Death by Invitation (1971) starts with a young girl on trial for witchcraft. Then it's the 1970s and we encounter the same people and assume they're destined to relive those events. Weird, unsettling and disorienting. I liked it quite a bit.

Godzilla: Invasion of the Astro-monster (1965): Godzilla and Rodan are sent to Planet X to save its inhabitants from King Ghidorah. This is a space opera and a monster movie. Best things about it - no comic relief, no cute kids, no preachiness.

Psychomania is a 1973 British zombie biker movie. It’s terrible, but kind of great as well. A biker discovers how to come back from the dead. More of a witchcraft or even a satansploitation movie than a zombie movie. Totally nuts but great fun.

The Mephisto Waltz is a 1971 gothic horror movie about a music journalist who is a failed concert pianist. If only he had a better pair of hands! Of course he could always make a pact with the Devil. Nicely decadent. Flawed but enjoyable.

Norman J. Warren's Prey is a weird, disturbing, oddball 1977 British sci-fi horror movie. An alien takes refuge in an isolated farmhouse inhabited by two lesbians. His arrival makes an already tense situation explosive. Fascinating movie.

Krull (1983) is more a sword-and-planet than a sword-and-sorcery film and has a lot in common with Star Wars. It includes every fantasy cliché imaginable but it looks fabulous and has energy, enthusiasm and style. And lots of action. Pure fun.

Four Times That Night is a Mario Bava movie. It's Rashomon done as a sex comedy. Made in 1968 but not released until 1971 by which time it seemed very tame. It's not much admired even by Bava fans but I enjoyed it. Great 60s Bava visuals.

I'd describe A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971) as a proto-giallo and it has psychiatry, madness, decadence and style. Don't worry about the plot, just let Lucio Fulci play with your head. One of his best.

Sinbad of the Seven Seas is a 1989 Cannon Films adventure fantasy with such a troubled production history you’d expect it to be a trainwreck. In fact it’s magnificent. It makes very little sense but it’s crazy fun from start to finish.

I'm very fond of Jean Rollin’s late films like Dracula's Fiancee (2002). They have a magical vibe, reminiscent of magic realism with no attempt to explain the magical elements. Once again Rollin creates a whole new mythology. Mesmerising stuff.

Sergio Corbucci's The Slave is a 1962 peplum with a Roman Empire setting. It's about the son of Spartacus. The Romans are definitely the bad guys. Steve Reeves makes a fine hero. Visually impressive and entertaining despite the flawed ending.

Star Slammer (AKA Prison Ship) is a 1986 Fred Olen Ray movie so you know it will be crazy goofy fun. A women-in-prison movie set on a prison spaceship but done in good-natured tongue-in-cheek fashion. Fun and silly and exciting and amusing.
