  1. Blackpool – Kicking the Poorest People into the Gutter

Improving the lives of people "entrenched in poverty" would be praiseworthy if this project did that but gentrification removes poverty from an area by forceable displacement of the current poverty stricken residents. The council fails to clarify how the lives of the evicted are being improved. Hundreds of families in one of England’s poorest neighbourhoods will be evicted under a £90m plan described by critics as a “mass dispersion” of vulnerable people. 400 homes in Blackpool will […]

  6. #Pedestrian fatalities have risen 83% from a low in 2009. Bigger, heavier #SUV s & distraction play a part.

The largest factor is night-time speed on urban arterial routes, common in older, socially #deprived, multifamily housing & "arts/entertainment/food/accommodations" #neighborhoods, disproportionately affecting less #affluent people.

#Cars are prioritized over #walkers & #cyclists, with a lack of sidewalks & crossings on wide roads with retail locations.

  7. Really useful and important investigative #journalism on the UK #riots July-August 2024, showing the demographics of over 500 of those convicted - they were not mainly "out of town" but local; the majority were over 30; they were from #LeftBehind neighbourhoods - the most #deprived, #unemployed and #unhealthy places - and places more likely to vote for the #ReformParty.

  8. Perhaps later modules of the #COVID-19 #Inquiry report will ask to what extent #SocialDarwinist and #eugenicist politicians knowingly or intentionally crafted policy that widened inequality. Political leaders did not care about #disabled, #older, #deprived and financially #precarious people. They possibly committed #democide, accelerating deaths of people with high social welfare costs (and inadvertently causing even greater levels of long-term illness & unemployment).

  9. New report from the Centre for Social Justice on the State of Poverty in the UK:

    centreforsocialjustice.org.uk/

It exposes a growing gap between those who can manage reasonably well and those who find themselves trapped at the botom of the heap.

'The economic vulnerability of the most #deprived is highlighted, with work often proving financially unrewarding due to poor-quality, insecure jobs and stagnant #wages'.

According to Andy Cook, the chief executive of the Centre for #SocialJustice: 'What this report shows is that we need far more than discussions on finance but a strategy to go after the root causes of #poverty, #education, #work, #debt, #addiction and family.'

    Can't argue with that.

  10. The Tragic Decline of 'Free' News.

It’s Not a Good Sign When People Who Don’t Pay for News, Have So Little to Choose From.

Opinion | Whatever Happened to ‘Free’ News? - The New York Times.

    (And they've put this behind a paywall !! 🙈 )

  11. Why is #violence high and persistent in #deprived #communities? A formal model

    #OpenAccess

"Being below the threshold makes risky actions, such as #PropertyCrime, beneficial. In simulated populations with heterogeneous levels of resources, when #deprivation or #inequality is high, there are more desperate individuals, hence a higher risk of exploitation. It then becomes advantageous to use violence, to send a ‘toughness signal’ to exploiters"
