FTTDK: I had bariatric surgery 5 weeks ago and got some bad complications. 2 weeks in hospital, 2 weeks of intense recovery at home. Last week was better.
I'm documenting this more on my FB feed because it's for my fam and old friends, but I would post here if there's interest.

🏥 When a person has weight loss surgery, their actual weight loss journey can be hard to predict as it's not linear. 👩💻 IMI project SOPHIA used #ArtificialIntelligence to develop an online tool that allows patients and doctors to predict weight loss over the 5 years following #BariatricSurgery.

Me and my stomach have been doing that gastric bypass patient dance all day today. We’re having trouble getting along. We need to work together but today we’re causing problems for each other.
I have eaten three meals. Each meal came with a stomach problem of varying degrees.
I had a protein bar for breakfast. I went a little too fast and felt that blocked/stuck feeling. It wasn’t bad enough to become nausea or to produce large amounts of extra saliva that I have to spit out. I tried gagging it up but nothing came. I had to pause eating for about half an hour before the blockage was gone and then I was able to finish.
I had a burger (cooked on the grill) and some french fries for lunch. The burger went down without any issues. The fries though. I only had about four of them and I should have stopped at three. I felt a little blocked again. I think I was going too fast this time as well. It was never bad enough to require any spitting up. I don’t know how long it took to pass, but it wasn’t long. As soon as I declared myself done with lunch I was off to my father’s so it was probably a couple of hours before I even thought about eating or drinking anything else.
I had a big piece of chicken and a little bit of white rice for dinner. Well, it was big for me. about three ounces. The chicken went down fine. The rice felt a little off. I only had two small fork fulls. I was okay afterward though. I stopped in time to avoid any problems. When I finished dinner I was a smidge below my daily protein goal. I waited about 20 minutes and then had a little tiny protein bar snack. It went bad. I think this time I took too big a bite and it got stuck for real. I gagged up a tiny bit of it and have been spitting out saliva for about half an hour now.
So there we have it. All summed up. Three meals, three stomach issues. Yippee. My doctor told me that in almost every case when there is a stomach problem after eating it’s really the patient’s fault. In all three cases this was my fault. It actually makes me feel better knowing that. If it’s something I did rather than something going on with my new stomach, then it’s something I can control.
220 pounds lost since the surgery. Yeah, these sort of things are 100% worth it. Absolutely.

With the effectiveness of GLP-1 medications finally treating the underlying disorder (a GLP disregulation) bariatric surgery (like gastro bypass) looks like the dark ages. Might as well be drilling holes in their head.
I kinda feel bad for the people who were convinced to get it, having a perminantly deformed and broken digestive system and not fixing the underlying hunger issues...

Tonight my dinner was the universally accepted dinner for people with a bad cold. Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup. It was lovely, though it did bring up a question for me.
I am less than two months away from the two year anniversary of my gastric bypass surgery. Things are going well. I haven’t had dumping syndrome once and I have lost over 200 pounds. Huzzah, babie. Life is good.
There are rules that those of us who have gone through the full gastric bypass have to follow. Two in particular. First, if you have something to drink you need to wait 15 minutes before you can have something to eat. Second, similarly, if you have something to eat you have to wait a whole hour before you have something to drink.
Easy peezy, lemon squeezy.
What about soup though? I had a great big bowl of soup tonight and it was delicious and it cleared my stuffy head a little. As I was lapping up the broth I had a moment where I questioned everything. I just ate the chicken and the noodles, should I wait an hour before I drink the broth? I had a spoonful of broth as my first taste of dinner, should I have waited 15 minutes before I ate the chicken and the noodles? Putting it simply, does soup count as a food or a drink? I was lead to believe that one meal could not count as both, so which is it? Should soup be off limits? I chose to count it as food but is that an incorrect choice?
One other, unrelated, rule that I have to follow in this post surgery world is no alcohol. Does that mean I cannot have a dose of NyQuil to help combat my cold symptoms and to help me sleep at night? I am pretty sure NyQuil lives on the no fly list for that reason. I was going to have some tonight but I have decided to error on the side of caution and skip it.
Oh, what a fascinating new world is this post surgery life. Fascinating indeed.

#Introduction #2!
Like many, my outside interests are many! I #read voraciously (I'll surpass my goal of 75 books this year easily), I'm taking #swimming lessons to properly know how to swim laps, I'm also interested in #tennis lessons. I walk a lot. I had #bariatricsurgery #weightlosssurgery six months ago and I'm down 55 lbs from my highest weight. I have another 60 left to go. I split my time between #Michigan and #Kentucky but we hope to move back to #Michigan permanently.

CW: weight loss
296.3 pounds, down 1.3 since yesterday, down 243.7 pounds total. It's clear that the weight loss is slowing down but I still have some really good days.
I decided to go to work today in the flesh. I must be feeling much much better as I was walking up the escalator on my way to work without even thinking about it. I wouldn't have been able to do that last year at this time. Things like that have so much more meaning than the bare numbers.
I found out that a former coworker of mine just had bariatric surgery herself back in December and seems to be progressing well. I lost more weight in this past year than she was at her heaviest, which was a mind-blowing thing to hear her say.
Skipping this morning's workout as I know I'm going to get way more activity during my commute to work and just running around the office all day. It's barely 9:15am and I've already beat my step goal for the day.
Stay on the path to what you want. Even if you don't take any steps forward in a day, as long as you are at least pointed in the right direction, you're winning. Keep it up!

298.6 pounds today, the first real drop in the last two weeks, where I've been stuck at 300.
I think another 10-15 pounds lost would put me under 40 BMI and I would no longer be considered morbidly obese. Let's see if I can manage to squeak this out before my 1 year surgery anniversary.
241.4 pounds lost in 11 months. It's never too late for you to lose weight or improve your life if you devote yourself to it. Nothing about me is special. If I can do this, so can you.

My partner, Gabrielle, had gastric sleeve surgery a little over a week ago to correct some very serious health issues she's been experiencing for -- at this point -- literally years. She just posted the first of what she plans to be a 10-part series talking about it in an unpolished, verbal diary format.

Wasn't too long ago that the blue bar was completely full. Barely noticable now. Plateau surpassed as I've dropped another 2 pounds since yesterday and am now at 304.1lbs.
I'm in striking distance of the goal. Nothing can stop me.

CW: weight loss
Haven't really been posting about weight loss recently as... well, I haven't really been losing weight. I had stabilized around the 310lbs mark for a little while. That's not surprising as when I got my #BariatricSurgery it was expected that I would lose about 80% of my excess weight in the first year, which we calculated would put me at about 300 pounds and I'm fairly close to that, so it's not a surprise.
However, I woke up and had a bit of a shock looking at the scale this morning as it suddenly says 306.2lbs. I've lost 4 pounds in a day.
Been doing my workout routine 2 times daily along with shoveling the large amount of snow we've been receiving the last few days has kept me physically active.
I've likely been too restrictive with my eating as the few times I've gone past my self-imposed limits, I've suffered no ill effects or weight gain.
I suppose hitting 300lbs before January 28th is still possible after all, but it's more of a stretch goal at this point. 300lbs by March 8th is my real goal to keep an eye on.
If you read this, I appreciate it. Hope you're enjoying a relaxing Sunday.

@twg I had a massive blood clot about 2 1/2 years ago. Despite being over 500 pounds, my vitals were all perfect. Normal blood sugar, 120/80 blood pressure, no diabetes. This blood clot happened because I fell at a friend’s house 3 years ago and I guess it finally moved. I had no energy anymore because the clot was stopping my blood from getting properly oxygenated. I couldn’t stay on my feet for more than 2-3 minutes at a time. My doctors explained it wasn’t because of my weight and said if I had this problem at 100 pounds, I would have the same problems.
While in the hospital for two weeks getting treated for the blood clot, they asked me if I considered weight loss surgery. I said yes, but the waiting list is crazy long, like 5 years or so. They told me because I am young and in such good health generally that I would be a perfect candidate and would be fast tracked near the top of the list. A week after leaving the hospital, I had my first appointment with my surgeon. A year later, I was called for the surgery but I had to postpone due to Quebec’s health insurance taking forever to process my renewal. 6 months later, they opened me up, cut out 80% of my stomach and gave me a new diet I should follow.
I got very lucky to get so high up on the waiting list, a second chance at life and I didn’t want to screw that up. But more importantly than that, I wanted it for myself, and that’s really what the key was. The surgery gives you a new and far smaller stomach, however it is you that controls what goes into it and you can easily stretch that back out and fuck everything up.
So for me, the secret really came down to “do I want this cake, this food, this whatever more than I want to keep my progress?” And each and every time, it’s been my progress that I have put in priority. I wasn’t trying to lose weight to make my wife happy or to stick around longer to be with my son. For once in my life, I was doing something I wanted for me. You have to want it for yourself so much that you are willing to make a huge change in lifestyle to make it happen, and I have. There’s nothing I’ve done that’s special or different or that you cannot do. If losing weight is something you want, you have to make it your priority in life and put aside anything that would derail that priority.
I eat between 500-900 calories per day (and am under doctor supervision on that). I’m not allowed to eat and drink at the same time as that will cause the food to expand in your stomach and potentially screw up the surgery. No soft drinks for the same reason. No sugar, no breads, little fat. As much protein as I can get, because when your body goes through the operation and this strict a calorie restriction, it will feed off of your fat and muscle and you need to eat the protein to retain your muscle mass.
My diet right now consists mainly of chicken breast, sugar free Gatorade Zeros, 30g protein drinks. I try to get in about 70-100g of protein daily as my nutritionist told me to. This is because I have an exercise routine that I do, about 25 minutes two to three times daily.
Ultimately, even if you don’t go the same route I did, what keeps you on track is your own drive and desire. Doing it because you want it for yourself. And as hard as it is for me to pass up pizza or fries or whatever else I used to eat, I’m at a point now where I don’t even think about it because I know I’d be flushing the past 9 months of hard work away.
Do it for you. If I can do it, there’s nothing stopping you from doing it either. (And do not follow my diet without consulting a doctor - it is specifically for me because of the bariatric surgery and could be harmful to anyone that has not had the surgery themselves.)
If you might be interested in getting #BariatricSurgery for yourself and want to see what it might be like, I’ve uploaded the documentation for the pre-surgery liquid diet and a manual describing both what you should be doing after surgery and what to expect when going through it for you here: https://cloud.zerojay.com/s/BariatricSurgery
If you want to talk more or need support, you let me know. It’s never a problem. (Gee, this 5000 character limit sure comes in handy sometimes, eh?)
