt to deal with female sexuality but loses its nerve. Diane Keaton is great. Flawed but worth a look.

  22. Scream of the Demon Lover (1970) is a well executed Spanish-Italian gothic horror/gothic romance movie. It has the right gothic look, it has energy and flair, some nudity and plenty of hints of strange sexual kinks. Plus a mad scientist. Bliss!

  23. Massimo Dallamano's 1976 poliziottesco Colt 38 Special Squad concerns an elite four-man squad of motorcycle-riding cops and a personal vendetta between a cop and a gang boss. A stylish but very violent very dark movie with fine action scenes.

  24. Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975), the adventures of an American girl in Mexico. A nice girl, except that she seduces men, kills them and drinks their blood. Maybe she's a vampire or maybe she's just eccentric. Weird arty excellent Mexican horror.

  25. Death by Invitation (1971) starts with a young girl on trial for witchcraft. Then it's the 1970s and we encounter the same people and assume they're destined to relive those events. Weird, unsettling and disorienting. I liked it quite a bit.

  26. Hayley Mills and Oliver Reed make a delightful mismatched couple in Take a Girl Like You (1970), based on Kingsley Amis's novel. Offbeat quirky witty and sophisticated film dealing with love and sex in a grown-up way. Good-natured and charming.

  27. Futureworld (1976), the disappointing sequel to the brilliant Westworld. Michael Crichton was not involved, and his contributions are sorely missed. Yul Brynner is in this film for 15 seconds. It's not terrible but it all falls a bit flat.

  28. The Killer Is One of Thirteen (1973) is a Spanish giallo or rather proto-giallo, these films being stylish decadent erotic thrillers rather than gorefests. Sadly this one has the decadence but it's slow, very unsexy and not stylish enough.

  29. Legend of the Witches (1970), an odd faux-documentary taking a sympathetic look at witchcraft in the modern world and with re-enactments (possibly quite realistic) of witchcraft rituals, laced with copious nudity. And some vague hippie touches.

  30. Psychomania is a 1973 British zombie biker movie. It’s terrible, but kind of great as well. A biker discovers how to come back from the dead. More of a witchcraft or even a satansploitation movie than a zombie movie. Totally nuts but great fun.

  31. The Mephisto Waltz is a 1971 gothic horror movie about a music journalist who is a failed concert pianist. If only he had a better pair of hands! Of course he could always make a pact with the Devil. Nicely decadent. Flawed but enjoyable.

  32. Norman J. Warren's Prey is a weird, disturbing, oddball 1977 British sci-fi horror movie. An alien takes refuge in an isolated farmhouse inhabited by two lesbians. His arrival makes an already tense situation explosive. Fascinating movie.

  33. A Quiet Place To Kill (1970) is a superb stylish early-period Umberto Lenzi giallo. Lots of twisted emotional and erotic relationships that take deadly and unexpected turns. Carroll Baker is fantastic. I love pre-Argento giallos.

  34. Ava Gardner stars in The Ballad of Tam Lin (1970), Roddy McDowall’s only film as a director. An odd but interesting and ambiguous folk horror movie inspired by a Scottish folk tale about a love triangle involving the queen of the fairies.
