  1. 📽 Last night, I had the honour to introduce "The Cremator" at the Czechoslovak New Wave Festival, an initiative by @czechcentrerotterdam & @narodnifilmovyarchiv. The Cremator, directed by Juraj Herz and with Rudolf Hrušínský as the lead character, is considered one of the best movies in Czechoslovak cinematic history. From 2 November thru 4 January, fourteen Czechoslovak nouvelle vague films will be screened at @kinorotterdam #czechnewwave #czechcentrerotterdam #novellevaguecinema #cinema

  2. Happy End (1966, Czech) is a clever howler of a dark comedy from the #CzechNewWave

The structure is literally backwards. Born from the guillotine, raised in a prison, assembles his wife from pieces, confronted by his wife's lover who flies in through a window. His baby shrinks until she disappears.

And the dialogue isn't just backwards, it's set up to have that deliver a series of jokes.

Priest, giving him his last rites: You will meet God soon, my boy.
    Protagonist: That's disgusting.
Protagonist reluctantly tries a last cigarette.

The whole thing is on the #InternetArchive with English subs and is highly recommended:

  4. VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (’70): If you’re a “plot person”- and I normally am one- you may be driven mad by the non-linear (non-sensical?) story here. But I was just so delighted with the surrealistic creativity, the visual thrill, the “gleefully gothic” nature of this, I couldn’t get too hung up. Kinda mind blowing this came from a Communist country; quite the indictment of various tenets of organized society. I found the whole thing marvelous and intoxicating. #CzechNewWave

#EsterKrumbachová's feminist farce Vražda ing. Čerta [The Murder of Mr. Devil] (1970) is a delight of many flavours. Ona (Jiřina Bohdalová) is already 40 and wants a man. She remembers one from her youth, the handsome, slim, and very cultured Mr Devil (the great Vladimír Menšík), and knows that the one way to a man's heart is through the stomach ☞ write.underworld.fr/settima/vr
