Depending on the species, wild bees make their nest in hollow stems, in pre-existing cavities like old rodent nests or hollow tree trunks, in wood, or in tunnels in the soil. They might even nest in objects left in your yard!

(Managed honey bees nest in human-made wooden hives.)

Sweat bees are quite common here in Canada, and they are known to lick the sweat (salt) from people's skin. If this happens to you, feel lucky that you fed a sweat bee! Here is a sweat bee on a mint plant in our backyard.

Are these mini volcanoes? Are they giant anthills? They're bee nests!

Ground-nesting bees are solitary but tend to build their nests next to each other in "aggregations." If you find them in your yard, these bees are quite gentle and are likely pollinating plants nearby. (Photo: Alison Gillespie)

Most bee species are solitary ground-nesting bees that dig tunnels in soil and lay their eggs in underground chambers. Besides being pollinators, they are nature's mini excavators!

  6. Yesterday I kept getting an error when trying to post this, so I'm a day late. Oh well, it's never too late for a bee fact. πŸ˜β€‹

Using their mouthparts, leafcutter bees cut circles out of leaves and then use the circles to line their nests. (This does not cause lasting harm to the plants.) Some use flower petals instead of using leaf-circles.
