There are a family of stable solutions for putting a crystalline beam in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Booster accelerator, because angular momentum about the vertical axis can be freely chosen within a range. The videos below show this for several different values, the top six of which stay at a low temperature (<20mK). Changing how fast the bunch spins actually changes its shape as shown in the vertical plots afterwards.
-
The bunch rotates by 0.495 times for each turn, which is weird (normal beams are once per turn). But also if you jump two turns at a time, diffusion of particles between the quadrants is visible.

Turns out it's quite practical to put crystalline beams into one of Brookhaven National Laboratory's existing #accelerators, if you adjust the magnet settings. (Paper below to be presented at IPAC'26).
Normally we put "charged plasma", structured like a gas, into accelerators, but this bunch behaves like a slightly-molten liquid. Solid structure for the most part, but occasionally the ions swap places, maybe like tar or molasses.

Got a simulation running over the weekend, should do 45ms (>5000 turns around the ring) in about 64 hours. Unless there's a power cut. #physics #accelerators

One thing AI is pretty decent at is digging out references for similar prior work to a modern PDF. For instance this book on potential theory including a section on ellipsoids. #physics #accelerators

The orbital datacenter idea seems to hinge on the end product (data) being low mass and easy to ship to Earth. So it seems that orbital antimatter factories might eventually be worthwhile. #physics #accelerators

Our collaboration with Stony Brook Radiation Oncology on Dejan Trbojevic's medical FFA accelerator design has now produced a paper: "Developing Bragg-peak FLASH proton irradiator using permanent magnet synchrotron" in the Journal of Radiosurgery & SBRT. The link is provided below, although not everyone outside medicine has a subscription to this! #physics #accelerators

To approximate the expected number of multi-way collisions, I used a simple physical model where nuclei are spheres with density 2.5e17 kg/m^3 and they interact if the centre of one goes within another. Then in the code below I work out a "volume fraction" of the focal ellipsoid that is filled and an "area fraction" that is filled in 2D projection seen from the side with largest area.
#accelerators #physics -
Depending on how stable the intermediate products are, you can also get chained collisions within the bunch diameter. #physics #accelerators
3-way collisions are usually only seen inside the cores of stars and, if there are super-heavy elements yet to be found, this may be a way of making them. -
Last week I looked inside Brookhaven National Laboratory's tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. The platform in the middle is called the terminal and can be raised to 15 million volts while surrounded by insulating SF6 gas (unusual to see an accelerator large enough to climb inside!) I wanted to see if there was room for an ultra-cold ion source, which could create nanometre-scale ion beams once accelerated by the Tandem. #physics #accelerators

Basin-hopping optimisation of a particle beam transfer line with six different energies in it. #physics #accelerators Something like this might be required for the 22GeV CEBAF energy upgrade at Jefferson Lab, to join the arcs to the linac where all the beams are in the same pipe.

Doing a first assembly and fit test of ion trap's next configuration. This time, the electron beam is going through the trap and can be switched on and off rapidly via deflection electrodes and a small hole. The blue plastic is modelling the Micro-Channel Plate that is still in storage vacuum. #physics #accelerators

Simulation of a long bunch breaking up into solitons in the BNL booster synchrotron. #accelerators #physics This required setting focussing magnets to much weaker than normal and starting with a dense, high space-charge bunch. Doing this experiment in practice could be a precursor to crystalline beams, as when Coulomb crystals are put in place of the solitons here, they heat up by less than 1 Kelvin/second.

Space charge solitons forming in a simulation of the BNL booster (with unusual magnet settings). #accelerators #physics I was trying to figure out if the stability of 3D crystalline bunches I'd found was because they were solitons and it appears to be the case.

3-day week this week. Finished a conference paper, reviewed a paper, and did some error studies of the crystalline beam in a ring. It can go 25mm off axis and bounce around, not heating up much, but more sensitive to its internal velocity distribution. #physics #accelerators

Just finished the paper to go with my COOL'25 talk on crystalline beams. There are some rings in which a Coulomb crystal can make 20000+ turns without cooling. #physics #accelerators

Energy that would normally go to waste inside powerful #particle #accelerators could be used to create valuable #medical isotopes, scientists have found.

#accelerators #physics Rectangular bends are OK, horizontal tune 0 (but different path lengths). Sector bends are a complete disaster! But an in-between one gives you roughly equal path lengths and a horizontal tune of 1.

Today I presented a talk at COOL'25 workshop, including these simulations of a ring that can store a three-dimensional Coulomb crystal for 1/16 of a second, or more than 24000 turns. The crystal stays solid and bunched without cooling or RF. #accelerators #physics

Will be going to the COOL'25 workshop on beam cooling at Stony Brook University next week. Looks like a very interesting set of talks: https://indico.jacow.org/event/98/timetable/#20251027.detailed

I am looking for an Amiga 2000 CPU accelerator that features a physical enable/disable switch.
Anyone have one sitting around they're looking to sell? I'm using a 68020 accelerator now, so anything would be faster.
