  1. Northeastern North America might not have the lush colours of the tropics but I still think the metallic green sweat bees (_Agapostemon_) on the bright purple and saffron New England aster (_Symphyotrichum novae-angliae_) are just as fine to look at as any rainforest scene.

  2. Just learned that some bees forage at night. E.g., members of the genus Megalopta. And, sure enough, most of the pics on iNaturalist look like they're snapped in darkness with a flash. Here's link to one in Mexico. #halictidae #bees #pollinators #nocturnal inaturalist.org/observations/9

I don't know. Note that it was John Ascher, not I, who ID'd that bee!

Augochlora pura is common in my garden. That's what I expect to see. Augochlorella is a surprise. That's my only observation of that species anywhere.

I know that the tegula is important, but I don't know in what way. In my garden, I look at the eye notch, but that's not diagnostic.

  4. Yesterday I moved one of the many rotting logs in my yard into a raised bed so I can more easily photograph the insects that make nests inside decaying wood. It joins the pre-existing snail-shell arena, insect hotel, and bird bath. The first visitor arrived at the log within minutes. #InsectHotel #log #tree #halictidae #insects #garden

  5. Augochlura pura (Halictidae) in my garden today. I think she has plans on nesting in my terracotta strawberry planter even though it's not a rotting log, their usual choice. I'm going to go on a run, then see whether I can lure her into drinking some sweat. #SweatBee #augochlura #insects #bee #bees #hymenoptera #halictidae

Not sure what it is so will likely just wait for John Ascher (National University of Singapore) to find my observation on iNaturalist. I'm so grateful for IDers like him. #bees #inaturalist #hymenoptera #insects #dandelion #sweatbee #halictidae inaturalist.org/observations/2

  20. Many thanks to @giltay who gave me an old DSLR! I just took it out for a spin in the garden, on auto mode because the manual modes still scare me a little.

Here's a metallic green sweat bee (_Agapostemon cf. virescens_) getting photobombed by a hoverfly (family Syrphidae).

  22. Stopped by Christie Pits on my way back from a dentist appointment today. Wasn't really expecting to find much given how much foot traffic and how little "wild" space there is, but to my astonishment there were a few different kinds of bees making burrows in sandy patches on the sunny hillside!

There were fluffy white-and-black mining bees (skittish, hard to get photos) and smaller, more docile metallic olive-green sweat bees.

  25. @friesen5000
I get lots of Agapostemon in my garden. I'm sure they nest in my garden; I've yet to find where.

Augochlora pura is probably my favorite of the metallic Halictinae, for their perfect shiny green, and because I observe them nesting in the rotting logs I've placed in my garden for habitat.
