How do I get the motivation to fix this laptop mainboard?
The only thing wrong with it is the charge ports, but the problem is 44 of the 48 pads across the 2 type c ports are missing. (don't ask me how, I don't know either, its used since it was the only replacement board I could afford)
I've been putting it off for a few months now, I know what must be done, I just am too intimidated.
Any tips for reframing this problem so i stop putting it off would be appreciated

I repurposed a ChromeBox CN60 for #ubuntuserver and Pihole. Flashing the box with Coreboot was an experience.

Recently, I've been thinking quite a bit about Linux (and possibly NetBSD) on Chromebook and Chromebox hardware.
I've used a Chromebook with Linux as my daily driver laptop for quite a while a couple years ago. Switched back to a ThinkPad for a bit more CPU power and memory.
I see a lot of value in these Chromebooks that have been liberated with CoreBoot. I posted about it quite a bit a few years ago. May have to get back into it.
Things look like they have changed a bit. Before, a lot of the newer Chromebooks could not be liberated. Now, it looks like pretty much every Chrome device with an Intel processor can be. That's a big improvement.

@torvalds the point is bass ackwards anyways. What we need is more #OpenFirmware as well as #OpenHardware.
It's about market precedent at the end of the day. It should be a consumer right to also receive the code for all the firmware used in the hardware purchased.
That's a separate problem entirely. It's a whole jungle of different licensing and distribution issues all together that shouldn't concern Linux.
This is why #CoreBoot is such a fantastic project and needs to be supported as well.

Oh no, #Intel platform detection isn't that easy.
There is no simple field like platform ID or something in #IFD to determine it.
Also, IFD fields have changed semantics a bit over time.So #coreboot's ifdtool has some "guessing" and a list of known platforms to apply quirks, with the platform to be passed via CLI, not detected.
I will try my best to use information from the ME #firmware to get a rough idea, e.g. presence of CPDs.
I think that's the way to go.*sigh*

#Chipflasher : Version v2.1.3 released!
When it comes to #flash a #coreboot or #libreboot #laptop, we are now using #Zerocat’s free-design chip flasher as part of a quite clean & free #toolchain.

Recently I have been trying to blog more, mostly going through the dozens of post ideas & incomplete drafts and actually finishing them.
One of the newly published posts is about me and @kittynunu turning a #Chromebook into a #Chrultrabook by flashing #Coreboot onto it.

https://canoeboot.org/news/gnu.html
The Canoeboot project provides free (libre) boot firmware based on coreboot, replacing proprietary BIOS/UEFI firmware on specific Intel/AMD x86 and ARM based motherboards, including laptop and desktop computers. It initialises the hardware (e.g. memory controller, CPU, peripherals) and starts a bootloader for your operating system. GNU+Linux and BSD are well-supported. Help is available via #canoeboot on Libera IRC.
Should Canoeboot become GNU Canoeboot?

Geeky friends, I have a #thinkpad related question:
I have a #t400 running #libreboot / #coreboot and #OpenBSD. What's the most modern/fastest wifi card it can handle?

The Open Source Firmware Foundation (https://osfw.foundation) invited to their fall community hackathon in #bochum.
It's #hackathon time: day 2.
Coffee machine is at the ready. Cold caffeinated beverages as well.
A lot of people brought #hardware to hack on. Yesterday people discussed not only technical details, but also strategies and politics to drive Open Source #Firmware forward on various popular architectures like x86, RISC-V and ARM for hosts and BMC. -

We thought we’d show it off this Oryx Pro by taking a picture of it by a pile of chopped wood. Random? Maybe, but it makes sense to us.

My project #Optiplex 9010 is coming together. Already replaced the #firmware with the #dasharo #coreboot implementation by #3mdeb. My #xeon e3-1230v2 showed up this morning and is installed and running, and I scrounged another 8GB of RAM to tide me over until I can order a full set of 32GB. I've got a full height #quadro k2000 sticking out of the case until my GPU arrives. In the meantime, it's time for a little benchmark and burn in.

System76 ha risolto i problemi con il pacchetto system76-acpi-dkms e si può aggiornare il sistema in sicurezza. Inoltre molto del codice di Coreboot custom di System76 è stato finalmente pushato mainline per diversi dispositivi!
Pushare forte, sempre!
