Pero el éxito escondía una trampa.
Hollywood dejó de verlo como un actor.
Ahora era simplemente Drácula.
Los productores empezaron a ofrecerle únicamente papeles de vampiros, científicos locos o personajes siniestros.
Él intentó escapar de ese encasillamiento.
Incluso rechazó interpretar al monstruo de Frankenstein porque el personaje permanecía oculto bajo un maquillaje pesado y apenas tenía diálogo.
Aquella decisión cambió la historia del cine.El papel fue para Boris Karloff.
Aunque durante décadas la prensa alimentó la idea de una gran rivalidad entre ambos, la realidad era mucho más tranquila.
Se respetaban profesionalmente y llegaron a trabajar juntos en varias ocasiones.Mientras Karloff veía crecer su carrera, la de Lugosi comenzaba a apagarse.
Su vida personal tampoco fue sencilla.
Se casó cinco veces.
Su primera esposa fue **Ilona Szmik**, de quien se divorció pocos años después.
Más tarde contrajo matrimonio con **Beatrice Weeks**, una rica viuda estadounidense, aunque aquella relación apenas duró cuatro meses.
Su matrimonio más estable fue con **Lillian Arch**, con quien tuvo en 1938 a su único hijo, **Bela George Lugosi**.
Después llegarían **Hope Lininger** y finalmente **Hope Lugosi**, quien permaneció junto a él hasta el final de su vida.
Fuera del cine era una persona muy distinta de la imagen que proyectaba.
Era educado, elegante, extremadamente profesional y un apasionado de los perros.
También disfrutaba practicando pequeños trucos de magia y era un fumador empedernido.Los problemas comenzaron a acumularse durante los años cuarenta.
Cada vez recibía menos ofertas importantes.
Para mantener su nivel de vida aceptó películas de serie B con presupuestos mínimos.
Al mismo tiempo, los dolores derivados de sus heridas de guerra empeoraban.
Los médicos comenzaron a recetarle morfina y otros analgésicos.
Con el paso de los años desarrolló una fuerte dependencia.
En 1955 protagonizó un hecho muy poco habitual para aquella época.
Ingresó voluntariamente en un hospital para tratar su adicción.
Mientras la mayoría de las estrellas ocultaban este tipo de problemas, Bela decidió reconocerlo públicamente.
Muchos pensaron que aquello acabaría definitivamente con su carrera.
En realidad, apenas quedaba ya carrera que destruir.
Quien nunca dejó de creer en él fue un joven director llamado **Ed Wood**.
Wood admiraba profundamente a Lugosi y le ofreció papeles cuando prácticamente nadie más quería contratarlo.
Las películas fueron un fracaso comercial y hoy siguen apareciendo en las listas de las peores de la historia.
Sin embargo, también convirtieron a ambos en figuras de culto.
El 16 de agosto de 1956 Bela Lugosi sufrió un infarto en su casa de Los Ángeles.
Tenía 73 años.
Su muerte pasó casi desapercibida para Hollywood.
Fue enterrado con la capa de Drácula.
Con los años nació la leyenda de que esa había sido su última voluntad.
En realidad, nunca apareció ninguna prueba que lo demostrara.
Todo indica que fue su esposa y su hijo quienes decidieron vestirlo así como homenaje al personaje que había marcado toda su vida.Paradójicamente, Bela Lugosi pasó décadas intentando demostrar que podía interpretar cualquier papel.
Nunca lo consiguió.
El personaje que lo convirtió en una leyenda también cerró todas las demás puertas.
Décadas después llegó el reconocimiento que nunca recibió en vida.
En 1962 obtuvo una estrella en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood.
En 1994, Martin Landau ganó el Óscar por interpretarlo en la película *Ed Wood*, dirigida por Tim Burton, acercando su historia a una nueva generación.
Hoy Bela Lugosi sigue siendo el Drácula por excelencia.
No porque fuera el primero.
Sino porque nadie ha conseguido borrar la imagen de aquel actor húngaro que llegó a Estados Unidos sin hablar inglés y terminó creando uno de los personajes más inmortales de la historia del cine.
Quizá esa sea la mayor ironía de todas.
Bela Lugosi dedicó media vida intentando escapar de Drácula.
Y fue precisamente Drácula quien le concedió la inmortalidad.

I saw the 4K restoration of THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932) tonight at the Quad Cinema in NYC.
Boris Karloff’s second film w/ James Whale (between FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN) is delightfully idiosyncratic and atmospheric — and features a stellar cast.
So nice to see it looking better than ever!
