An unusual iNaturalist Observation of the Day. A Goldenrod Crab Spider (Misumena vatia) spotted in Canada. If it looks weird, that is because it is. As described in the observation, it is a gynandromorph, a spider with a mixture of female and male parts.

I had an enlightening time being shown behind the scenes at London's Natural History Museum today. Huge thanks to the brilliant Josh Luke Davis, science writer at NHM, and to Alessandro Giusti, senior curator of Lepidoptera, for showing me the Museum's collection of gynandromorph butterflies. Wow! 🦋💜🦋
I made sure to say hi to Chas . . .

I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend!✨
Lovely colour plate depicting gynandromorph specimens in the collections of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. Produced by German entomologist Friedrich Klug in 1829. 🦋 🐞

Meet the green honeycreeper, a bird that is half-female and half-male! This amazing creature has blue feathers on one side and green feathers on the other, making it a stunning sight to behold. It is only the second of its kind ever recorded, and the first in over a century. Learn more about this rare phenomenon and how it happens: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/incredibly-rare-half-male-half-female-bird-caught-on-camera/ar-AA1miu8x #birdwatching #gynandromorph #nature

The most likely explanation: apparently lobsters have an XX/XY sex det system. If the blue gene is a recessive and X-linked, then it is expressed on the male side, and if the original zygote was heterozygous, then "covered" on the female side. BUT there are lots of unknowns about lobster chromosomes.

I'd watch this #StarTrek #TOS episode.
"Captain, the tricorder readings show genetic similarity to the #bilateral #gynandromorph #cardinal on Earth."
"So, all this rampant sexism in their society is based on, what? Left side versus right side?"
"You'll have to smack some sense into 'em, Jim."
"There's no right way to hit a woman, Bones..."
"Guess you'll have to be careful what side you aim for then."

Wonderful to be back in #Oxford today! As ever, lots of great finds in the Bod including this lovely colour plate of a #gynandromorph Gouldian finch described by biologists F. A. E. Crew and S. S. Munro in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in June 1938.

A rare and cool find.
"This mysterious insect, described recently in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, was an exceedingly rare gynandromorph—an animal that is anatomically half male, half female—the first one ever identified in the species Megalopta amoena, a type of sweat bee found in Central and South America."
