  1. So, I can say that given the observations made by myself, my hubby and my neighbors, the bumblebees have made a HUGE comeback in #SouthernMaine this year (despite the drought)! There were very low #Bumblebee populations last year (more #CarpenterBees and #honeybees and a few smaller #NativeBees). A lot of us are #GardeningForPollnators and #GardeningWithoutChemicals , so I think that's helping!

  2. In other news, the air quality was much better in #Maine today (still not great -- listed as "Fair" rather than "Poor" or "Unhealthy"). Anyhow, I opened up the barn window and heard lots of buzzing coming from outside. I looked down to see TONS of bumblebees (and a few other bees) going to town on the #Burdock flowers (another "weed" that I let grow this year, knowing how much the bees love it). I grabbed my camera and managed to snap a nice close-up of a bumblebee pal and a stray honeybee (maybe from a hive down the road) mostly sharing a flower (there was plenty to go around, so I didn't see much aggression between them).

  3. Dusted off the camera today. It wasn't too hot, the sun was out, and my #bumblebee friends were digging the #WildHydrangea flowers! I'm glad I gave them more space and light last year -- it paid off this year!

  4. So, in other news, my #bumblebee friends are back! I only sighted a few on the rhododendron, but that's more than what I've seen in the past few weeks! I managed to catch a photo of one in flight with full pollen sacs! There were lots of little green #SweatBees there as well, but they are so tiny, it's hard to get a photo of them (and my camera battery had died, so I had to use my cell phone).

  5. @thebeeguy I've rescued quite a few bee friends. But thank you for all the information!

  6. The bees learning to fight off invasive #hornets

    9 February 2024
    Katherine Latham

"The buff-tailed #bumblebee, one of Europe's most common bumblebee species, is adapting to fight back – thanks to a remarkably successful defence strategy it already has in their evolutionary arsenal.

"The tactic is simple: when attacked, the bumblebees drop to the ground, taking the hornets down with them. This either causes the hornet to lose its grip, or the bee raises its sting and tussles until the hornet gives up.

"The buff-tailed bumblebee did not evolve alongside Asian hornets – their native predators include badgers, birds, wasps and spiders – so O'Shea-Wheller describes this as 'an evolutionary coincidence'.

" 'This defence that already works against their natural predators also works against the hornets,' he says. European honeybees, on the other hand, have no such 'co-evolved system' to protect themselves from these new predators."

  7. #SmilingHillFarm in the news -- for safely relocating #bees!

Hive with more than 40,000 bees removed from house at Smiling Hill Farm

    September 19, 2024

WESTBROOK, Maine β€” "The family that owns Smiling Hill Farm is doing its best to protect a #BeeColony that has occupied a farmhouse for decades.

"The Knight family said a hive with more than 40,000 bees grew within the walls of a home on their property.

"The farmhouse is in need of renovation but instead of killing the bees, the Knight family wanted to save the colony.

"'For sixty-plus years, there's been bees in this house and it might be longer than that. It might be seventy or eighty,' said Michael Knight.

"On Thursday, Andrew MacDonald of Bee Huggah came to Smiling Hill Farm to safely relocate the bees from the farmhouse.

"'I believe that these bees are worth saving for a number of different reasons,' MacDonald said. 'They have medicinal value and they pollinate our crops.'

"MacDonald moved the bees to a hive outside of the farmhouse."
