  1. So, in other news, my #bumblebee friends are back! I only sighted a few on the rhododendron, but that's more than what I've seen in the past few weeks! I managed to catch a photo of one in flight with full pollen sacs! There were lots of little green #SweatBees there as well, but they are so tiny, it's hard to get a photo of them (and my camera battery had died, so I had to use my cell phone).

  2. From my latest #photo gallery: 'In Formation' - two bees flying exactly parallel to one another, with a cluster of white flowers seemingly the target.

  4. One thing I have going for me is that sweat bees simply love to lick me. They land on me and run all up and down my limbs with their tongues out. (This probably means I sweat a lot.)

I love them. I feel like a Disney princess every time this happens.

  7. #Pollinator observations from the last few days. No #Bumblebees, but sighted lots of #CarpenterBees (not living in our house -- they have plenty of logs to reside in), #HumingbirdMoths, a few #Honeybees (from neighbor's hives), and some small bees (#Sweatbees). I know we had some Bumblebees as of last October. I hope they make a comeback, though I've noticed their numbers dwindling...

  12. Also, nothing like doing a little citizen science while you're out protesting. This little sweat bee landed on my sign and has now made their way to iNaturalist:

  17. It's #BeeFactFriday! 🐝❤️

Sweat bees are quite common here in Canada, and they are known to lick the sweat (salt) from people's skin. If this happens to you, feel lucky that you fed a sweat bee! Here is a sweat bee on a mint plant in our backyard.

  20. An orange-legged furrow bee (Halictus rubicundus) wiping some pollen off its face in Carl Schurz Park. These are a type of sweat bee, and the same species can be either solitary or eusocial. Not sure which this one is, but it was covered in pollen and having a blast in some sunflowers.

  21. A rare and cool find.

"This mysterious insect, described recently in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, was an exceedingly rare gynandromorph—an animal that is anatomically half male, half female—the first one ever identified in the species Megalopta amoena, a type of sweat bee found in Central and South America."
