  1. After lengthy and somewhat casual searching, I've found and purchased (eBay) an accelerator with (critically) a hardware disable for my Amiga 2000, a GVP G-Force 030 with 40MHz 68030/882.

It just occurred to me that, oddly, this will be the first 68030 that I've ever had in the house.

    68000, 68010, 68020, 68040, 68060 - yes, but never a 68030.

(Currently using an A2620 14MHz 68020/882/851 in the CPU slot.)

  3. Quick update: I dug out an old file which was just the crystalline beam stored in the BNL booster with no acceleration. Its heating behaviour is the green line, which doesn't take off as fast as the accelerated ones. It will still eventually melt without a cooling system in place, but it looks (from the slope) that the accelerated beams could last longer if I fix the angular momentum spin-up issue that adding the RF is causing. #physics #accelerators

  5. This might be the answer for what I've been trying to do - but not quite as I envisioned. Apparently this PiStorm68K v1.8 Special Edition hasn't been fully tested in Amigas, but it's designed for the minimig. It keeps a 68000 on board w/ physical switch to fall back on.

Debating getting this for my Amiga 2000.

Anyone out there using one of these in an Amiga? (I'm looking for an affordable Amiga 2000 accelerator that can fall back to 100% base 68000 mode.)

  7. I have an Amiga 2000 and would like to add a PiStorm accelerator to it - but I want to slot it into the CPU slot on the motherboard with a CPUslot-to-64pinDIP adapter, several of which are currently available out there for purchase.

Critically, I want to be able to disable the PiStorm sitting in the CPU slot for 100% fallback to the original 68000 on the motherboard.

Is anyone aware of a CPU slot adapter capable of fully disabling the CPU in the slot?

I see this unit which has a DIP switch for E-clock and _BOSS which, I believe, control what I'm trying to do. I suppose I could remove the jumper and replace with cabled switches. Any issue with this?

  9. In the final parts of this graph, the velocity gradients get more equal, since angular momentum is mr^2omega and r is increasing from the crystal vaporising, while omega has the same units as the velocity gradients, it gets scaled down. #physics #accelerators

  11. I think this graph shows why my crystalline beam melted. It plots velocity gradients dvy/dz and dvz/dy (y is horizontal here, z is longitudinal) during the acceleration ramp. If these are unequal, the beam has angular momentum. I've found the standard RF acceleration won't change dvz/dy because it gives a constant speed boost irrespective of transverse position, so the two lines get out of sync and the crystal starts spinning.

  13. Amiga people: Do any of the new accelerators that work with the Amiga 2000 allow fallback to the original 68000 by way of a PHYSICAL SWITCH or jumper?

I want an accelerator that can be disabled (without using soft-menus to control the state) so that the Amiga is able to fall back to its 100% exact original 68000 state, which some demos require to run properly, due to cycle-precise coding.

I have an A2620 68020 accelerator in my NTSC A2000, but it does not have a physical switch (just a soft menu) and the state gets lost when I juggle that soft menu and the need to also use Degrader to reboot into PAL mode.

Apparently the A2620 can be modified to add a switch, but it's beyond my abilities.

    Many thanks.

  15. Correcting the initial conditions for the crystalline beam acceleration simulation delayed the onset of heating a bit but it still went through the solid->liquid->gas phase transition as you can see on the temperature plots. The peak in relative heating rate (dT/dt)/T as a function of T is known in the literature.

  17. Caught the solid->liquid->gas transition in this crystalline beam simulation. I also corrected my initial conditions since the last one, so you can see some "adiabatic shrinkage" while it's still accelerating in the solid state. BUT it still melts, so I think I'm not following the stable region correctly for higher energies. #accelerators #physics

  19. I think this is because I need to tweak how the magnetic fields scale up as the energy changes. Right now they're all exactly proportional to beam momentum but in this case, with electrostatic repulsion also affecting the optics, some things might not scale with momentum.

  21. I wanted a simple but smooth electromagnetic field model of an RF cavity for use in particle tracking. I didn't want to design the whole cavity yet, so assumed a particular on-axis field function and then used Maxwell's equations to give a power series in radius. (I loosely based this on a similar note for magnet fields that I wrote in 2013).

My first such project. Also, a first for my company.

    Will keep you all posted.

  25. When I visited the European Spallation Source last week I was lucky enough to see some of the workings of the rotating segmented tungsten target, which will be hit by initially 3MW and eventually 5MW of proton beam. The target 'wheel' hangs from the shaft in the video, which you can see rotating to align a different one of 32 sectors with each 14Hz proton pulse, taking just over two seconds per rotation. #physics #accelerators

  27. On the GANIL facility tour last Friday I saw a separated sector #cyclotron (too big for the frame but you can see one sector's magnet in green) and a beamline where they were trying to make super-heavy elements by colliding a mid-mass ion beam with heavy element target.

  39. There are a family of stable solutions for putting a crystalline beam in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Booster accelerator, because angular momentum about the vertical axis can be freely chosen within a range. The videos below show this for several different values, the top six of which stay at a low temperature (<20mK). Changing how fast the bunch spins actually changes its shape as shown in the vertical plots afterwards.

  41. The bunch rotates by 0.495 times for each turn, which is weird (normal beams are once per turn). But also if you jump two turns at a time, diffusion of particles between the quadrants is visible.

  43. Turns out it's quite practical to put crystalline beams into one of Brookhaven National Laboratory's existing #accelerators, if you adjust the magnet settings. (Paper below to be presented at IPAC'26).
Normally we put "charged plasma", structured like a gas, into accelerators, but this bunch behaves like a slightly-molten liquid. Solid structure for the most part, but occasionally the ions swap places, maybe like tar or molasses.
