Gigantes se unem para massificar D2D e eliminar zonas mortas de conexão nos EUA

I have officially delisted my books from D2D, and sent them a formal complaint through their system (which is delightfully flooded by complaints; so much so that they have an big notice at the top of the contact form that they are absolutely drowning!).
Hopefully they will fix the "let's make the poorest pay" bullshit and maybe then I can put my books back up there. If not well...we still have only bad options. ):

Well… this is frustrating.
I’ve been publishing my writing through Amazon since around 2017/2018, and last year I decided to expand to other platforms. Draft2Digital seemed like a great, simple way to distribute my books more widely without a lot of extra hassle.
AI has made the landscape a lot messier for actual human creators. There’s been a surge of AI-generated books flooding the market, and now it looks like some companies are responding by introducing fees for independent authors just to get their work out there.
I’ll need to rethink how I’m distributing my writing, because this model doesn’t really work for me right now. Paying an annual fee if I don’t sell enough copies just doesn’t sit right, especially when books take up so little digital space.
While I figure out my next steps and continue working on future projects, feel free to check out and share my work. If you're new to my writing, I'm a genre blender leaning into a dark gothic feel while embracing urban fantasy, science fiction, and post-apocalyptic themes. Give these interesting nightmares a home. You can grab a book at:
ElfLinks.Weebly.com
If you’re not sure where to start, Making Contact is a shorter read and a great entry point involving an important recurring character in my works, while Shadowed Memories leads into the story I’m currently outlining.

D2D services are at risk of becoming too complicated and siloed
-
I guess if Draft2Digital decides that I have to start paying to keep my books there, I will just delete them all from there.
I don't publish often, as the whole process is very difficult for my brain and I am just a single person doing 90% of the process myself from the writing, cover, editing, format (I do have a proofeditor, and my edits are manual and very extensive).
This will just push small indies like me to Amazon.
Especially disabled indies with little energy to spare. -
Amazon bulks up its LEO Direct-to-Device (D2D) services by acquiring GlobalStar - a Louisiana based mobile satellite services (MSS) operator.
Amazon is picking up Globalstar’s existing satellite fleet, satellite operations, infrastructure and assets, including spectrum licenses with global authorizations with the goal to bolster its own direct-to-device satellite system, which it expects to start deploying in 2028.

'Good news!' Draft2Digital tells me when I log in, 'You can add your books to Bookshop.org now'.
I click the button to do so.
D2D: 😱🤮❌❌❌
BLOCKED BLOCKED BLOCKED
Not THOSE books! They're full of icky sex and mature themes!
Ew! Gross! We can't let Booksjop.org know we technically allow you to publish that! What will Mastercard think??
Won't anybody think of the shareholders??Me: Yeah, that's what I thought you'd say, you stupid horse.

Did anyone else try out the Apple Voice Technology offered for free by Draft2Digital to produce audiobooks? I was amazed at how terrible and primitive the Apple Voice Technology actually is, considering what Apple is. Here's one clue about how terrible the technology is: I wrote a book in 2023 under the pen name N.J. Edwards. The computer-generated male voice introduced the audiobook this way: "This is an audiobook by author New Jersey Edwards. Granted, New Jersey Edwards is a fantastic pen name. I wish I'd thought of it. But that is not the author's name on the front of my book. The audiobook of my novel BEER POUR is so atrocious that there's actual computer code jibberish spoken in the middle of a dialogue scene. I could go on and on about all the flaws, but there's not enough room here. Go back to the drawing board, Apple. #Apple #audiobook #books #bookstodon #mastodon #book #novel #novel #voice #tech #technology #author #NewJersey #draft2digital #D2D #computergenerated #computer #introduction #intro #introductions #scribesAndMakers #writing #writersCoffeeClub #writer #publishing #MyWork #writersOfMastodon #writers #writersLife #indieAuthor #author #authors #audio #audiofiction #startup

Weekly output: LocalSend, Mark Vena podcast, AST SpaceMobile launch
I hope you all are enjoying the liminal time between Christmas and New Year’s–or, as I’ve come to think of it over the last 25-plus years, my last moments of occupational tranquility before work returns with force in the form of CES.
(I’ve used some of that semi-idle time to write an extra post for Patreon readers about the free trips that I didn’t take in the last quarter of this year.)
12/22/2025: This Free App Makes Transferring Files Between Devices Ridiculously Easy, PCMag
Quizzing LocalSend’s developer via e-mail taught me a lesson in how namespaces and nations can mix. As in: He goes by Tien Do Nam, in Vietnam last names come first, he lives in Berlin, so I thought to ask for his surname. He replied that the correct full name is Do Nam Tien, while his German documents list him as Tien Do Nam.
12/24/2025: Ep 117 SmartTechCheck Podcast — Trump’s impact on tech, AI data centers and energy, FCC and Google, Mark Vena
As the token Washingtonian on this podcast, I took up the first item on the agenda. My take on President Trump’s tech policy wasn’t all bad–it looks like the government is in line to save tens of billions of dollars in broadband-buildout costs, assuming that Amazon Leo satellite broadband comes online on schedule–but I can’t call it anything close to good overall.
12/24/2025: AST SpaceMobile Launches Its Most Powerful Direct-to-Cell Satellite Yet, PCMag
Was I going to use this post as an opportunity to remind PCMag readers about India’s impressive spaceflight ambitions? Absolutely.

Weekly output: FCC independence, Starlink mobile-broadband ambitions, TAE + TMTG, best WiFi hotspots
In addition to wrapping up my holiday shopping far later than I expected, this week saw me mostly finish migrating from Evernote to Obsidian after management at the note-taking app I’ve used since 2010 elected to impose a 92 percent rate increase.
12/18/2025: FCC Scrambles to Edit Website After Chair Refuses to Say Agency Is Independent, PCMag
Here we have yet another case of the 2025 version of FCC chair Brendan Carr taking a position on a tech-policy issue explicitly rejected by an earlier model year of this man. But this time around, the Trump-loyalist chairman made his heel turn even more obvious by apparently ordering up a hasty edit of the commission’s about-us page.
12/19/2025: SpaceX Exec Tips ‘Real’ High-Speed Cellular Starlink, With 15K More Satellites, PCMag
This story started with my attending a space-telecom conference in D.C. two Mondays ago, then I needed to educate myself much more about SpaceX’s ambitions for direct-to-device broadband from a future generation of Starlink satellites.
12/19/2025: Trump’s Truth Social to Merge With Fusion Startup You’ve Probably Never Heard Of, PCMag
Will the Trump family still be so enthusiastic about TAE Technologies if their backing somehow helps it finally commercialize fusion power generation and in so doing hammers the last nail into the coffin of the coal-fired power plants so beloved by our scientifically-illiterate president? (Answer: That question is probably irrelevant, because coal is already so uncompetitive that this administration’s fossil-fuel fetishists feel compelled to issue orders to keep obsolete coal plants online on a fake “emergency” basis.)
12/19/2025: The Best Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wirecutter
I updated the “What to look forward to” section of this guide–last updated almost a year ago–to note how AT&T has added two newer models to its lineup. One of them looks like an immense improvement over our previous pick from that carrier.

#Draft2Digital is removing the #PayWhatYouWant option from #Smashwords, so I fear soon the only option to offer pay what you want is my payhip shop:
Most people pay $0 and that's OK, the story is available online for free, but for those who WANT to tip me, I like the "pay what you want" option and I'm sad that #D2D decided to remove it.
Right now, Zeus & Hera's first time is still pay what you want on Smashwords:
-
On May 10, Draft2Digital is adding charges to payouts through PayPal and check options.
- PayPal (U.S.) will charge 2.5% with a total not to exceed $1.50
- PayPal (International) will charge 2.5% with a total not to exceed $25.00
- Check (U.S.) $2.50 flat fee
- Check (International) $4.00 flat fee
There are no fees for Direct Deposit or Payoneer options.
-
#Draft2Digital published the survey results of their #AI licensing survey. They claim that the questions were neutral when I feel they were biased towards wanting licensing deals but the results and subsequent decision by #D2D not to go ahead with #LLM licensing deals are interesting nonetheless:
https://www.draft2digital.com/blog/2024-ai-training-survey-results/
(I am surprised there were people willing to offer their books for scraping for less than $100)
-
Thank you, Draft 2 Digital!
"D2D'S STANCE
Until we see significant reforms, especially around greater contractual protections and transparency governing use, intellectual property protections, and rights restrictions, Draft2Digital will not offer AI rights licensing opportunities." -
Did you know you can convert your DVD/Blu-ray collection to digital streaming/downloadable versions for as little as $2/disc?
And you can step up your older, lower resolution content to Blu-ray or 4KUHD for an additional fee?
And it's all legitimate. I have a digital library of 1000s of streamable/downloadable movies from over a decade of Ultraviolet & MoviesAnywhere use.
