Natural forest regrowth offers a lower-cost path to climate and #biodiversity goals

August 20, 2026Excerpt: "As nations race to restore #ecosystems and curb #ClimateChange, research has shown that letting nature do the work is a cost-effective, viable solution. A study from the University of Queensland and the University of Newcastle found that natural forest regeneration delivered substantial carbon and #biodiversity benefits and could be up to 96% cheaper than traditional #TreePlanting programs. The work is published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.
"School of the Environment Ph.D. candidate Jiaqi Li said the team mapped how the costs and benefits of natural regeneration varied across the tropics.
" 'Nature is a great gardener. Sometimes we just need to get out of its way while providing a bit of support,' Li said.
" 'For tree planting, you need to purchase seeds and hire workers or recruit volunteers to plant and manage them, which is costly.
" 'For natural regeneration, people just need to check the land for #InvasiveSpecies and remove them, make sure there are adequate seed sources, provide protection from fire, #GrazingAnimals and humans, and then it is mostly self-sufficient.
" 'In many cases of natural regeneration, studies show that you can end up with a forest that could store more carbon and is more #biodiverse than a planted forest.' "

That's why TNC is linking forests, prairies, wetlands and rivers across the Midwest so wildlife can move, adapt and thrive.
"What Is a Wildlife Corridor? Why Are They Important?
"#Habitat Crridors can be interconnected land-based environments, such as #forests and #prairies, as well as #rivers and other freshwater passages that allow aquatic species to move freely. These healthy, #biodiverse areas are beneficial for people too, as they can help reduce flood risk to communities and provide more recreational opportunities in nature.
"However, the Midwest region is highly fragmented. #Habitats are subdivided across different landowners, and many are highly degraded.
"To address this, TNC serves as our own type of corridor, coordinating protection and #stewardship efforts across properties owned by many different partners. Through these collaborations, we help secure funding to connect science with #conservation on the ground and in the water.
"Our work includes large-scale #HabitatRestoration projects that create and improve pathways, like our #CoastalRepair efforts in #SanduskyBay, #DamRemoval efforts in Southern #Indiana and our prescribed fire work in Southern #Illinois."

"McCarthy said, 'They've been documented archeologically to have had a presence here for at least thirty-five hundred years.... There's a bio-regional perspective that considers all the relations: the #insects, the #grasses, the #trees, the #eelgrass, the #birds, the critters that roam these woods — if you really want to speak for Sears Island, it's incumbent, not just for poets and photographers and old hippies, it's incumbent for all of us to be mindful of all that is happening here.'
"McCarthy said he gets why the island is an attractive place for development. 'We're in a time where wind energy is important,' he said. 'We need to find green sources of power, but the narrowness of that human perspective needs to be challenged.'
"Both McCarthy and Lawless join the group #FriendsOfSearsIsland in maintaining that #MackPoint is better situated for development.
"Even though 600 acres of the island are protected by a conservation easement, industrial disruption to the peaceful island could lead to #environmental impacts that may not be fully realized until after development, according to McCarthy."
