  1. Heads up to Everand readers. While I was setting up the next story in my Real Hot Games series, I discovered that Everand is no longer allowing erotica at least through Draft2Digital.

In case they didn't notify you about that change to their service, I felt like it was worth making sure you were aware. It may not have any impact on you but, if I were an Everand customer, I would cancel my subscription over that.

  3. News Summary: Amazon Raises KDP 70% Royalty Cap to $12.99; Bookshop.org Launches Audiobooks in UK

Breaking news: as of July 7, Amazon has extended the upper limit of the 70 percent KDP royalty bracket to $12.99 from $9.99. That allows some books to have a higher ticket price reflecting an author's desire to price within the market, without having to take a hit down to the 35 percent royalty rate. For those in that $10–$12.99 range currently, you may be eligible to switch to 70 percent per the FAQs, but will not automatically be switched.

  5. #writingcommunity Can someone smarter than me explain how to click a button on the #draft2digital website and delete my account?

    I swear I looked everywhere.

  7. I asked Draft2Digital why their Smashwords bookstore wouldn’t show a sample of my books for potential readers - you know, a baseline need for any online bookstore - and they said it was because I was supplying epub3 files, and they could only generate a sample from epub2.

Epub3 has been around since 2011. It’s got multimedia features a purely text document doesn’t really need, sure, but it also has important accessibility functionality for screen readers. Even non-profit Gutenberg.org now publishes using epub3 as standard.

Draft2Digital must be pretty damn creaky behind the scenes if they can’t handle a fifteen-year-old format properly.

  9. I'm still pretty mixed about Draft2Digital because of their recent actions. However, I haven't migrated away from them yet. I'll still be participating in the Summer/Winter sale in July.

All of my Midge Hollerin and Ash Hollerin stories will be 50% off or more during the month of July. With the caveat that I will probably have at least one story publish in July and I don't know whether that will be discounted yet.

Please do take advantage of the sale. Please review my stories wherever you find them (if you've actually read the story!). Share them with friends. Don't feel conflicted about the D2D issues on my behalf.

(If you're unclear about what I'm talking about, see next post.)

  11. Back in 2022 I wrote a short story that unfolds on social media so has unorthodox formatting to represent social media formatting.

I'd uploaded it as an ebook but the unorthodox formatting meant the display wasn't quite how I wanted it and it was quite different for different ebook readers. Really, it was always meant to be a print book.

A while ago I tried to upload a for-print manuscript and #Draft2Digital kept giving me the same error message that the copyright page and the title page must be separate.

They were separate and no matter what changes I made, their software wouldn't accept it.

I tried more recently still to no avail, so I decided to delete the book entirely and try uploading the for-print manuscript only.

And it worked. No problems. Basically the software was having problems with the ebook file even though I wasn't using that for the print version.

It's not even all that an important book. I just enjoyed making it, that's all.

  13. News Summary: Libraries Challenge Big Five on E-book Pricing; Independent Bookstores Hit Highest Level since 1990s

How much should e-books cost? It's one of the most divisive questions of the past fifteen years or so (in our small corner of the world at least), right up there with perennials like pineapple on pizza. The sub-question of this wider question that caused so much angst just before Covid is how much libraries should pay for e-books. You will remember, I dare say, there was much talk for a while of metered usage, and anger at the limited licensing time covered by the purchase of an e-book.

  15. There's a clause in #Draft2Digital's publishing rules that they can remove anything they find objectionable, such as hate speech or promoting terrorism.

Yet in this day and age, anything can be classed as terrorism. So anything you might write that has any anti-establishment leanings can probably be censored or you could find yourself being visited by the police.

My last book is about resistance fighters, fighting an oppressive, genocidal regime. Certainly there are references in it to real life situations and the story involves sometimes violent resistance to the oppressors.

It's basically Star Wars, but with less-than-subtle references to real life imperialism.

But the way things are now, I think Star Wars is becoming too radical for the West.

  17. Writing up #Draft2Digital alternatives made me remember how much #Amazon KDP sucked as a self-publishing platform even before the AI slop. The only things it has going for it are the sheer simplicity of creating an eBook, like honestly, it's practically fool-proof, and the vast number of potential buyers. Everything else about it is atrocious. But the unfathomable number of people using it makes it hard to pass up as an indie author.

    Here's my list of alternatives:

  19. #ScribesAndMakers April 30:

What's a problem you solved in your creative work this month?

I guess I figured out where else to go after #Draft2Digital introduced fees for all the plebs who make less than $100/year with them.

I'll try with Ingram Spark and itch.io.

  21. #WritersCoffeeClub for April 30:

How was this month for you, in terms of writing?

Eh. I wrote an angry post about #Draft2Digital's new fees while still sick with the flu and a little later a guide for alternatives. I don't have any sexy escapism ready for publication due to the inconvenient flu and overall health being a little poor this month.
Hoping to deliver the sexy for #MerMay in old form 🧜‍♀️

  23. News on Draft2Digital and other avenues for publishers of erotica... Alternatives, etc. (I was surprised to learn that D2D bought Smashwords, btw, which I thought of as one of the last bastions of more-or-less sanity.

  25. Thinking out loud because I'm still frustrated.

To meet the $100 sales threshold on #draft2digital with the new fees, I would need to sell (give or take) 70 books on platforms that are not Amazon*

    Last year, I sold 0
    This year (so far): 2

    Got a bit to go...

  26. News Summary: Bookshop.org Sales Surge 55% to $70 Million; E-books Now 5% of Total Sales

We start the week with some good news that segues interestingly out of the news that many indie authors have found alarming at the end of last week. The indie corner of the internet has been filled with little other than discussion (much heated) of Draft2Digital's decision to introduce fees for new and low-activity accounts in the face (it claims) of a vast increase in artificially generated content.

  28. So #Draft2Digital have introduced a crap tax for authors whose books don't make at least $100 a year.

It's because of the influx of #AI garbage flooding their service.

So, thanks to AI garbage, self-published authors might have to pay a crap tax until their sales improve.

Looking on the bright side, it does give writers an incentive to get people to buy their books.
