  1. Love After Death (1968), a 1968 erotic horror film of obscure origin. It starts with a man being buried alive. He survives, he pursues women and people try to kill him again. It becomes increasingly nutty, but in a good way. Wonderfully crazy.

  2. Sinbad of the Seven Seas is a 1989 Cannon Films adventure fantasy with such a troubled production history you’d expect it to be a trainwreck. In fact it’s magnificent. It makes very little sense but it’s crazy fun from start to finish.

  3. Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975), the adventures of an American girl in Mexico. A nice girl, except that she seduces men, kills them and drinks their blood. Maybe she's a vampire or maybe she's just eccentric. Weird arty excellent Mexican horror.

  4. Death by Invitation (1971) starts with a young girl on trial for witchcraft. Then it's the 1970s and we encounter the same people and assume they're destined to relive those events. Weird, unsettling and disorienting. I liked it quite a bit.

  5. Legend of the Witches (1970), an odd faux-documentary taking a sympathetic look at witchcraft in the modern world and with re-enactments (possibly quite realistic) of witchcraft rituals, laced with copious nudity. And some vague hippie touches.

  6. Godzilla: Invasion of the Astro-monster (1965): Godzilla and Rodan are sent to Planet X to save its inhabitants from King Ghidorah. This is a space opera and a monster movie. Best things about it - no comic relief, no cute kids, no preachiness.

  7. Psychomania is a 1973 British zombie biker movie. It’s terrible, but kind of great as well. A biker discovers how to come back from the dead. More of a witchcraft or even a satansploitation movie than a zombie movie. Totally nuts but great fun.

  8. Norman J. Warren's Prey is a weird, disturbing, oddball 1977 British sci-fi horror movie. An alien takes refuge in an isolated farmhouse inhabited by two lesbians. His arrival makes an already tense situation explosive. Fascinating movie.

  9. Four Times That Night is a Mario Bava movie. It's Rashomon done as a sex comedy. Made in 1968 but not released until 1971 by which time it seemed very tame. It's not much admired even by Bava fans but I enjoyed it. Great 60s Bava visuals.

  10. Count Dracula’s Great Love (1973), Spanish vampire film starring and written by Paul Naschy. Contrary to the popular critical view this is an excellent, intelligent, emotionally nuanced, clever, provocative, trashy, sleazy take on Dracula.

  11. The Playgirls and the Vampire (1962). A bevy of beautiful showgirls stranded when their bus breaks down, they take shelter in a gothic castle and of course the castle belongs to a vampire. Silly goofy Italian gothic horror fun. You'll needs lots of popcorn.

  12. Beyond the Door (AKA The Devil Within Her 1974) is one of the more notorious Italian Exorcist rip-offs and it rips off Rosemary's Baby as well. It's OK and has some fine moments but there are much better Italian Exorcist rip-offs.

  13. The Cats (I bastardi, 1968) is a dark cynical eurocrime movie about violent psychos with an insane twist ending I can guarantee you won't see coming. It stars Rita Hayworth and Klaus Kinski. Totally nuts but fascinating. Worth seeing.

  14. The Black Cat (1966), a very low-budget adaptation of Poe’s famous story. This is Poe in the world of crazy rock’n’roll music, miniskirts and go-go dancing. It works better than you'd expect. A very dark very gothic very effective horror film.

  15. The Fat Black Pussycat (1963) is a beat murder mystery about a beatnik psycho serial killer and a cat (an actual feline) that picks up human brain waves. Half-baked psychiatry and half-baked paranormal phenomena adds up to crazy oddball fun.

  16. I'm very fond of Jean Rollin’s late films like Dracula's Fiancee (2002). They have a magical vibe, reminiscent of magic realism with no attempt to explain the magical elements. Once again Rollin creates a whole new mythology. Mesmerising stuff.

  17. The Enchanting Ghost (1970) an early Shaw Brothers foray into supernatural horror. An oddly discordant mixture of farce, romance and horror, usually dismissed as very lightweight. But with possibly more to it than meets the eye.

  18. The Moving Finger, a now totally forgotten 1963 crime thriller set in the Greenwich Village beatnik scene (that scene becomes the film's main focus). It starts with a bank robbery gone wrong. An engagingly oddball movie that's rather fun.

  19. Sergio Corbucci's The Slave is a 1962 peplum with a Roman Empire setting. It's about the son of Spartacus. The Romans are definitely the bad guys. Steve Reeves makes a fine hero. Visually impressive and entertaining despite the flawed ending.

  20. Pupi Avati's The House with Laughing Windows (1976) concerns a series of murders linked somehow to a frightening fresco painted by a mad artist. I wasn’t totally sold on this film but I did like the slightly off-kilter stylistic approach.

  21. Star Slammer (AKA Prison Ship) is a 1986 Fred Olen Ray movie so you know it will be crazy goofy fun. A women-in-prison movie set on a prison spaceship but done in good-natured tongue-in-cheek fashion. Fun and silly and exciting and amusing.

  22. Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968), a low-budget Philippines-shot horror film with a vague Island of Dr Moreau mad scientist vibe, and green-blooded monsters. Good monster makeup. Unashamedly lurid and trashy and schlocky and I enjoyed it.

  23. Aenigma (1987), a fine late Lucio Fulci film (I do like late Fulci). Seriously surreal and twisted. Unsettling and perplexing but in a way that is original and distinctive. It takes place in a nightmare world in which reality plays little part.

  24. Sergio Martino's The Island of the Fishmen (1979). Prison ship survivors are marooned on an island and they're up against monsters, voodoo and mad people. It's a glorious romp done with style and energy and a slight steampunk vibe. Great fun.

  25. The Italian-Spanish co-production MURDER MANSION (1972). Three people take refuge in a spooky house. There are rumours of vampires and witches. But is this a gothic horror movie or a giallo? It doesn't matter. It's crazy oddball and fun and looks good.

  26. Krull (1983) is more a sword-and-planet than a sword-and-sorcery film and has a lot in common with Star Wars. It includes every fantasy cliché imaginable but it looks fabulous and has energy, enthusiasm and style. And lots of action. Pure fun.

  27. The Terror Within, a 1989 Roger Corman-produced Alien rip-off set on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Competently done despite the cheap monster effects. The action scenes are well-staged. Exciting violent fun with some good suspense.

  29. Night of the Devils (1972), based on Aleksey Tolstoy's 1839 story Family of the Vourdalak. A man takes refuge in a remote farm and finds himself in a world of medieval superstition and a stifling atmosphere of fear and suspicion. Great stuff.
