#Florida #WildlifeCorridor linking #StateParks would thwart #development
#LoxaLucie Headwaters Initiative aims to buy #HobeSound land for conservation.
by Timothy O'Hara, Jan. 2, 2026
"At a time when development pressure is pushing north into rural Martin County, conservation groups want to protect a wildlife corridor between two state parks in Hobe Sound.
"The Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative was founded to protect the ecologically important corridor between #AtlanticRidgePreserve State Park and #JonathanDickinson State Park and connect the #LoxahatcheeRiver and #SaintLucie rivers. That would create a preserve for #NativePlants and #wildlife species that would span about 70,000 acres.
"The public owns #Hapatiokee and #PalMar regional parks, but there are thousands of acres of privately owned land in natural conditions that are ripe for development, said Guardians of Martin County Executive Director Greg Braun, whose group is part of the initiative.
" 'If they can connect the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, we should be able to connect Jonathan Dickinson State Park to Atlantic Ridge Preserve State Park,' Braun told TCPalm."

Crime against wildlife is surging in Australia
Flogging off native animals and plants" Around the world, wildlife and environmental crime is surging. It is estimated to be the fourth largest organised transnational crime sector, and to be growing at a rate two to three times faster than the global economy."
"This is a considerable problem, because Australia has unique and endemic wildlife species, high extinction rates, and is a country that is difficult to police due to its sheer size and vast remote areas. Our new, Australia-first study addresses this knowledge gap."
"We don’t understand the full extent and impact of these crimes in Australia, but we do know they can be disastrous. Wildlife trafficking and illegal trade erodes biodiversity through the removal of native species from their habitats. It also fuels the spread of invasive species, parasites and diseases."
"Over half of the environmental crimes (61.3%) occurred in outer regional and remote areas of Australia. "

#Colorado - Residents celebrate game-changing agreement for crucial US nature area: 'My goal has always been to preserve'
by Misty Layne
Wed, December 17, 2025 at 11:00 AM"Land conservation is more important than ever, as changes in the climate and increased #urbanization have brought about habitat loss.
"According to Hoodline, one ranch owner in Colorado did their part to support land conservation while also securing the future of their 675-acre property through a significant donation that placed the property under a #ConservationEasement.
"A conservation easement is a legal agreement that permanently limits how landowners can use their land to protect its conservation value.
"#LegendTrailRanch in Northern Colorado is found in the Laramie Foothills region, an area targeted by the Larimer County Open Lands Master Plan as essential for land conservation. In particular, the ranch's proximity to U.S. Hwy 287 makes it a vital parcel of protected lands in Larimer County.
"Significant conservation work has already happened in the Laramie Foothills region. For example, Great Outdoors Colorado funded the Mountains to Plains Project in 2004, which was, at the time, the largest Great Outdoors Colorado grant of all time — an $11.6 million request plus an estimated local match totaling $13.7 million. Overall, through the years and various projects and partnerships, 140,000 acres of land in the Laramie Foothills have been protected.
"This protected land connects the plains to the mountains, providing a key corridor for #wildlife movement in the region, which is just one reason conservation of this area is so important. Additionally, current and future projects aim to collect #seeds to restore #Prairie land and manage invasive plants and #weeds, thereby protecting #NativeSpecies, conserving natural resources, and economically benefiting those living in the area.
"Legend Trail Ranch offers up working #agricultural lands, rock #outcroppings, and rolling grasslands for conservation. With the conservation easement, Legend Trail Ranch can not only continue using the land for growing hay, grazing cattle, and other agricultural uses, but also protect local #ecosystems, #biodiversity, wildlife habitats, and the land's incredibly scenic views.
"As Hoodline reported, the ranch's landowner, Cheryl Rennels, shared, 'My goal has always been to preserve the agricultural way of life I grew up in and currently enjoy. Partnering with Larimer County permanently conserves what I value: agriculture lifestyle, livestock, wildlife and the beauty of the Livermore Valley.' "

Humans profoundly reshaped mammal communities on a global scale.
"After farming began, just a handful of livestock species spread with humans and scrambled those natural boundaries, reshaping mammal communities worldwide...Large ungulates like horses and cows are important because they monopolize food resources wherever they are in high numbers...At the same time, many wild mammals went extinct, in each case following human arrival—not during a particular worldwide climate change episode."
"Post-extinction ecosystems have not been truly natural for the last 10,000 years or more, so national parks in the hardest-hit regions, such as Australia and the Americas, lack over half of the native large mammal species that would have been present if not for humans. Over the last 10,000 years or so, humans have overseen the wholesale replacement of native mammal communities with a very limited set of domesticated species."

How humans reshaped the animal world: Research traces 50,000 years of change
https://phys.org/news/2025-09-humans-reshaped-animal-world-years.html"These findings underscore how human-driven extinctions, agriculture and resource extraction profoundly reshaped mammal community structures. How we manage these interactions today will determine whether mammal communities become resilient or increasingly destabilized."

#Canada - Here's how you can make your #garden a safe and #biodiverse space for #urban #wildlife
by Ann Dale, Sabrina Careri, The Conversation
"Supporting biodiversity in your garden
"Together, we've created a series of free, fact-based guides to help people learn how to cultivate biodiversity and support for wildlife habitat in private gardens.
"This series currently includes four comprehensive booklets, each focusing on key aspects of biodiversity gardening:
- Yard Naturalization: A How-to Guide
- Myths & Misconceptions: Naturalized Gardens, Ticks, Mice, Rats & Other Pests
- Bird-Friendly Gardens: Supporting Bird Habitat in Every Season
- Good Garden Practices: Underrated Practices & Top Plant Picks."While there are plenty of great garden practices out there, these are five easy and impactful ways to boost biodiversity and cultivate a garden safe for urban wildlife, taken directly from our booklets.
"Use alternatives to pesticides"#Pesticides in your garden can harm beneficial insects and can be detrimental to the environment, wildlife and human health. Instead of using chemical-based pesticides, try natural alternatives like #biopesticides, #HorticulturalOils and #InsecticidalSoaps that can be just as effective.
"Likewise, attracting predatory insects and wildlife into your garden who will actively feed on the harmful pest is also an effective starting point as this is a process of pest-control that occurs naturally in healthy ecosystems.
"There are also DIY pesticides, such as sea salt spray, water-vinegar mixtures and coffee grounds.
"Decomposing plant litter, like fallen dead leaves, tree bark, needles and twigs, is an important component of maintaining soil health, nutrient cycling and biodiversity.
"By choosing to leave the leaves in your garden, you will support the variety of species who overwinter in them, from #bees and #caterpillars, to #butterflies, #spiders and more.
"Prioritize #pollinator-attractive plants"In addition to pollination, insects are beneficial for a variety of other reasons, including for pest control, seed dispersal and decomposition.
"The best way to attract insects largely depends on which insect you are trying to attract. But as a general rule, it is always a good practice to source plants locally and prioritize #NativeSpecies.
"Next best to native plants are benign ornamentals and non-natives. Cultivating a diverse range of flowers, especially native plants and herbs, promotes a resilient ecosystem. It also helps natives out-compete invasive species and to reverse the downward trends of mass species decline.
"Make your garden safe for birds
"#Birds contribute to healthy ecosystems: they pollinate plants, disperse seeds and prey on insects. Unfortunately, North American bird populations are experiencing a rapid decline due to habitat loss, degradation and other global pressures.
"Adopting bird-safe gardening practices offers a powerful way to combat these threats and support biodiversity conservation on a local scale. Beyond core habitat elements, additional practices can enhance the garden's appeal to birds.
"Organic gardening without pesticides or herbicides, keeping cats indoors, removing potential entanglement hazards and using bird-collision prevention markers on reflective surfaces can not only attract birds, but also ensure their safety as well.
"Advocate for biodiversity
"Although there's been a growing movement toward more biodiversity-supporting practices, outdated municipal bylaws and enforcement policies continue to limit the potential of habitat gardens.
"These disputes over the scope and application of bylaws have brought attention to various legal contradictions and outcomes that negatively impact progress on biodiversity recovery, all the while undermining and negating related environmental objectives on private land.
"By advocating and encouraging your municipal leaders to adopt science-based biodiversity-supportive bylaws, you help to establish the legal frameworks and political agendas that directly impact long-term ecological health and promote sustainable development and the regeneration of biodiversity."

#FalmouthMaine! Saturday, May 10th! Pollinator Parade Celebrates 10 Years!
by Molly Woodring, May 7, 2025
"Local families, including pollinator enthusiasts of all ages, will gather at #MaineAudubon’s #GilslandFarm on Saturday, May 10, 10 am to 1 pm, for the 10th annual Pollinator Parade and Picnic, to honor the winged species essential to our #ecosystems.
"Since 2015, Birth Roots and Maine Audubon have partnered to raise awareness about the vulnerability of the pollinator species that are critical to ecosystem health and our food systems, and the ways that people can support pollinator habitat. Many pollinator populations are in decline, and Pollinator Parade addresses this serious concern with a dose of family-friendly whimsy: families dressed as Monarch Butterflies can play and celebrate together, and then take home a milkweed plant that will support the real Monarchs due to arrive in Maine later this summer. That’s hundreds of new native plants spread across the landscape and even more photos shared that feature adorable costumes and a call to action, all before naptime.
"The event is inspired by festivals that honor the Monarch’s arrival in Mexico each fall, at the southern tip of the 3,000 mile migration that butterflies have completed annually for an estimated 20,000 years. The colorful parade, which starts at 11:30 am, invites young children, parents, and grandparents to embody a myriad of beautiful bugs, birds, and flowers—while calling attention to the urgent need for habitat protection and restoration.
" 'The #PollinatorParade is more than a picnic, parade, or dance party—it’s a call to action,' says Leah Deragon, Birth Roots’ co-founder and Director of Mission and Impact. 'We hope to capture the public’s imagination and inspire hearts and minds to take steps toward preserving pollinators for our grandchildren’s grandchildren.'
"Organizers aim to generate more substantive conversations about policies and the everyday actions people can take to care for pollinators—from planting #NativeSpecies and pollinator-friendly gardening, to reducing #pesticide use.
"This festival is one of hundreds like it nationwide, a growing movement since the late ‘90s to recognize and prioritize the role pollinators play to sustain all life.
"The Pollinator Parade is a ticketed event to buffer the impact on the Gilsland Farm #wildlife sanctuary during soft springtime soil. Gilsland Farm Audubon Center is located at 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth." [See below for registration link]

Biodiversity focused design protocols in urban planning and development
by Peter Miles, Mar 30, 2022
"The cooling benefits of the greening of urban areas probably need little introduction and are widely known to help improve human physical and psychological health.
"Biodiversity Sensitive Urban Design (BSUD), is a protocol with the aim of transforming urban areas to have increased habitat and food resources for native species and ecological communities.
"Biodiversity, or loss of biodiversity, has become an often-used descriptive term.
"A shortening of biological diversity, it refers to the sum of genetic diversity in an area. With one measure being the species diversity, ie, the number of different species.
"Speciation is the process of creating new species, and this leads to an increase in biodiversity.
"Urban biodiversity generally refers to the remnant of plant and animal species left after the impact of developing a built environment, eg buildings, and roads.
"By attempting to understand the changes caused by urbanization, and what was previously living in an area, from remnants, we can try and predict revegetation species and species density, and animal requirements to attract birds and animals from surrounding remnant habitats.
"BSUD is a new approach to on-site biodiversity conservation and restoration in urban areas (Garrard et al., 2018), to encourage an increase in biodiversity, to be larger in area, including in much of the urban matrix, and together with help from engaged residents leading to an overall biodiversity increase."
[...]
"Biodiversity Sensitive Urban Design is a useful tool in establishing more biodiversity in urban areas with 5 main principles:
- Maintain and introduce habitat by revegetation with local species.
- Enable spread of plants and animals, eg by allowing bare soil for burrowing insects and seed germination, control of weeds, and removal of fences.
- Minimize threats and human disturbances, eg herbicide drift, foot traffic, off-leash dogs.
- Allow natural ecological processes, maybe as simple as letting dead logs remain, through to periodic burning.
- Provide for an increase in positive human and natural interaction, eg bird hides, but also no access islands, and no dog areas (Kirk et al., 2021)."

Non-native plants and animals expanding ranges 100-times faster than native species
"An international team of scientists has recently found that non-native species are expanding their ranges many orders of magnitude faster than native ones, in large part due to inadvertent human help. Even seemingly sedentary non-native plants are moving at three times the speed of their native counterparts in a race where, because of the rapid pace of climate change and its effect on habitat, speed matters."
"To survive, plants and animals need to be shifting their ranges by 3.25 kilometers per year just to keep up with the increasing temperatures and associated climactic shifts—a speed that native species cannot manage without human help."
"We know that the numbers of invasive plant species are increasing exponentially worldwide...Plant nurseries are exacerbating the climate-driven spread of invasives and that confronting invasives is one of the best ways to prepare for climate change. What we wanted to find out is how fast both native and non-native species are moving right now, and how far could they go."
"Essentially...there's no chance for native species to keep up with climate change without human help...We need to seriously consider and begin implementing assisted migration"
And stop selling 'ornamental horticultural' invasive species.
And of course stop polluting our atmosphere by burning fossil fuels.>>
