  1. First Bus will field the largest contingent in the Bus Driver of the Year final, with 36 drivers qualifying from across its #UK depots. The final will take place in #Blackpool on 6 September, with current champion Michael Leech, from Halifax, seeking to retain his title.

First Bus drivers will account for around a third of the 100-plus finalists. #Yorkshire is the best-represented region, with 11 drivers, followed by East & Midlands with 10, South & West with six, and #Scotland, #Wales and #London with three each.

Finalists were selected through driving assessments, including performance, technical skills, manoeuvres and customer interaction, alongside records covering speed, braking, turning, accidents, near misses and customer feedback.

First Bus is also offering £1,000 to its highest-placed driver and £500 for second place.

  2. 🇮🇪🚉 Iarnród Éireann has lodged a planning application for a new railway station at Dunkettle, the second of two early station projects under the #Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme following #Blackpool. The station, beside the Dunkettle Interchange, will serve Cork-Cobh and Cork-Midleton services, include a 300-space park-and-ride and be fully accessible. It is designed to improve access to rail, reduce road congestion and support future service increases, with trains expected to run every five minutes in each direction once the wider programme is complete. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, subject to planning approval and funding. The wider programme includes electrification, six more stations and a new depot, with a #Railway Order application due later this year. Phase 1 works, including Platform 6 at #Kent Station, signalling upgrades and twin-tracking to Midleton, are already under way.

  4. I've had #Fabulous by #MEEK stuck on loop in my head most of this year, but I only just got around to watching the #musicVideo.

Turns out it traces a route through #Blackpool that I'm somewhat familiar with... it follows what (in my mind) might be Britain's gayest pub crawl! If I wasn't already "feeling fucking fabulous", I would be now!

Anyway, I went through scene-by-scene and I can place almost all the outdoor shots... and several of the indoor ones:

  6. CW: Article: (Feeling Fucking) Fabulous in Blackpool

This year, MEEK's Fabulous has been stuck on a loop in my head, but I only just got around to watching the music video. Which, to my delight, is shot in the region of what I reckon is Britain's gayest pub crawl. Let's take a tour together...

  7. #UK #Government guidance allows #English councils to create new local authority bus companies (LABCos) after the Bus Services Act 2025 removed the previous restriction. The guidance outlines legal, financial, governance and operational issues councils should consider before setting one up.

A LABCo is optional and one of several ways to improve bus services, alongside franchising and enhanced partnerships. Councils must assess the benefits, funding, leadership, skills and long-term sustainability before proceeding. They can create a new company or buy an existing operator, with options to run services independently or as part of wider transport arrangements. The guidance also covers procurement, subsidy control, employment matters and local government changes. Existing LABCos include #Blackpool Transport, #Ipswich Buses, #Nottingham City #Transport, Reading Buses and Warrington’s Own Buses.

  9. Our stopover mid-journey is at #Blackpool. Because of where we live, NJs never been. So it's good to give her a new experience on what is a samey-journey.

The challenge for us highland-inhabitants is this rare "sun and heat" combo were not used to.

    Thank goodness for sun cream...

But my Fibro, which normally would lessen in these conditions, isn't doing that. Not helpful...

  12. As people wilt under the heat, this 1920's collection box from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute is a permanent reminder of the need for water safety.

Even inland, the rnli.org safeguard lives across the UK by providing education at local community events. So, if you come across them this Summer, please stop and say hello 🌞

  14. In the BBC's regional lunchtime news we had a journalist doing his piece from Blackpool, where he met someone with a Brazil football top, and he did the jounalistic "Did you know that" question, so I have written to BBC Northwest Today

    Hi
In his piece at lunchtime Yunnus Mulla used the journalistic "Did you know that Blackpool is warmer than Rio de Janeiro?" throw away question to a person he was talking too.
Firstly the UK is in its summer season, and places in the North West should be having temperatures around the 19Celsius level, not 8 to 12 degrees above this.
Secondly, Rio is approx 4 hours behind UK time, and 20 degrees in the morning is not too bad in Winter (Rio's current season).
Thirdly, Rio is only about 2,800 miles from the equator, whereas Blackpool is more than double that at 5700 miles! The nearest place that is on a similar latitude to Blackpool are The Falkland Islands, and current temperatures there is about 15 degrees below that in Rio!

    Thanks for reading!

  16. Played the #Blackpool edition of 'Monopoly' last night. Didn't enjoy it. I was stuck on Devonshire Road for about 40 minutes at temporary traffic lights.
