On 20 Mar 2026 at ~20:45 UTC, detection telemetry observed a rapid compromise of multiple npm packages attributed to TeamPCP. The campaign, labeled CanisterWorm, leverages a three-stage architecture: a Node.js postinstall loader, a persistent Python backdoor, and an Internet Computer (ICP) canister serving as a decentralized dead-drop C2 for rotating binary payloads. Reported scope includes 28 packages in @EmilGroup, 16 in @opengov and several additional single-package compromises.
Technical breakdown
• Loader and propagation: The initial component is a postinstall JavaScript payload (deploy.js) that extracts npm tokens, resolves usernames, enumerates publishable packages within a scope, bumps patch versions and publishes the malicious package across the scope. Observers report propagation of 28 packages in under 60 seconds.
• Persistence and disguise: The payload decodes an embedded base64 Python script and writes it to ~/.local/share/pgmon/service.py, then creates a systemd user service named pgmon and enables Restart=always. The artifact naming (pgmon, pglog, .pg_state) appears intended to blend with PostgreSQL tooling.
• C2 and remote control: An ICP canister hosted on Internet Computer mainnet returns a URL that points to a binary payload. The canister controller can swap that URL to rotate binaries remotely without modifying the implant on infected hosts, providing a decentralized, censorship-resistant dead-drop.Behavioral details
• Sandbox evasion: The implant sleeps for ~5 minutes before initial beaconing and polls at ~50-minute intervals thereafter.
