  1. At long last -- my Amiga 2000 has a CPU speed switch!

    ( Fast and Faster )

    A "new" 40MHz 68030/882 accelerator with 8MB 32-bit FAST RAM is slotted in and wired with a switch, there on the front. Base 68000 system has 8MB 16-bit FAST RAM, a respectable fallback for cycle-exact OCS/ECS demos.

  2. All issues resolved. The 40MHz 68030 accelerator is installed and working in the A2000.

    Here's a victory video of Black Lotus' 2019 OCS/ECS Amiga scenedemo 'Eon'. I am unsure if anyone will get the irony of this video, but the spark of that irony is what motivated this CPU upgrade from the Commodore 68020 board I was running before.

  3. Cracked open the Amiga 2000 and am moving from a 14MHz 68020 to a 40MHz 68030, and increasing FAST RAM in both 16-bit Zorro II space and 32-bit extended space.

    The "new" accelerator is a GVP G-Force 030 (Impact A2000-030 Combo Series II) with 8MB 32-bit FAST RAM and 68882 FPU.

    This board has a jumper allowing it to be fully disabled, which I will bring out to a toggle switch (for cycle-exact 68000 scenedemos).

  4. After lengthy and somewhat casual searching, I've found and purchased (eBay) an accelerator with (critically) a hardware disable for my Amiga 2000, a GVP G-Force 030 with 40MHz 68030/882.

    It just occurred to me that, oddly, this will be the first 68030 that I've ever had in the house.

    68000, 68010, 68020, 68040, 68060 - yes, but never a 68030.

    (Currently using an A2620 14MHz 68020/882/851 in the CPU slot.)

  6. All of a sudden I am looking for a 68030 accelerator for the Amiga 2000. There are a few modern ones in different states of readiness, it seems.

    Can anyone point me to something solid? (Older would be fine - but I see none on offer in the regular places.)

    Update: Has anyone tried the new Dicke Olga board? It has a disable switch which I require.

  7. I am considering the configuration of my Amiga 2000 w/ 68020 accelerator... I would appreciate opinions from drivers of slotted Amigas, here.

    I have an Amiga 2000 with SCSI + SCSI2SD, 4MB 16-bit FAST RAM, 1MB CHIP RAM, etc. It also has an A2620 68020 accelerator (14MHz) with 2MB 32-bit FAST RAM which is meager, but makes things noticeably faster on the Workbench. Most of what I do on this is watch demos and play games, though. All I do on desktop, really, is use AmiTCP and ncftp to bring files over and run IMP sometimes.

    I recently downloaded the Amiga demo 'Downslope' and noticed it's less fluid / smooth with the accelerator enabled. I've seen this before here and there, but assumed that the accelerator was doing my a solid in demos - giving a bit of a boost.

    I commented about this in the Pouet 'Downslope' thread and the developer came in and commented,

    "Accelerators often introduce an asynchronicity between CPU and chip memory, which adds to chip access latency.
    This can be worsened by the occurrance of many interrupts, which can cause additional strain on memory on a higher CPU.
    If we are unlucky, not even the much faster execution time of the higher CPU can make up for the additional latencies and strain on chip memory.
    It's a matter of focus on the target. There are side effects on higher CPUs which are difficult to anticipate, and usually you have only a limited number of machines for testing."

    This makes sense, I suppose. Is this common? Are people with '030, '040, '060 accelerators having a lesser experience with demos due to CHIP RAM latency than with base '000? Certainly in some scenarios the more powerful CPU helps hugely for demos and games alike - I've seen this on my '020. But, yes -- demos are the most tightly coded of all Amiga apps, certainly. To the metal, etc.

    So I am wondering now, should I remove the accelerator to get the most out of OCS/ECS demos on the system? Yes, I can disable the accelerator with a right mouse click at reboot, but that gets in the way of keeping Degrader's PAL state in effect, causing a hassle. (it's an NTSC A2000, unfortunately).

    Anyone been down this road? Thoughts?

  9. Another Exxos order received, this time for a #MC68030 upgrade for my #atariST. Additional parts required from Mouser, and some #SMD skills that may be beyond my tools or expertise. Looks like he did all the rear mounted parts in an oven or hot plate, but I’ve got to do the other side. This also adds an IDE interface, which I’m excited about.
