SINOPSE:
No ano de 2230, dois séculos após um holocausto nuclear, a humanidade divide-se entre os que vivem no subsolo e os nômades da superfície. Um grupo de motociclistas errantes encontra uma cidade deserta e um laboratório que prometia a purificação da Terra. No entanto, o local tornou-se o ninho de milhares de ratos mutantes e carnívoros. Opinião:
Ratos: A Noite do Terror é uma das joias da coroa do cinema “trash” italiano dos anos 80. Dirigido pela dupla dinâmica Bruno Mattei e Claudio Fragasso, o filme é um deleite para quem aprecia a estética pós-apocalíptica inspirada em Mad Max, mas com aquele tempero de horror visceral que só os italianos sabiam entregar. A confusão de nomes na capa do VHS (Vincent Dawn vs. Fragasso/Mattei) é apenas o começo do charme dessa produção, que exala criatividade técnica mesmo com orçamento limitado.

O grande destaque, sem dúvida, é a trilha sonora. Composta por Luigi Ceccarelli, a música abusa de sintetizadores e sons programados que criam uma atmosfera futurista e progressiva, elevando a tensão em cada corredor escuro do laboratório. Visualmente, o filme não economiza: o uso de ratos reais (misturados com alguns truques de câmera) gera um desconforto genuíno, especialmente nas cenas em que as criaturas atacam em massa. É um horror tátil, “sujo”, onde você quase consegue sentir o cheiro de ferrugem e perigo.

O elenco, liderado por ícones do gênero como Ottaviano Dell’Acqua e a carismática Geretta Geretta, entrega performances intensas que combinam perfeitamente com o clima de urgência da trama. E, claro, não podemos deixar de mencionar o final — um dos desfechos mais irônicos e comentados da história do cinema de terror italiano, que deixa o espectador com aquele sorriso incrédulo no rosto. Lançado originalmente no Brasil pela FJ Lucas, o filme continua sendo uma parada obrigatória para quem quer entender o poder do cinema independente europeu em criar pesadelos inesquecíveis. Um clássico absoluto que sobreviveu ao tempo e ao VHS!

Zombie 3 was started by Lucio Fulci but ended up finished by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso. That might sound like a step down, but I'm also going to guess one of those two jokers that took over came up with the flying zombie head launching from a freezer, and, for that, I salute them.

Just rewatched RATS - NIGHT OF TERROR last night. So much fun. One of the few films that can match the shocking ending of the original PLANET OF THE APES. And always nice to see committed actors who are willing to suffer for their art.

Bruno Mattei’s Shocking Dark (AKA Terminator II, 1989) manages to be a rip-off Aliens, Terminator and Alien. It's not so much an homage as grand larceny. Which is fine by me. I love these Italian rip-off movies and this one is great fun.
